Many residents in Lagos still took part in the monthly sanitation exercise on Saturday in spite of the Eid-el-kabir festivities.
The government introduced the exercise to enable residents stay at home and clean their environment on the last Saturday of every month. During the exercise, movement of people and vehicles is restricted from 7am to 10am.
Many Muslim families suspended the slaughtering of rams and other activities to clean up their surroundings.
Kudirat Abdullahi, a resident on Jebba Street in Ebute Metta, said that the sanitation exercise was essential and should be supported by all citizens.
"The sanitation has forced us to clean our environment today after yesterday's celebrations. People came out to observe the exercise and the refuse disposal trucks were on hand too," she said.
Azeez Omolabi, a resident of Ibadan Street also in Ebute-Metta, said that he was happy that government did not cancel the day's exercise because of the celebration.
"The Federal Government declared only Thursday and Friday as public holidays; so the state is right in enforcing the sanitation today; we are happy with it," Mr. Omolabi said.
Yemi Okeowo, a creative artist who lives on Apapa Road, advised that the monthly exercise should not be cancelled because of festivities, as the wastes generated during festivities are cleared during the exercise.
