Yar’Adua has heart problem

Print print Email email Share Share

Segun Adeniyi, the special adviser on communications to the Nigerian President, Umaru Yar’Adua, said Thursday that the president has a heart condition and he is recuperating in a Saudi Hospital.

According to Mr. Adeniyi, the president has acute pericardtis – inflammation of the lining of the heart. He said the president is responding well to treatment.

Mr. Adeniyi had on Monday announced that the president was going to Saudi Arabia for a “follow-up medical checks”. But rumours on the death of the president was rife across the nation on Wednesday.

Mr. Yar’Adua is also believed to be suffering from a chronic kidney condition which he has been battling with for over a decade.

The president’s health condition had been shrouded in secrecy until today’s revelation.

Pericarditis is a recognised complication of end stage renal failure, and could ,sometimes, imply a poor long term outcome from kidney disease. The advent of haemodialysis has been of significant benefit to this condition.Segun Adeniyi, has, inadveretently, thus confirmed that the president does suffer from end stage kidney disease.I hope His physicians in Saudi are competent to manage this condition, especially with the likelihood of it being associated with collection of fluid around the heart(pericardial effussion).

Adeniyi, continue the good job. Why was he not promoted to the post of Mr Re-branding or Information Minister? May God give Mr. President Umaru the strength to withstand the pain. I wish you soonest recovery. Nobody is beyond any ailment.

Further treatment of acute pericarditis varies, depending on the cause. For people who have kidney failure, increasing the frequency of dialysis usually results in improvement. People who have cancer may respond to chemotherapy or radiation therapy, but often, the pericardium is surgically removed. If a bacterial infection is the cause, treatment consists of antibiotics and surgical drainage of pus from the pericardium.

Pericarditis is an inflammation of the pericardium. It can cause chest pain which increases with breathing and movement. Fluid build up between the heart and the pericardium..please hope his aides have been keeping cigarettes away from him

I wish the President great health and quick recovery. For all those who mock the President becauseof his health, or who wish him death. Hmmm... There are a few things you don't wish on people even on your enemies, one is ill-health. Imagine the poor man in pains, no one can help you bear the pain no matter who you are. Those who make sly comments, beware ill-health may be coming your way. I never realised that Nigerians with culture and religiousity could utter such hatred against someone like the president of our country. What a shame and what a disgrace you are. You can't be a responsible person nor deserve to be ina responsible position if you have such bad bile.

if yar'adua is sick, that makes him human, all we can do is to pray for him so the good Lord can grant him speedy recovery. he has shown himself to be averagely capable so far in governance; even better than some past presidents. so i implore whoever has nothing to say to shut-up and first try to rule over his four walls before challenging someone ruling over a 100 million people. MAY GOD GRANT YOU SPEEDY RECOVERY, YAR'ADUA...............YOU HAVE THE BREATH OF LIFE AT YOUR DISPOSAL, BECAUSE HIS GRACE HAS MADE IT ABUNDANT FOR YOU BY OUR PRAYERS.

@Eleniyan you be Doctor..abi you are part of the estacode chopping team? I tell you, it is not that our President could not be healed but all those around him who for the third time (see third term again ooo, or how many times has he been to Saudi) have collected estacode, are to blame. It took them this long to come out with what ails our dear Umaru; just because of foreign exchange. How unfair Nigerians can be. I have sent 'hired healers' to the villa and they will arrive to start the healing process just to shame those estacode-chasing evil servants. @Onyeasili You are the ONLY correct, fast, thinking Nigerian. Kudos men you are free to join our Palm Wine Thinkers Club based near Aso Stone in Abuja I recommend the new EFCC ( I mean the Emotional Failure Correction Commission) for all the medical officers in the Presidency.

Nobody wants Yar Adua to die. We just don't want him to be President. I'm really sorry about his health and all, and I really hope he gets taken care of properly and I really hope he recovers fully, but can the man JUST STEP DOWN???? He wasn't even elected into office. PDP RIGGED him in. The fact that he's even President right now is in clear violation of the Constitution. On top of that he hasn't done anything useful as President. I sincerely hope he makes a full recovery but Nigerians don't have time for this nonsense. We want our country to run properly and we want it to run NOW.

Posted by Kingsley in London on Nov 26 2009

Why does this man not just step aside from the pressidency so that he can concentrate on getting better, and Nigeria can finally get a healthy person to manage her affairs. I have all the synpathy in the world for the man, but we also have a nation of 150 million people to administer. It is only the PDP that can benefit from this unfortunate situation because while the man is unfit to rule, the miscreants are busy getting rich by underhand means, all in Emperor Yar's name.

My fellow country men and women...Yardie boy our dear Presido is suffering from a generalised inflamation of the blood vessels. EVERY and ANY organ in Yardie boy's body could be involved. His kidneys have failed and he must have undergone at least two transplants by now, without that he would be dead. He undergoes dialysis regulary at weekly intervals. Look at the picture of the back of his hands, you would see the trauma caused by the frequent puncture of the houseman's vein. The problem with his condition is that he has to be maintained on antiinflammatory drugs (steroids) to control the inflammation. The side effects are frightening. Should he resign? NO, but he has to delegate lots of his functions to his deputy. The problem is that the Katsina Mafia around him do not allow this, thereby putting unecessary stress on our dear Presido. I pray Yardie recovers from this present episode, but he has to change the management of his life and what he consumes, without that he is in trouble....

Posted by Labalaba on Nov 26 2009

Question: can anyone afflicted with this kind of ailment embark on a rigorous task as the President of Nigeria? What took them so long to disclose the President's ailment to Nigerians and to the world at large? Has the President contravened the Constitution by the nature of his ailment? How much is the President's medical bill per quarter? Aondoakaa should shut his dirty mouth and stop misleading Nigerians about the President's health. By the way where is Madam Dora Akunyili in the scheme of things?

Posted by TATA on Nov 26 2009

Our dear Presido has inflammation of his blood vessels lining. That means, EVERY and ANY organ in his body may be affected. The situation is worsened by the fact that Yardie has to be kept on anti inflammatory steroids, which has serious side effects. He has undergone at least two kidney transplants, but the transplanted organs suffer from the same fate. He has to undergo dialysis weekly, that can be seen from the damage on the back of his hands were his houseman's vein has been repeatedly punctured. Should he resign? ABSOLUTELY NOT!! Yardie has to change his management and life styles. Control the Katsina Mafia around him to enable him delegate more to his deputy. Without that, he is trouble...

Transplant? How do you he has not had one already? It is very significant that for the first time, a specific disease has been named. Those who know about these things can join the dots and discern what is TRULY going on. The bottom line: The Ship of State has a very sick Captain...and the seas are very rough indeed. I pray sincerely that we are not aboard The Titanic right now and that our country will weather this storm too. As for our Captain, no person that desires good for his neighbour can really wish him ill, particularly now. All that we can do is pray that Thy Will be done, O Lord!

It is about NATIONAL DIGNITY and SELF RESPECT. Now that the whole world knows that Nigeria's president does not trust his own country to perform simple diagnostic procedures and take care of his health needs, where do we go from here? Umaru is just like any other man, and I wish him the best of Godspeed, but this practice of shunning his own country when it comes to health care is a SLAP in the FACE of his country. What are the lessons learnt from this, and how does Nigeria plan to capitalise on this for IMPROVEMENT? An UNHEALTHY NATION is a DIEING Nation.

When objective posts are sent people call it wicked. Nigerians are abunch of emotional victims. While nobody wish people ill health, it is only wise for him to resign when his health can no longer allow him to lead the nation properly. Not resigning leaves the country unmanned by a sound healthy leadership. I think depriving Nigeria of an appropriate leadership is more WICKED.

He should do the right thing by the state by resigning, that is putting the affairs of the state first, it already hard for in 9ja talk of a 9ja and a sick president. The state should be supreme and given priority. Let’s stop being sentimental about issues, he is not fit to rule us. None of his 7 point agenda has worked and this is the end of the second year.

Posted by Aremu Lariyo on Nov 27 2009

It is nice that at last Nigerians are having an inkling into the ailment that has sapped the energy of their president. Adeniyi should have given us the clue before now. Afterall since we know that all our hospitals laid prostrate and our doctors poorly remunirated and motivated, the 'Bokas' in the North or the Southern 'Babalawos' may have been able to help out. Afterall if you don't cover your ailment you may well be on the way to receiving solution, often such solutions come from an unanticipated source like the traditional healers whom have become a source of succour to millions of Nigerians as they can not be helped by the poorly equipped hospitals under Yar'Adua's control. Anyhow I wish you quick recovery. In the meantime Nigeria needs to move ahead with a leader whose ill-health won't be a constant source of distraction to good governance. Yar'Adua needs to resign.

Posted by Lariyo Aremu on Nov 27 2009

While wishing President Yar'Adua quick recovery. Methink he should have given us an inkling into the nature of his ailment earlier than this. Secrecy in the state of health of the president of a nation will only breed rumour mongering. Yar'Adua needs to know that he is not a private person. Anything that affects him should be a matter for national discourse. However I think the lesson here is that whoever is in power should endeavour to put things right. Yar'adua's hospitals in Nigeria are poorly equipped, the doctors poorly remmunirated. No wonder the constant flight to Saudi Arabia for help. Forgeting that the latter is a country that has a large proportion of her doctors being Nigerians who have fled the long years of misrule of our successive governments. I strongly believe it is unpatriotic for members of any government in power to seek health outside the shores of their nation. Let us fix our hospitals, our schools and other social infrastructure. However I wish Yar'adua a very speedy recovery.

We need to pray for fast recovery of our president. He is our leader, i wonder why some people are praying for him to die. Please let us all pray for his recovery and peace in the nation. Pastor Temitope Balogun Joshua, of the Synagogue, Church of All Nations, during last Sunday service called on members to pray for Yar Adua vigorously. He charged them to pray for the body and soul of the president this Thursday and fast for him on Friday. All Nigerians please we have to join in the prayer and fasting to the recovery of our President.
