Yar'Adua is suffering from heart condition

Print print Email email Share Share

After days of silence over President Umaru Yar'Adua's state of health, the Presidency, yesterday, said Mr. Yar'Adua, who was admitted into the King Faisal Specialist Hospital and Research Centre in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, on Monday, has been diagnosed of acute pericarditis (an inflammatory condition of the coverings of the heart).

Salihu Banye, the president's chief physician, who is currently with him in Saudi Arabia, said this in a statement following the rumours making the rounds in the country that the president was dead.

He added that more checks at the same hospital, where he had his last medical check-up in August, confirmed the initial diagnosis of the same condition.

In explaining the circumstances which led to the president's trip to Saudi Arabia, Mr. Banye said: "At about 3pm on Friday, November 20th, after he returned from the Abuja Central Mosque where he performed the Juma'at prayers, President Umaru Musa Yar'Adua complained of left sided severe chest pain. Preliminary medical examinations suggested acute pericarditis, (an inflammatory condition of the coverings of the heart).

"It was then decided that he should undertake confirmatory checks at the King Faisal Specialist Hospital and Research Centre in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia where he had his last medical check-up in August.

"The medical review and tests undertaken at the hospital have confirmed the initial diagnosis that the President is indeed suffering from acute pericarditis." According to him, the president is responding well to the treatment he is currently receiving.

"He is now receiving treatment for the ailment and is responding remarkably well," Mr. Banye said.

Understanding our president's illness Acute pericarditis is a disease which causes the inflammation of the membrane (the pericardium) surrounding the heart. This condition begins suddenly and is painful. In most cases, it results from an infection or conditions that irritate the pericardium.

The irritation of the pericardium can be caused by disease, drugs, invasive cardiothoracic procedures and chest trauma.

Its most common symptom is a sharp stabbing chest pain on the left side of the chest which grows worse when the person is lying down, coughing or taking deep breaths.

It is most common in men and research has shown that one out of five persons who suffer from this ailment has a recurrence within months of the original episode.

Governance goes on Olusegun Adeniyi, the President's spokesperson, said "The vice president is now acting on behalf of the president. He takes charge in the absence of the president." In this light, he will today receive Muslims at the Presidential Villa as part of activities marking the Id-el-Kabir.

While fielding questions from journalists, the spokesperson said Mr. Yar'Adua felt really bad that people rumoured him dead.

"He is a human being, naturally he will feel bad. This is not the first time, the President was aware of the rumour. He felt bad about it as any normal human being would," Mr. Adeniyi said.

No plans for the Hajj Mr. Adeniyi also refuted claims that the president was going to perform the Hajj.

Reuters, yesterday, quoted a spokesperson for the hospital where Mr. Yar'Adua is receiving treatment as saying, "The Nigerian president is in good condition. He underwent routine internal medical checks and had lunch today at the hospital.

"He may well leave tomorrow to perform a pilgrimage to Mecca." However, the president's spokesperson said, "It is definitely not true; even before the President travelled, he knew that he was not going to perform the Hajj. Even when I did the first draft for the statement, I stated that the President will do medicals and undergo Hajj, but he said no, I am not going to do Hajj. So there is no way he is going to do Hajj," he added.

The statement which Mr. Adeniyi had issued upon the president's departure was silent on the ailment he suffers.

Yesterday's disclosure by the president's physician was the first time an official statement was made on his ailment since rumours about his poor health became popular.

Saudi visa delayed president's trip On the day of his departure, the president was said to have left late in the night instead of at the planned time. The delay was attributed to the holiday in Saudi Arabia.

"Actually what happened was that the President was supposed to leave earlier in the day but because of the holidays in Saudi Arabia they couldn't procure his visa in time," Mr. Adeniyi said.

Once in Saudi Arabia, our president sought care at the 894-bed hospital which commenced the provision of medical services to Jeddah city and to the Western Region of the Kingdom in March 2000.

It is fully equipped with the most modern medical equipment and technology available.

It observes a full compliance with royal directives which is consistent with its healthcare leadership role in the community, and regards smoking as harmful to health. Smoking is prohibited throughout the hospital buildings and in all hospital vehicles and buses.

There are also reports that Isa Yuguda, the governor of Bauchi State who is also an in-law to the president, and his wife, Nefisah, have travelled to Saudi Arabia to join the president's wife and other members of the family.

who really cares again? they can keep the story to themselves. We, the people have learnt to move on and the thieving elite keep deceiving themselves. We have being lied to too often and too not even care for the truth again. You, personal physician and Segun Adeniyi can jump into the lagoon for all i care.

all i know is that this is one of the most decent president we ve ever had. a few things - he reverted VAT to 5% from 10% since his first day and has kept it there. he reveted fuel price to 65 naira since then and kept it there. his predecessor obj increased fuel pricer 11 times, from 11naira to 65 naira in 8 years, with impunity and disrespect for nigerians. we are truly and unlucky and undiscerning nation. yaradua should watch that he is not being poisoned by people who dont want a good person to get nigeria out of the woods. they ve done it before in too many countries in africa. records are there, but of course we black people dont read. they say to hide something from a black man, put it in a book. he'll never see it. this man fashioned out a bloodless solution to the niger delta crisis, using his patience as a tool. he didnt create another odi and zaki biam. he frugally cut down the expense for the last U17 world cup from 38billion proposed by amos adamu and co, to 13billion overnight. we nigerians are cynics, most are turning into sado-masochists (sadists and desirous of inflicting self-pain). most of us believe we are the only ones who can solve the country's problem thru our 'intelligence', but then you give us a local govt, or even the finances of our village meeting, and we 'whack' the money. i beg leave matter

With due respect to the personal physician, he is NOT telling the complete story. ANY and EVERY of Yardua’s organ is under attack from the condition he suffers from.It is an auto immune disease. Even the new kidneys transplanted suffers from the same fate. The inflammatory condition could attack any part of Yaradua’s body that has a vaso lining. He would need at least three transplants a year and very frequent dialysis. He has been having the dialysis because when you see the picture of the back of his hands, the houseman's vein has been so frequently punctured that the damage is permanent. Should he resign? NO, he can manage his life with discipline and a strict regime including diets..etc. BUT he has to delegate more functions to his vice, without that he is in trouble.

Mr Olusegun Adeniyi, you said Mr president felt bad because of rumours concerning his death. Did it occur to him (or you as his spokesperson) that the reason why people are feeding on scarps is because you have starved them of information? This is the first time in two years that there has been an official disclosure of what is wrong with the president. As a one-time journalist whose profession thrives on the oxygen of information, do you think this is fair? Wouldn't it have been absurd if the rumour mill did not kick into life? What do you expect people to do? You withhold critical information from them and then lament when they fall back on their imagination. By the way, Mr Adeniyi, why have you always responded with barely concealed irritation when former colleagues have asked you questions concerning the president or his health? Are you not the same person who, a couple of years ago, railed and ranted about freedom of information? How is it that you now get indigant when people try to tease the same information out of you? Why have you stopped asking the same searching questions about governance in Nigeria now that you are now on the other side? Does it not bother you that the president of a proud country like ours will continue to travel abroad for medical examination? What does that say about the state of our health sector? Mr Olusegun Adeniyi, have you suddenly forgotten what things are like outside the villa? Is this the Verdict we have all been waiting for?

Posted by Spot On on Nov 27 2009

Thank you very much, Open Wound. I couldn't have put it better myself. I read Olusegun Adeniyi's column with nationalistic zeal as a student and didn't think there could be a greater patriot. Now, see what he has turned into. More than anyone else in this administration and unknown to so many people, he is the most insincere.

ONLY IF THE PRESIDENT HAD DEEMED IT WISE TO PROVIDE IN NIGERIA, Hospitals and Health Care like the one he is getting overseas, he would not have to leave Nigeria for health care overseas. Nigerian RULERS prefer Hospitals in other countries to the ones in their own country. OBASANJO Stella died in Spain from Nip-tuck post op complications too. What are Nigerian leaders telling the rest of the world? Are we so INFERIOR that we CANNOT provide our own ADEQUATE NEEDS? Why do we profess our inferiority by constantly ENDORSING the superiority of anything FOREIGN? What is WRONG with psyche of the Black Man?

Whenever i see or hear Segun Adeniyi and Dora talking, i am reminded of the reasons why i lost hope in this contraption called a nation few years back. Segun Adeniyi is the sole reason why i treat every Nigerian columnist as evil until proven otherwise. I wonder how such persons sleep at night?

Posted by AGBOWO on Nov 27 2009

I kept on wondering why there shouldn't be a standard hospital in our country atleast to ameliorate these problems associated with logistics of going to hospitals abroad. Had it been that his health condition was so critical that he could not survive it while waiting in airport, different stories would have rent air respecting the doubtful story of his death. But I thank God that the story hasn't changed yet. Secondly, building a reputable hospital in the country will give room for many medical personnels exercising their much acclaimed medical experience acquired from their reputable universities in the country. This will go further to support the fact that medical students are well nurtured, rarely embark on strike in the country and have medical practitioners paid as due.

God has a way of dealing with corrupt people. No Nigerian should be bordered about this fake stories. Even the devil cannot trust these rogues. They have allotted all the resources we have on this land to themselves to the detriment of the masses. Then anything can happen to them anytime; because you cannot cheat God. What if Ya'radua owns the king faisal specialist hospital and research centre in Jedda, Saudi Arabia? Is it not a chicken change of what has been officially or otherwise stolen from us? What about refineries abroad by the same PDP rogues? Do you know how many million Nigerian have died in the hand of PDP nest of killers and those who are dead because diseases and hunger. There is no single hospital, road, school, functional company in Nigeria. These rogues have caused this. So they must pay for it somehow with their lives. Would he resined? NO NO! Where will he get all the money to spend in the name of foreign trips for treatment? He was in Katsina for eight years as governor, go there and see if there is any road in Katsina. It's all foreign trips for drugs and treatments. Who cares to know what is wrong with Ya'radua? They have lied to us, so no one is interested. He should resign and go home to live in Jedda because he is priceless liability to Nigerians and our resources.

While wishing the president quick recovery, it is rather sad that before now the president's state of health has been kept from the Nigerian public. I am stricken with embarrassment and disappointment that our leaders rush to foreign hospitals to seek Medicare. Does it mean that our so called national hospital in Abuja and numerous hospitals and health centers across the country are merely death resorts for the Nigerian masses who can't afford the exorbitant cost associated with going abroad for treatment? Almost fifty years after independence we are still dancing naked in the market square of corruption, incompetence, nepotism and grandstanding. God bless Nigeria.

All these people wishing President Yar Adua quick recovery must go to hell like the President. Have they ask themselves if when sick could afford to go to Germany or Saudi Arabia for treatment. These people are part of the slave mentality & sycophants that do not allow Nigeria to move forward. Yar Adua is an obstacle to Nigeria’s progress or forward movement. Our hospitals are virtually a consulting mortuary & you should ask the Police man who took his daughter to an hospital in Ibadan & end up killing other children because Nigeria hospital killed his daughter. We pray that all our Nigerian leaders who ignore funding the healthcare system & rush overseas for treatment come back dead-President Umaru Musa Yar Adua is no exception. May Almighty God bring him back to Nigeria a dead man.

Dear President, Without minding your numerous sins, which I sincerely believe are mainly caused by bad association with PDP(Evil company corrupts good habits 1Cor 15:33 )I still wish you a quick recovery. I read it in your profile on the BBC website that you are referred to as 'Baba go slow'. Don't mind those who gave you that name, after all they have done it to your predecessors. They called Abacha Baba Gboin (Baba Stay Put) Obasanjo, Baba no regret. Only God knows the name they will give to me when I become President (Insha Allah). As for Adeniyi, make una leave am alone. He is only following precedence. At least, Chukwumerije (propaganda minister) did it, Fani-Kayode did his own. That he somersaulted from being a fine columnist to a manufacturer of 'thruth' is only due to the Nigerian factor.

@POOR NIGERIAN. Thanks for the good quote. The road to hell is paved with good intentions, but i didnt mention the guy's intentions, i mentioned his deeds. niger delta, revertion of VAT and petrol prices, cutting budgets of crooks in sport sector, even the upcoming petroleum bill. when our brother obasanjo was there we couldnt face him. now because this is a 'malo' we think he couldnt do anything good. controvert my claims on what the guy has done. if he dies, i wonder which rogue will replace him. and talking about surrounding himself with thieves, not all of them are. a leader will make an effort to get good people, but he has to choose from among nigerians. a few of his lieutenants are good - ajumogobia, mansur mukhtar, tokunbo kayode, rilwan babalola, remi babalola to name a few. are they not nigerians like you? if they put you there, how will you make a difference? so i leave you with a quote from Mahatma Ghandi - BE THE CHANGE YOU WANT TO SEE IN THE SOCIETY. Criticising online and attempting to bring down th house on everyone will not solve our poverty problem. what will solve our poverty problem is when we look around us and try to do things in our society that addresses the NEED of those around us. that is what the oyibo man did and continues to do. from the discovery of PENICILLIN to the invention of the INTERNET. there is so much need around us but we ignore how that can be addressed and catered for in a way that will make our society better and bring us the personal wealth we desire. we go cap in hand seeking for jobs instead, in banks and oil companies, not minding that those institutions are ripping off our land and people. and then we turn around and blame government. we should push for smaller govt and attempt thru our private efforts to make whoever the president or governor is, IRRELEVANT....

The big question is that >>> Is this regime going to be all about the president's health ? Rather than this government concentrating on bringing the dividends of democracy to the masses all it has been battling with is Umoru's health. I think is will be more honourable for UMORU to step aside for health reason at least. Ejo e bami sofun!

Hallelujah! This may just be an opportunity for the Name of Jesus to be preached to our president. There is power to cause supernatural healing in the Name of Jesus and as Christians we have the authority to use that Name. “If my people who are called by my Name shall humble themselves and pray, then will I hear from Heaven and heal their land”. Nothing is too hard for God to do and this is our chance to save our president. Mr. Vice President Sir, God may have put you there for such a time as this to reveal His Love, Glory and Power. It would not be out of place to call for a day of national prayer for the president’s health. If Mr. President was told his death was rumored, how would he feel to know the country is now praying instead?

Posted by Taiwo Akinlami on Nov 27 2009

May God grant our dear president a speedy recovery. He will nit die but live in Jesus name. It is sad that it has taken 2 years before Aso Rock could give an official position on the state of the health of our number 1 citizen. That the president of the populous black nation on earth would have to be taken abroad for medical treatment is an indictment on our health care system. The other side of the coin is that what is the fate of other citizens, who suffer from the same kind of ailment the president suffers from, who do not have the means to travel abroad. My sincere advice is that since our government is not able to provide effective health care system, all of us should be given the opportunity to travel abroad when they suffer from any ailment that cannot be treated in Nigeria. The opportunity of traveling abroad must not be the exclusive privilege of the president or the highly placed in Nigeria. The point must be made that the president is voted into power to hold the resources in trust for all the other citizens. Therefore the resources of the state must be distributed equitably. If the government will not attend to our health care system because its officials know that they can always travel abroad, then the opportunity should be extended to all of us. In the alternative our health care system in the nation should be improved upon immediately through a credible plan. Shalom!

He is unfit and so should resign that position if he is truly a man of integrity...

@Tata, thankyou for educating us on the true picture of the President's ailment, without people like you we would never know the truth. Keep up the good work. I completely agree with everyone who has commented positively and has the interest of the "Citizens" of our great nation Nigeria at heart. To our leaders, the President's condition should be a wake-up call to them to address the needs of the Citizens. We do not ask the for too much just the provision of THE BASIC AMMENITIES........is that too much to ask for?

The president is very unwell and it is affecting his ability to function and carry out his job properly. He only has a 5mins attention span. Constitutionally, the house of Rep should be able to ask him to step down for both his own and country's sake. He himself wants to step down and he has been adviced several times to do so, but his wife has such stronghold on him that she is the one forcing him to stay. He is in a very sad sad situation. The PDP God father knows that he cannot contest for next election and hence why they are looking to field others. There's even some people gathering together to put Turai forward.

Nigeria's presidency is a serious occupational hazard. Ya'ardua is best advised to resign, as his heart condition is never going to improve but worsen because of the natural pressures of his job. He only needs to look at the rate leaders of countries into which Nigeria is transiting peacefully or forcefully, grow grey and age, to realise he can't cope with the job.

sincerely speaking it is not right for nigerians to wish our president well while he is in a saudi hospital, truth hurts. the hospitals there didn't fall from above but were built and managed by leaders like him, recently he attended the opening ceremony of a mega science university in the same saudi. going to saudi for a cure means he would have died if not going there so let him die just like i and any other nigerian that cannot fly to saudi will die in similar circumstance, tell me why a reasonable nigerian should wish him well. at times i ask myself if these guys lack shame, how do they cope lying in a foreign hospital answering A president, minister, senator, army general of the fifth largest oil well in the world. there is no way i can wish yar'dua well because he is from a very prominent family, he could change things for good in nigeria if he refuse to be selfish and greedy. after the death of stella obasanjo in a spanish hospital, miriam hospitalized in U.S now our president in saudi what is the hope of common nigerians as they call us, anyway i can afford to go ghana if am sick what about you? I WISH HE COMES BACK DEAD IN JESUS NAME I PRAY AAAAMMMMEEEEEENNN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

"Even when I did the first draft for the statement, I stated that the President will do medicals and undergo Hajj, but he said no, I am not going to do Hajj." Does anyone see what the likes of Segun Adeniyi think they are paid to do or is it just my eyes failing me? He was drafting a statement to say what our president was visiting Saudi for. Instead of saying it as it was, he was forcing it down the president's throat to say he was going for the Hajj too. It took Yar'Adua's insistence for him to tell us that the visit was solely for medical reasons. Pwaaaah.

This article brings to mind two core issues, (1) the presidents health, rumours of his demise and implications on governance; and (2) medical facilities in Nigeria; however, comments posted add a further issue (3) mis-education, un-insightfulness and irresponsibility of a good deal of Nigerians, especially those who like to class themselves as 'diaspora' Nigerians. First issue: I am compelled to agree with #Open Wound#, on the 'lack of' communication, as the reasoning behind rumours of Yar'aduas’ demise; which the presidential spokesman and his boss consider being untrue and are now expressing regret at such stories making rounds. This was inevitable with little information being made available. Well the honest truth is people are driven by information, what they hear, see or experience. Failure to be furnished with such, they will look for a laudable explanation for non communication; in this case, of the presidents’ lack of or limited representation an international or local scene. However, one would expect his VP to be a lot more visible, this would be in a bid to forestall rumours of power wrangling. But where the number 1 man wishes to be at all events himself, it really sets the tone for the question, “what is the use of his VP if it is only when Yar'adua is physically absent that his VP becomes visible?” I believe, we as a nation need to look beyond our complaint of which past president has created an antecedent for Yar'adua to follow but rather ask, what is being done now, considering his (Yar'adua) ill health, to ensure continuity of governance? This talk of PDP formula of rulership, is it really in favour of ‘NIGERIA’, or just some guise to mask power tussle hungry individuals, masquerading as defenders of the oppressed? I feel the ill health of the president and its impact on the polity of Nigeria and perception provided by his story spinners, is doing more harm than good. The cracks in this government are more evident than ever, especially in the higher echelons of government. Second issue: It is really disheartening, to realise government officials claim millions are spent on health care in Nigeria, but are unwilling to put themselves at the mercies of these ‘supposedly modern facilities’ which are built and equipped. It really questions the moral ground on which a lot of these individuals stand on. If a nations president cannot be treated within his own country and has to resort to the health facilities of other nations, paraphrasing and combining both what #Sky# and #Walker, J# say, ‘it is a very sad revelation of the actual state of health care within a country, in this case, Nigeria and an indication of the lies that are constantly fed to the people on the state of its health facilities as being modern’. Faith in the health care possible from a country should be measurable by the willingness of its leadership to patronise its health professionals and facilities available. Nigeria in this case, from Yar’aduas’ action, scores less than average. It is impossible to score Nigeria zero as some of its health professionals are recognised internationally; so this begs the question, “what is going on here”? However, I’m sorry this is not for me to answer, but I do ask the question the same question of those in power. Third issue: Now, I don’t know how to put this mildly…will all these people calling themselves or describing themselves or even referring to themselves as ‘Nigerians in the diaspora’, who have nothing good to say about Nigeria please “SHUT UP!”. So many of you are quick to criticise the country and call names at the people there but are unwilling to go in there to make things better; just in case you don’t realise, even if you hold the passport for a different country, UK, USA, ITALY, GERMANY...wherever, you are ‘A 2ND CLASS CITIZEN’. So don’t sit out there on your high horses and call Nigeria names or bad mouth the country or its people. The countries you live in went through their own trying times, and still are learning. You compare a country that has gone through a lot of challenges, yet has been virile enough to stick together. You forget it’s the description provided to people they will use in looking at your country. If you criticise, be prepared to offer a solution to the problem you identify! And not run your mouths... bad mouthing what efforts people who dared to brave it in Nigeria are doing.

Thank God we now know our President's ailment. Since it has been said that a patient of acute pericarditis suffers chet pain when he is lying down, coughing or taking a deep breath, how can Yar'adua survive the rigour of governance. Is it not high time that we gave consideration Section 144 of 1999 constitution about a president state of health and removal from office. Hmmnn, don't tell me. I know he is an until-death-do-us-apart president...

Let the president be healed in jesus name.may i remind my fellow contributors that the bible says that we should pray those in authority and urge you guys to do same to Umoru Musa Yaradua.

Posted by TOPE FASUA on Nov 27 2009

I forgot to add HURRICANE SANUSI, the banking cleanup, to Yaradua's achievements. And talking about presidential health, it would seemm the sicker the better. Winston Churchill suffered from a mental case - DEPRESSION, which he called a BLACK DOG, almost reminiscent of Spike Lee's depiction of the New York City maniac - Son of Sam. Depression is no joke, and he is said to have attempted suicide. Ronald Reagan suffered from Pnuemonia in 1945, and a series of wait for this, Uninary Tract Infections (that should interest players amongst you guys), had prostate stones removed in 1966, had colon cancer in 1984, didnt hear from one ear, skin cancer in 1987 etc... JF Kennedy was on morphine (pain killer) throughout his short reign, and he was young, he suffered from autoimmune polyendocrine syndrome tye II, had signs of adrenal failure around 1940, measles, whooping cough and chicken pox as a boy, his mother described him as an elfin, a veryvery sick little boy, and of course chronic urethritis, burning sensations when he peed, back pains, Addison disease, gastrointestinal issues due to celiac disease, wore a back brace throughout his presidency, etc, of course FD Roosevelt who saw america into greatness during and after WWII was permanently on a wheelchair. he had an attack of polio in 1921 that paralysed both his legs, systolic hypertension in 1937, diastolic hypertention in 1941, and a metastitic tumor by 1944. Say these presidents achieved a whole lot for their countries in spite of their health. Also, all bloggers here should submit themselves at their nearest hospital for a thorough check (with whatever archaic equipments the hospitals have), so that we can know who and who is too sick to comment here. Also do be ready to quit your jobs (no matter how menial), based on the results. Many of us are even too scared to find out what is wrong with us. We know that the thinking is what accelerates death... Yaradua has lost 30% of his body mass since becoming president. something happened somewhere... did he just know about his condition? or was he poisoned? it happened to mko etc you know... bad guys are out there. FD Roosevelt was reputedly poisoned in iran. If we asked people to resign based on the real state of their health, only 15years old children will be at the helm of affairs at all levels... think about it

@fortunengr. I mentioned a few guys - ajumogobia (really decent chap), rilwan babalola, remi babalola, to name a few. Cant vouch for anyone 100% cos am not in their minds, but some people are trying. And no, i'm not benefiting from this regime. I run a firm and we try our best to get business from anywhere. I have never benefited from being a nigerian, except i make sacrifices which later turn out good for me. thats why i can stand by my comments on this page - i write in my name, but i dont blog often. i have seen the light- criticism and journalism is not about rabid criticisms only. even i find it difficult making everyone i lead to like me (it can never happen that a leader will be 100% loved, or liked), so i just do my best. If you ask me, i think leading this country, or even serving in any capacity, is a thankless job. only fools and horses, will do that. refer to my first mail about how to make money. i'm serious about that advise. look around you fortunengr, whoever you are, and you ll see that there's money to be made everywhere, if one is sincere and ready to sacrifice. our people are needy, meet them at the point of those needs and you ll see money flow. dont wait for lebanese to come and do that... or chinese...

But we were all alive here when Gani Fawehinmi was sick, Nigerians were praying for him and we all hope he wasnt dead. The truth is dat Nigerians are so bitter dat they dnt care 4 any god 4 d evil ppl dat lead us. I feel wat Nigerians are feelin now, bad road poor infrastructures..... and they are still buying aircraft 4 d senate president and co.... my fear is If the president should die the money that will be wasted on his burial while other Nigerians were out there dying of little ailment for lack of medicals and fund to fly abroad, Goodluck might end up being a bad one for us Nigerians.

@ Tope Fasua, I know ur trying to be moderate, reasonable and bla, bla, bla. Do not kid urself, it is not a virtue. The stance you are taking should only come with middle age and 'giving up'when you are no longer capable of anger and indignation. If ur not in ur 50s then there is a problem. I will begin to'controvert' your opinions one after the other. 1. We screamed our lungs out at Obasanjo, so we are not doing so now just because yaradua is 'malo' as u put it.2.There was plenty bloodshed in Niger Delta before this present charade that you choose to call peace, and if u think what we have now is a solution, then u need to think again. The money they are using to settle the militants, was it budgetted for? Who approved it. What happens when the government stops paying up? You do not negotiate with terrorists. That is what the FGN has done. Now money that should be pumped into education et.c is being used to sponsor militants. That's a nice solution.3. did Nigeria seriously need to host that competition. When u host such tournaments u expect to reap your money somehow. Did we make a profit? Did anybody cross the border from Ghana to watch, were the hotels in Abuja and Kano fully booked because of the under 17? He saved money, true, but he should have withdrawn our hosting rights. Concerning VAT et.c, the president has a weak will and eventually organised protest will get whatever it wants from him. If we decide to organise a protest asking him to denounce Turai, u'll be surprised. And the thing about governance and authority is if u cant take the heat, stay out of the kitchen. Obasanjo is the worst president Nigeria has ever had( in my books, he thumps Abacha), you are asking us to be grateful for having a slow growing malignancy instead of a rapidly growing one.

Posted by Olumide on Nov 27 2009

@ Tope Fasua, I continue my 'controverting'. The main issue is not about the president resigning cos of ill health, the issue is about transparencey. Imagine if the president had told us all 2 weeks into his regime- yes regime- that he ahd a chronic medical condition. Nigerians are very understanding. We would all be by his side now, I think. He didnt say and now he travels out of the country because of his health every other month. I have seen all the 'sick' leaders u mentioned. 1, Depresion and Mania are poles apart. And if I recollect well son of sam was probably schizophrenic which is even worse. The thing is all the ailment you have mentioned are largely treatable and most of them will not impair your mental abilities or physical abilities. Presidents are always 'sitting' anyway, so polio isnt a big deal. Poly Endocrine Syndrome is a big deal, I think, but at least it didnt impair him to the extent of going into the Mayo Clinic everyother month. Chronic Renal failure brings fatigue with it. Major issue fatigue, u just want to lay down all day, even during a UN conference or a budget presentation. See where I am going? Yaradua has lost 30% of his weight because he is sick, very sick. No one has poisoned him.

Posted by olumide on Nov 27 2009

@ Tope Fasua, I still have issues with u o. Congratulations, u are entrepreneural. I have a cousin and a younger sibling who are also so disposed, and my cousin was arrogant enough to tell me formal education is not important, he went on to tell me about as u would have gueseed, Bill Gates. What you all fail to get his that we are all not wired that way. Some have to be employed while some will employ labour, others will run services that will oil the machine of society eg scientists. It is in our biology. I am not a politician or celebrity so I do not have to be politically correct, so here goes, we are not all equal. Having said this however, the onus therefore lies on people like you and others that fall under the category 'elite' to help out the 'masses'. You will do it by employing labour and creating opportunities, others will do it by critiquing the government eg journalists, internet critics and people in the diaspora (many of whom are actually not better off than those in Nigeria any way, but who have the benefit of a lopsided exchange rate which the Government is perenially unable to resolve). So everybody is actually doing something. Now, I am done. Between, this debate has been lively o. Even TATA who only drops one liners went for a whole paragraph. I can go back to my bizniz now.

and thanks olumide for supporting most of my claims. the man almost withdrew the hosting rights. never been done before. amos adamu and co thought they could bamboozle the guy with fifa sanctions. do you know we built the abuja stadium with 64billion in 2002/3? how much did we spend on coja? much more than this one. about budgeting for niger delta... haba bros... when armed robber attacks you at home (God forbid), do you tell them you didnt budget for their visit? i think i can really help you... mail me at topsyfash@yahoo.com... i think he reverted the VAT simply because he's a gentleman at heart, who believes he shouldnt increase the people's suffering. we should have paid thru our noses at 10% for three years by now... dont be an ingrate... if they shout aluta now, lets go and burn tyres in the streets, you Olumide, will only be blowing grammatical analogy from your sitting room, or from New York or London, wherever you are... from you blog, it is obvious that we have an ok president. not the best, but trying... @ olumide, you are on the spot here..Let me start from the last point -the under 17 fraud and wastage that TOPE FASUA is praising the President for. The NTA OB Van upgrade scam is being swept under the carpet and no is asking madam re-branding any question. The contract was hyper inflated in first place, the u-17 is over and yet the equipment is yet to arrive. It has been well documented in several news medium, that S/Africa that is hosting he FIFA world cup is buying set of new equipment for a far more cheaper price and recently madam hypocrite re-brand in an interview with vanguard claim it is not her responsibility to know what’s going in NTA directly, that she is expecting reports on the U-17 games and that after all even though the equipment is yet to arrive, NTA needs an upgrade. What a charade and insult on our collective mentality. Mr.Tope Fasua, those guys you mentioned can you kindly state their positive contribution to governance in their respective capacity that have benefited the ordinary man on the street. You talk about making money; you have to be sincere how many Nigerians have access to funds to start money making business. You may be lucky either from your parental backgrounds or otherwise to start something up and running, but I tell millions of Nigerians have got bright skills and ideas to the same but without the means. Expect you want to be dishonest no ordinary Nigerian can get a bank loan of 20,000.00 naira to start a small business. Yes, given our population, there is money in commodity and retail business in Nigeria, but you and I know the high cost of doing business and corrupt system herein, you really need a good capital base to start up. To be honest with you, we need a JJ Rawlings style to clean the mess and start afresh bcos there is no other way out. Sample options on this forums and other blogs on the www, it will give the true picture of things- that everybody is fed up expect few benefiting in one way or other from the corrupt system. Isn’t a shame that we dont even have a single teaching hospital that take care of the dieing Yaraslow and yet in teh next year budget he wants more jets. Is that not madness and lack of focus. The British PM flys BA anywhere he goes. Tope Fasua am sure you well traveled round the world, what stops us from having the same infrastructure in transport, health, roads etc as obtained in places you might have visited. Lets stop sycophancy and call a spade a spade. Let Yaradua resign, go home and take care of himself first, then we will tackle the next crook that will come on board, gradually we will get there since we as a people are not ready for a mass revolt.

IS FORTUNENGR AN AGENT OF THE GOVERNMENT?...these idiots think through their asses. the presido is sick and needs rest, bombarding a hospital call center would totally derail the hospital affairs, and is downright careless and stupid. the presido would NOT pick up the call, continue to wish him well in any internet column if you want to. We have been informed officially today that our President Umar Musa Yardua is sick. Seriously sick as we have known (but which the presidency had denied) for a very long time. We wish the president a speedy recovery and our prayers are with him. Nevertheless we are concerned about rumours going around that as a contingency plan should our beloved president fail to make it (God forbid) that there are plans to force the incumbent Vice president Goodluck Jonathan to resign his office so as to allow a northerner occupy the exalted office of the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. Should this be the case we are of the firmest belief that this should be the time that nigerians need to stand up and scream from the roof tops and inform whoever is musing this plan that the people of the Niger Delta and all other so called Minority groups are in fact Nigerians. We will not stand up and watch any part of the country treated as second class citizens as the victim might be any of us tomorrow . We should not undermine the unity of Nigeria for any selfish agenda disguised in the garb of ethnic agenda or ethnic protectionism. We stand firm in our belief and are prepared to fight to ensure that we see equality Not just preached but practised at every level in Nigeria. Please forward this to all Nigerians and our leaders as a word of advice and a warning if u have the interest of Nigeria at heart .

I write asking the Medical council of Nigeria to find out and punished whoever is the Physician that sign Yar'adua fit to run for presidency, as we are all aware now and even before that our President is seriously sick and need dialysis now and then to stay alive. and the doctor really knows his terminal condition, this is what will surely happen with a person suffering from Epilepsy allowed to drive or operate a machine- anything can happen. so the Doctor that certify him fit should be held accountable for this.

@Tope Hey don't generalize or stereotype Nigerian, that's what the rest of the world does. No one questions Yardua's sincerity or integrity, but in any other nation in the world, he would have been asked to step down. A country like Nigeria with a population of over 150 million needs a strong and healthy leader. It is unheard of that the president of a great nation like Nigeria will miss various important function in the world, including the recent UN meeting, this is a disservice not only to Nigeria the country but to all Nigerians all over the world. We are not well represented in the world, and this should not be happening at this time when we have a black man as the leader of the free world. His expertise and experience can be better served in a different capacity, where he does not have to deal with the rigors of being a president, which as we all know is insane. In the us were I've lived for decades, the president ages twice as fast.

Nigerians don't know the simple B from the bulls foot, see, over the years we have been clamouring to God to save us and he is about saving us and some irresponsible sycophants are trying to sabotage it by wishing yar'dua ( an imposed president )well. God have decided to intervene just like he did during Abacha, if not the death of Abacha who knows the hell with Nigeria now? Yar'dua will definitely not take the mantle of Aso rock again and against the will of the north Mr Goodluck must be lucky to assume office immediately. Nobody can change the constitution of Nigeria over night, we will all rise up against anybody or group of individuals who think they are born to rule others. Nigeria is getting ripe for a revolution. Has anybody ever heard of an American president having to travel to Saudi Arabia for Routine treatment? We applaud greed. No Health care, no roads, no light, no fuel regardless of the fact that we have crude oil. Yar adua should resign, go treat himself and let Nigeria be run by a healthy person. Needless to say that it'll not be possible considering the corruption and greed is particular to Nigerian politics. Nigeria is indeed getting ripe for a Revolution............

Dear Elizabeth, I know you may not be the one who suggested this STRONG headline, but you are the only one I can call on to. Read it again? Yar'Adua is suffering from heart condition Our dear President is NOT suffering from any heart anything. Read other headlines from other sources and compare them to yours. This is a man who walked into the plane by himself and I am told he plays squash in his dream. Haba!! how can a president SUFFER...then what word will you use for millions of Nigerians who are really suffering. I am very upset with you and your editors. If I were there I would have written Yar'Adua is nursing a heart condition and he will soon be fine. How many 'evil servants' went on that trip with him? I still want to know how much all these is costing poor tax payers? Will anyone tell? Or are we to watch the news till we get the punch?

Posted by Just Like dat on Nov 28 2009

President Yar' Adua, wish you speedy recovery. But I call to question the sincerity of Nigerian leader to truly people focussed governance. NIGERIAN, do we not thing it is time the house begins to a bill banning leaders of this country from taking medical attention outside nigeria. Not until it is outlawed, we are still kidding, we have started on the road to recovery, not until government enterprises are banned from using generators, power in d country will not move forward. How do they do in other nations, we have abundant examples of 'step downs'. So, is it new?, at least in the interest of national stability 'tis just like that.

@scubby...visa for the hanger ons that travelled with the presido, not the presido himself...certain societies insist on processes no matter how baffling it would appear to us...you can fly into nigeria without any document and sort the boys out at the desk...other countries frown at that...its in our nature, we do not have enemies from without but within, so we don't insist on certain procedures...

Thank you people for the first time in ages we have a president whose good intention is not in doubt, and the will to put it into execution is not in doubt, scholars who will study his presidency later will agree with me in no small measure. one thing is clear however, that whatever ails Mallam Musa Yara'dua now will not define his presidency but rather his will to deliver on his promise. He has been responsive to the problems and cries of the greater Nigerian people even against his policy advisers (deregulation fever can attest). Doctors Tata and IJAWGIRL leave the man alone we all ail of one thing or the other for i know that His Brain is not ailing and this uy can rule and have shown us he can. he will be in office for his full term unless he chose to resign

Small wonder Mr President wanted to resign some time ago but sycophants wouldn't allow him to, but rather he was asked to carry on to the detriment of the entire citizenry. How can over 140 million people be ruled by a man whose health condition worsens by the minute? My sincere advice for Mr President is for him to resign if truly he has the welfare of Nigerians at heart, after all presidency is not his heritage.

Your excellency, a word of advice, must you continue? No. Give your soul the rest and peace it deserves, not what the northern cabal wants.Do not listen to them on deregulation, they only want to mess with your governement, you dont have the structures and economic fulcrum in place. The poverty is too much and the refineries comatose.Remember your excellecy, a country is as healthy as its president, if you really love nigeria, then look for ways to make her more healthy in that regard.God be with you.

The state of the Presidents health has been affecting the the health of the country, yet the Presidents Doctor still claims that there is no cause for alarm. This to my mind is all for the race of 2011 election and if those close to the president love him, they should advise the president not to run and if possible; resign for Nigeria to move forward.

I dont realy understand why some people that dont have any logical or intellectual discussion to offer would continue to concoct and paste thier confusion on supposed to be intellectual forum like this one. In my opinion all comments to be pasted should be screened to ensure its intelectual content. Against this back ground,a standard criteria should be set up against which all comments would be screened. This would go along way in preventing the catastrophic views of those sadists who would always want to corrupt the thinking of right and well meaning nigerians, without doing this, the forum would exhibit the nature of an amuesement park. So please if the president is ill, allow him recuperate fast and then advised him the way you like instead of celebrating his funeral while he is stil alive and getting better. To round it up, consider the case of a less healthy governor and that of his healthy deputy that happened in nigeria, was that not enough as a case study, these negative perceptions realy stinks.

Posted by Sowunmi on Dec 01 2009

Can't really blame people for their comments. Thats the result of a bad polity. I really appreciate the views of Olumide and Tope Fasua, especially what Tope opunned about grass root governance. We really need to look inwards and do something for ourselves and in a way make these cabals irrelevant in government. For me the President's ill health is simply an excuse for inaction. He simply does not have the polical will and/or ideology to rule this country.

Posted by Ibrahim Dikko, Scotland. on Dec 01 2009

Mr President, I know that you may not be able to read my comments because of your ill health. I want to assure you that as many as are praying for your quick death, some of us, very few and limited in number are PRAYING TO GOD ALMIGTHY TO GRANT U QUICK RECOVERY SO THAT YOU CAN COMPLETE THE WORK THAT GOD HAS PUT IN YOUR HANDS TO DO FOR OUR DEAR COUNTRY NIGERIA. Please take your time, the power that you have was not giving to you by anyone but God himself. Your account is to him and not to anyone. I wish you quick recovery and good health.

Posted by Rev Francis-Mary Ogundare on Dec 03 2009

The state of our president's health should not be hidden from us. This will help to place himn the merciful hand of God for quick recovery. President Yar'dua belongs to every Nigerian, not only to Muslim or PDP, hence his state of health should be our corcern. Those who are calling for his resignation may not be afterall his enemies. We have been praying for his quick recovery and I ask every Nigerian to do the same. Although our President he is a Muslim, I place him under the maternal protection of the Blessed Virgin Mary, health of the sick and cover him with the Most precious Blood of Jesus Christ for peace and wholeness of body soul.

Posted by moses odigie England on Dec 06 2009

The president is sick, what about it? he is human , he has no control over his health, it is not his will to be ill, I like the Nigerian president, he has good ideals but sorrounded by lot of evil people, America has been ruled by a criple,i will lose hope in the president if he is brain dead,my worry is that the press need to tell nigerians who elected him what is exaclty is wrong with the president so good nigerians can pray for his quick recovery, when he comes back from Saudi , he need to make one hospital in nigeria a center of excellence so when they deny him visa he can go to that hospital, please not hospital excllence on paper Now i can pray for the president because i know what is wrong with him from what i read today

On behalf of water well drilling/rig fabrication trianees, currently undergoing trianing at NWRI,Mando Kaduna State viewed the call by few selfish nigerians for Mr president's resignation as baseless and uncalled for. This came up after the group met at the institute and organized a prayer session for the ailing president and having viewed his administraion as the best in terms of youth empowerment program.

Posted by Emmanuel O. Obafemi on Jan 31 2010

Nigerians know a BIG problem when they see one. President Yar'adua - in my opinion - is not the problem. The man is ill, and we all fall ill and hope to recover. In his shoes, none of us would want to die - no matter the angle from which you look at it. So, the problem is clear: Nigeria is not ready for change RIGHT NOW, and as it was in the past. If PDP stays, we're in trouble. If another party replaces them, we're not sure if they will fulfil their promise. I guess the best way to live in Nigeria is to do what I do: keep your life going in your integrity, carefully listen to the news that concerns you, and make a difference while you can. I tell you, God will surely welcome you home when you die. God Bless Nigeria. God Help Our Children (Our Future)
