Ribadu’s lawyers react to warrant of arrest

Print print Email email Share Share

Lawyers to Nuhu Ribadu have voiced their disapproval of a decision by the Code of Conduct Tribunal on Friday, requesting the Inspector General of Police to issue a warrant of arrest to compel the former chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to appear before it.

“This situation shows that the tribunal members have failed to appreciate the facts of the case before them,” Shola Egbeyinka, one of Mr. Ribadu’s lawyers told NEXT in a telephone interview on Friday evening.

The chairman of the tribunal is Justice Constance Momoh, while Murtala Sanni Adebayor and P.A.O. Oluyede are members.

In February 2009, the Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Michael Aondoakaa filed case number CCT/ABJ/01/2009, accusing Mr. Ribadu of not declaring his assets to the Code of Conduct Bureau while in office from March, 2003 to December, 2008.

But Mr. Egbeyinka said not only had his client submitted these forms as at when due, but a formal request for the certified copies of the asset declaration forms had been made to the Code of Conduct Bureau twice through its counsel, with no results.

“We wrote two letters on September 23rd which was signed by Mr. Femi Falana and a reminder on the 5th of October requesting for the certified true copies,” he said.

Mr. Egbeyinka said that the prosecution confirmed this at Friday’s hearing before the Code of Conduct Tribunal.

“Prosecution counsel Kyari Ahmed admitted that he received the letters but he was so busy that he could not attend to that.”

He added that the documents played a key role in proving Mr. Ribadu’s case, especially as the matter was assuming new dimensions.

“As it is now, it is an unfortunate situation because you cannot enforce the warrant of arrest outside the country. This will now involve other nations, and extradition processes as well,” Mr. Egbeyinka said.

Wow when they hate you they really hate....They cant get Ibori or halliburton or siemens but they can ask for extradiction of Ribadu and El Rufai as they stole Billions from their states or NNPC or Fed Min of Works?I guess this is what you get for serving your country? Ribadu I cant see a way out without expensive legal fees apart from dumping this useless country of corrupt jokers! We will pray for you!

Posted by TATA on Nov 21 2009

so let them follow the process...what is wrong with that? you the lawyer file for an order of mandamus compelling the bureau to provide copies of the documents in their custody...that is the way the game is played...an extradition process is not a one year affair...ribadu could drag it to the us supreme court...which would take at least 2 - 3 years...

If the foundations be destroyed, what can the righteous do? Ps 11:3 Our foundation as a nation has been eaten up by cancer of corruption.....It's now only a matter of time before the cancer metastasizes and eats up the whole nation.

IBORI IS OPENLY BRIBING A JUDGE TO FREE HIM FROM GLOBALLY ACKNOWLEDGED CRIMINAL OFFENCES ,WHILE THE MAN THAT HAS DONE THE MOST TO FIGHT CORRUPTION IN THE HISTORY OF OUR COUNTRY IS BEING HOUNDED ON MISPLACED CHARGES....WELCOME TO A SICK COUNTRY....THIS IS NIGERIA TODAY

for me, Falana has proven that the Federal govt is both prosecutor & judge. therefore, this is a clear case of witch hunting. Yaradua should be involved in more honourable things rather than all this irresponsible bikering for vendetta

THEY SHOULD ALLOW THIS MAN TO HAVE REST THE MISTAKE HAS BEEN DONE BY ALLOWING HIMSELF TO BE USED BY SOME LEADERS LIKE O .B .J OTHERS.

Can any body tell us what Ribadu achieved when he was EFCC boss? All Ribadu achieved with his master Obasanjo was baseless media hype and a reckless heating up of the polity. Going after Obasanjo's political enemies was not fighting corruption but to uphold it. Who did Ribadu convicted when he wasn't chosing who will be the president of Nigeria? Ribadu is as corrupt as the people he went after. Ribadu must therefore return to Nigeria to answer the courts if he thinks he is innocent. Why is Ribadu running from the law? The chicken has finally come home to roost abi.

@TATA. Sometimes it is the lawyers that worsen the situation. As you have rightly observed Ribadu's lawyers should do the right thing procedurally rather than playing to the gallery. That is more honourable and would add to their client's status if he is not guilty of the charge.

Now,this is typical Yar'Adua/Aondoakaa,the motley bunch. It goes to show how that these administration is bereft of any form of vision and SHAME. An administration that would rather fight its heroes. They would rather be pursuing Ribadu/El-Rufai,than Ibori,Orji Kalu and the thieving Governors in the past administration that helped prop them to their stolen mandate. Those are their heroes. Without a shadow of doubt, quite like El-Rufai said,Yar'Adua probably has nothing to offer and nothing upstairs, and so are those goons he has surrounded himself with, hence he is unable to discern when to let go.Or how else would a man of his standing not be able to identify deceit from his team of selfish crooks,a group that would rather their personal interests than the national. Those same group of people are the ones advising him to seek re-election even in the face of his grave medical predicament. At this rate, only a fool would die for Nigeria. At least, not while these brigands are in power. We Nigerians are aware of those who fought and fight our causes, and no form of harassment and official witch hunts will tar white into black in our minds. As is the adage, even these dark days will pass, and the next will also judge the previous. For the moment, this is our fate, and we will live it out.Power is transient, and so will this government be.

The manner in which inanities play themselves out openly and without shame these days, I am afraid something terrible and final is about to happen to the entity called Nigeria. Yar'adua must be living on the moon not to have sensed that.

I see this as the birthday gift from the like of Ibori and Aondoakaa to Nuhu Ribadu as he celebrates his 49th birthday today. You think it was a coincidence that the same Ribadu was demoted on Ibori's birthday....that was a gift from the government to Ibori. We are all watching. Where is Hitler? Where is Abacha? Where is Mobutu? Power and riches are not forever? I am happy for it that this government is fighting Ribadu. Nigerians know their leaders, heroes and mentors. Happy birthday Nuhu.....I wish you a long life in good health, prosperity and peace. Those that seek your life shall fall for your sake. They will inhabit the prison they have built and be hanged in the gallows they have prepared. Amen.

Like John said . . . when they hate you, they really hate you. Its amazing how Ribadu is now the problem bedeviling this country. Ibori, Onyeuike etc are all corrupt and still going around freely so whats all the fuss for? its baffling how government agencies are after him and el rufai after their service to they country. Abuja has turned into one hip of garbage ever since el rufai left office

This is the greatest evidence yet that this government has no sense of direction and priority. What's more, they have total disregard for our intellect and opinion. Clearly, if they know what they are doing, how to do it and are doing it, Ribadu being abroad would be least of their troubles. The only reason they want Ribadu caged is that the has inside and privileged information about corruption in Nigeria and why Yar'adua and his lameduck government are merely going through the motion of doing something about it. Ribadu is one of the few credible means of letting the whole world know how corruption is wrecking our lives, the future of our country and children in Nigeria. He has no bussiness in Nigeria at the moment; and it makes sense that every right and forward thinking Nigerian should rally round him, if only because of this mission forced upon him.

Yar ardua, you are a sick and dying man, fear Allah. Do the right thing. you refuse to prosecute criminal but you are going after RIBADU for dearing to.

Posted by Sunday on Nov 21 2009

It's quite unfortunate that we are in this country where corruption is the order of the day. However,it is clear that the evil that men do live before them, with them and after them. Let all Nigerian remember there last day. It crucial. Ribadu will keep on moving from one position to another in the presence of the so called enemy. Therefore, any lawyers or judges should learn from the past.

When will the people in charge of affairs of Nigeria stop subjecting the country into ridicule? No matter any legal justification that may be canvassed for the desperation to bring Ribadu to book at all cost, the body language of the Government betrays any sincerity of purpose. Is it too difficult for the people behind this vendetta seeking mission to understand the incalculable harm they are doing to the already battered image of the country? Or, could it be construed that they care less? Lord have mercy

@ Otikpii, do you think we nigerians are as fools as you think in your imagination? you keep changing your name from one online news to another defending Ibori and attacking Ribadu, remember no matter how much you are paid for this nonsense, unreasonable, callous and wicked job, you will exhaust them, even if you invest with it, you will loose all, the scriptures say "whatsoever a man sows he reaps" you Otikpii, Ibori and Aaondokaa will receive the fiery judgement of God right from here on earth your blood money will not be able to save you. How can a convicted fellow( both in Abuja and London) like Ibori be ruling Yardua and trying to be fooling Nigerians. The wrath of God is upon all who put Nigeria in this mess, whether by looting, killing or defrauding. The Bible says " he gathers wealth but does not know who will spend it"

Mr. Nuhu Ribadu has become an albatross on the neck of Mallam Yar'Adua's hopelessly corrupt government and as such this government has vowed to get him. The latest warrant for his arrest is one of the many attempts to net and silence this patriot. Although he is relative safe where he is in the United States, Ribadu should be careful not to let his guards down because Nigerian government is awash with money, as it does not provide any essential services, and could easily buy your closest friend and relatives' loyalty. Nuhu and his lawyers must be light-footed and quick of mind to avoid being entrapped by Yar'Adua's evil and selfish government. While he should engage his mind and soul in relentless study on why some nations progress while others fail. With that knowledge and other administrative skills developed he will be in better position to assume the leadership of this ruderless ship called Nigeria. Your time is coming Mr. Ribadu. Happy Birthday!

Posted by mister on Nov 21 2009

Nuhu is our man, no matter what they do to him.

Posted by folly on Nov 21 2009

let all be objective in our thinking,Otikpii may not be far from the truth, but the hero RIBADU allowed himself to be used by OBJ, thats why we cannot exonorate him totally from all this mess. God will see us through, i think RIBADU has a scour to settle with this people, they know themselves we nigerians know less, lets all keep watching my people

Posted by AsiwajuNiger on Nov 22 2009

Mallam Nuhu Ribadu has done his bit to sanitise the sytem, although without few shortcomings. But it appears that Ibori cronnies (Aondoakka, Yaradua, et al.) are hell bent in jailing the man. By the special grace of God, they will not have their way. For Aondoakka, and all his pay masters, their days are numbered in the office and even in this world!

Former Obj's witch-hunter-in-chief and ex political policeman, come back home and have a taste of your own medicine.

Defender of corrupt governors (Michael Aondoakaa ) can champion the arrest of an innocent man (Ribadu) , thank God the accusation is not stolen funds but undeclared asset. Those that are accused of stealing what has happened to them.
