A tracking system to monitor movement of kidnappers has been established in Abia State. This is one in the series of new measures introduced by the government to fight kidnapping and related crime in the state.
Speaking at the Government House, Umuahia, when he met with the new executives of the Aba Chamber of Commerce, Industry, Mines and Agriculture (ACCIMA), the governor, Theodore Orji said the system will alert the government and its agencies of kidnappers’ whereabouts through their phones.
According to the governor, three masts located at Aba, Umuahia and Ohafia, are to be used in covering the entire state. He also said plans are being made to use helicopters to fight crime in the state.
Mr. Orji said his administration is now in contact with some kidnappers who have agreed to lay down their arms if they are assured of their protection.
While advising residents of the state to pay their taxes, he said the ultimate aim of his government was to increase its internally generated revenue.
Earlier, the new ACCIMA president, Azuka Alagwu, said their visit was to formally introduce the new executive to the governor and to inform him of their planned inauguration and investiture ceremony.
Mr. Alagwu requested the governor to provide four additional high frequency radios to boost security in Aba, as well as to provide the police in Aba with more vehicles and other logistics.
