Striking Ogun State teachers resolved at the weekend to temporarily suspend their strike action for two weeks from Monday to allow negotiations between the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), Ogun state chapter, and the state government continue over the implementation on the 27 percent increase in the Teachers Salary Scale (TSS).
The resolution was reached after the third meeting of both parties at the conference room of the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology, Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta, the state capital.
The meeting had in attendance the chairman of the NUT, Sam Idowu, with other representatives of the union and the state government led by the Head of Service, Dipo Odulate.
A communiqué issued at the end of the meeting declared that it was unanimously agreed that they should return to classrooms, with assurance from the government that no teacher would be penalised for his or her role in the industrial action.
It reads: “It was unanimously agreed that the strike action embarked upon by the teachers in the state, be suspended for a period of two weeks with effect from Monday, November 9, 2009 to allow for the conclusion of the negotiations.”
The agreement stated further that, “arising from the foregoing, the NUT has agreed to suspend the strike action for two weeks and that teachers in both primary and secondary schools throughout the state should return to work immediately.”
