Striking Ogun State teachers resolved at the weekend to temporarily suspend their strike action for two weeks from Monday to allow negotiations between the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), Ogun state chapter, and the state government continue over the implementation on the 27 percent increase in the Teachers Salary Scale (TSS).

The resolution was reached after the third meeting of both parties at the conference room of the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology, Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta, the state capital.

The meeting had in attendance the chairman of the NUT, Sam Idowu, with other representatives of the union and the state government led by the Head of Service, Dipo Odulate.

A communiqué issued at the end of the meeting declared that it was unanimously agreed that they should return to classrooms, with assurance from the government that no teacher would be penalised for his or her role in the industrial action.

It reads: “It was unanimously agreed that the strike action embarked upon by the teachers in the state, be suspended for a period of two weeks with effect from Monday, November 9, 2009 to allow for the conclusion of the negotiations.”

The agreement stated further that, “arising from the foregoing, the NUT has agreed to suspend the strike action for two weeks and that teachers in both primary and secondary schools throughout the state should return to work immediately.”

i hope d two parties will be able to reach a lasting agreement during d 2wks pally. i'v seen children in both pry & secondary school roaming d streets in parts of d state; these kids are vulnerable to bad behaviour if unchecked. the state government should do something ,even if it has to tilt to d teacher's demand.

Finally, the two parties want to shift ground.the strike stayed this long because ogun state government is not a listening government.

The teachers has been cajoled again, I believed this is the third time NUT is suspending strike over this 27.5% Increase. Like Rapheal rightly said, Ogun State Government is not a listening Government. We regretted we voted Gbenga Daniel in for the second term. see what he is doing? Biting the fingers that feeds him. What a shame.
