The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has commenced the construction of a 10km expanded metal operational fence to further secure the airside of the Murtala Mohammed International Airport, Lagos.

The authority, over the weekend disclosed that the project, which is being handled by Avalon International Nigeria Limited, is aimed at securing and differentiating the airside where aircrafts operate, from the existing perimeter concrete fence that helps in demarcating the landmass of the airport.

"The perimeter fence is the airport boundary fence, but this metal fence is to secure the airside so that unauthorized persons cannot penetrate the airside, except passengers who are travelling or authorized personnel," said Akin Olukunle, general manager, public affairs FAAN.

Mr. Olukunle disclosed that the contractor handling the project has been mobilized to site for survey work, stressing that the project will take about 16 weeks to complete.

He disclosed that the metal fencing of the airport closed up all security lapses and loopholes experienced in the past at the international airport.

"The reason for using this new operational fence, which is made of expandable non-corrosive metal that is difficult to break, is to secure the airside against security breach during aircraft landing and take-off," he said. "We don't want a situation where passengers or airport users will complain of insecurity at our airside, so we are doing our best to cover up by constructing this metal fence."

In August, Babatunde Omotoba, Nigeria's minister of aviation declared the commencement of security perimeter fencing of the Port Harcourt International Airport, Rivers State.

"The authority is also enhancing security at the Port Harcourt International Airport, for construction work on the perimeter fence of the airport is ongoing," said Mr. Olukunle.
