Lawmakers ask robbers to declare temporary ceasefire

The Ogun State House of Assembly on Wednesday appealed to armed robbers operating in the state and neighbouring ones to suspend their activities in the light of the junior World Cup going on in the country.

The Assembly reminded the robbers that any of their operations during the period of the tournament will give the country a bad name, as several foreign visitors are in the country now. Ogun is one of the states hosting teams in the competition.

The lawmakers agreed to beg the bandits during deliberations on the floor of the House, at their Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta complex. A member, Edward Ayo Odugbesan had raised an alarm that the Isheri bridge, which links Ogun with Lagos State, has become a den of bandits.

Mr. Odugbesan said there is a need for the men of the underworld to suspend their operations in the interim, because of the on-going mundial. The Ijebu-Ode International Stadium is one of the centres being used for the competition.

"I want to appeal to the men of the underworld to suspend their actions and operations in the interim because of our foreign visitors currently in the state," he said. "Then they can resume thereafter, because there is nowhere in the world where robbers and robberies could be stopped from their work." He then called on his colleagues to support his call on the armed bandits to soft-pedal because the situation is becoming worrisome. "If foreigners witness the robbers' attacks at this point, it would send a bad signal to other nations," he said.

Police wake up

Reacting to Mr. Odugbesan's call, the Speaker, Tunji Egbetokun, called on the police leadership to intensify efforts in ensuring that security is maintained in the state. "I want to use the opportunity to call on the police to intensify efforts in checkmating criminals. They should please not relent in the efforts," he said. In a related development, the Assembly ordered the head of the Local Government Administration of Obafemi-Owode to appear before it next Wednesday for clarification on the budget and expenditure of the council. The local government official was said to have dodged previous invitations over the past three months - a development which the Assembly faulted at its session yesterday. The lawmakers, therefore, directed the Clerk of the House, Demola Badejo, to write the official on the matter and direct him to report before it.

Law makers appealing to robbers?! How low can law making get in Ogun state and Nigeria? I dare any other state Assembly to beat this level of certifiable incompetence. Residents of Oyo state can now heave a sigh of relief as the people in Ogun state have taken the award for mediocrity. Halelujah!

Posted by Oropo on Oct 29 2009

They should provide jobs, food, house and many more for the citizen. No need of appealing to them....please, tell them that they never see anything.

Its amazing the kind of things we hear this days in our country, first its Mr president offering amnesty to terrorist, now its members of the house of assembly making a passionate appeal to robbers to cease fire so as not embarrass this great country of ours. well, could be that these dudes have the interest of the image of Nigeria at heart but they really do have the interest of this nation at heart, they will honourably resign their offices for this high level of mediocrity, gross incompetence and lack of knowledge. Is this the best our lawmakers can do? shame on them

Posted by Eric S Ebalu on Oct 29 2009

It is unconstitutional for our lawmakers to appeal to armed robbers who are tanishing the golden image of nigerians both home and abraod, is the duty of the authority to intensify effort to bring to book all papetractors of these babaric and unlawful acts. The law enforcement agent should be incharge in controlling these misguided, misbigotten and rootless robbers.pure and simple not appealling to THEM !!!

This is the most expensive joke I have heard in years....lawmakers begging armed robbers. Shouldnt they rather ask what they can do to reduce the poverty level in the state and see that these young men are gainfully employed. This is a real shame.....Sorry to Ogun State Lawmakers....very big SORRY.

The lawmakers in Ogun State appealing to robbers in Ogun State to temporary ceasefire to enable the foreigners go then they can continue. Who will they continue with then, the lawmakers or who? What a set of lawmakers!

It is vey pathetic that law makers would call for robbers to cease operations whilst the under 17 world cup is going on in Nigeria so that foreigners don't have a bad impression of Nigeria, how ludicrous. People like the Hon member Edward Ayo Odugbesan , represent the decay that is in our nation and has permeated all sphere of socio-political and economic fabric. What utter rubbish. what about the lives of thousands of Nigerians that are lost every year because of armed robbery and a very ineffective government that cannot provide security for its citizen. To even have the temerity to suggest they can continue after is enough grounds for him to lose his seat. What hope is there for our nation if people like this seat as law makers over us?

I think Oropo has given the lawmakers free consultancy service that will profer solution to the menace of armed robbers all over Nigeria. Government at all levels should wake up and provide social security, housing, jobs for the people and fund the police adequately. Looking at the amount of money that Bode George & co thieves stole and all other thieves like them in local, state and federal government levels, it is appauling. The greatest enemies in our midst are not the armed robbers but the politicians themselves. They are the ones stealing money that is meant for development, security provision, provision of amenities, provision of jobs etc, etc. The amount of money that armed robbers steal is peanut compared with what a single politician steals from our treasury. Political office holders, please talk to yourselves first and do away with your greed of robbery against Nigerians. The solution lies in the hand of political office holders.

THESE LAW MAKERS ARE NOT SERIOUS!Who is giving the country a bad image? This is a case of pot telling the kettle you are black when the pot is more black than the kettle. Let the foreigners see the true situation on ground and assess the dividends of our democracy.

Posted by mustyville on Oct 29 2009

This country, government and her lawmakers are rotten.

Posted by rawdah on Oct 29 2009

This clearly shows the kind of characters we have as lawmakers. Appealing to armed robbers to suspend their activities is so laughable and a disgrace to the nation. of course armed robbers come in different names, sizes and shapes. The most lethal ones are not the ones who rob in the night, but those who do so in the daylight, portraying themselves as representatives of the people. I just hope the armed robbers will target more of such groups than ordinary people on the streets and those who genuinely worked to achieve what they have.

I don't believe this, do the robbers have a liaison officer in the house?

Posted by uwana on Oct 29 2009

I wonder why these so call politician disgrace themselves, it is a disgrace to Nigeria, I wonder if these men went to school at all. we don’t have a system in place, if the government have done what they ought to do, there won’t be a need to negotiate with arm robbers. Wonders they say shall never cease WHEN OUR LEADERS GO ABOUT STEALING AND ARE NOT PROVIDING JOBS FOR THE YOUTH, WHAT DO WE EXPECT?

Posted by The Man on Oct 29 2009

Clowns! This is disgraceful! I am ashamed to be associated with that country. Shame on all of you!!! Dont forget the law makers are the product of the environment so what do you expect. And this could have happened in any part of Nigeria. Nonsense!! Thats whay I will ensure none of my kids ever step foot in that country again!

This is very ridiculous. Lawmakers are begging these men to hold on until after the U-17 tournament, after the games what would happen to the residents? The men of the underworld can then resume their activities even as we enter the end of the year festive season? This is unreasonable.

Posted by awada ny on Oct 29 2009

God help us all. Things are falling apart and the center cannot hold. It is apparent that Nigeria is a fail state. A week ago Ondo's state assembly members started an indefinite recess. Reason? Lack of security for their personal safety. Ah..ah!! The real robbers, thieves, thugs, murderers, degenerates and morally bankrupt politicians are begging the petty robbers to cease fire for the foreigners who will be staying in the country for 30 days? Even if the street arm robbers agree to go along with the politicians' demand, will the power industries provide 30 days of uninterrupted electricity for the event and for Nigerians at large. What about the state of our decayed and decapitated infrastructures, such as tarred roads, running water, hospitals, reliable and clean transportations. Above all, human resources like police officers, first responders and ordinary citizens that will be in direct or indirect contact with these foreigners. Would these people demand bribes and kick-backs? I have an idea, you morons, I challenge you to take 30 days off without engaging in any type of corruption. The truth is, Nigeria ( with all her mineral and human potentials ) is century away from civilization, we all have you politicians to thank for Nigeria being under siege. Shame on you but the biggest shame is on all the citizens of Nigeria, both home and abroad, for allowing you politicians to do these things to us with impunity. Fact is, you cannot even run your own household talk-less of a state or nation. Why don't you do yourselves a favor, resign and go hide because revolution is inevitable. You and your families will be sorry, as Nigerians are getting ready to take their country back from you fools, half- baked idiots. Good luck comrades.

If I had read a story such as this in a crime-novel, I would consider it a bad plot. This tops the theatre of absurd called Nigerian politics: law makers telling outlaws to suspend or hold their fire. May be it is not as crazy as I had thought. These so-called law makers, as some have suggested, emerged from the ranks of the outlaws. So, they seem to understand each other. As the saying goes, there is honour among thieves.

How nice, hope they were given the date and time to resume work and I'm sure the robber? will be pleased with who ever is pleading with them, he now got immunity from them ha ha ha what a shame.

What an ignominy to Ogun State and Lawmaker, also to the police of Nigerian. Lawmakers show the ineffectual of our police Authorities. He also encourages the robber to continue their job. Not to tell them to stop what they were doing. Quote "I want to appeal to the men of the underworld to suspend their actions and operations in the interim because of our foreign visitors currently in the state," he said. "Then they can resume thereafter, because there is nowhere in the world where robbers and robberies could be stopped from their work." He then called on his colleagues to support his call on the armed bandits to soft-pedal because the situation is becoming worrisome" Shame to Lawmaker of Ogun State and Nigerian government.

Posted by akwaowo on Oct 30 2009

The Ogun state lawmakers ought to have appealed to the armed robbers to put a complete stop to thier activities rather than appeal to armed robbers to put a HOLD on their activities, irrespective of the reason(s), and AUTHORIZED the armed robbers to resume thier activities thereafter.Implying that armed robbers activities after the junior world cup has been passed into law in Ogun state. This action is worse than the activities of armed robbers and certainly gives our country a worse name.

Posted by Avon on Oct 30 2009

You will be amazed at the symbiotic relationship the politicians have with these bandits. They know each other. During political campaigns, they employ these bandits as thugs to intimidate the opposition or to rig elections. So its not suprising that these dumb ass politicians have these bandits on speed dial. Only in Naija can you allow thieves to resume their duties after a time out.

I actually agree to some extent with the lawmaker but advising them (robbers) to resume is sad. Understanding how the robbers operate and asking for end in violence is good strategy in law enforcement, temporary stop in any form of violence is better than continous and best will be a permanent stop. We all know that politicians are corrupt but a start to end violence is good.

Interesting! Lawmakers appealing to robbers not to rob foreigners. They should wait for the foreigners to leave and then continue their business of robbing nigerians. Talk about stupidity, sheer incompetence, ignorance. Why can't they simply assign law enforcement to the high risk areas and make everyone safe ... especially Nigerians that actually voted them into office. These lawmakers should be targeted.

Very Sad,What do you want the Armed Robbers to do after they see The Small Boys of the House Driving Expensive Jeeps on Naija's Terrible Road. No Light, No Water in their Houses. These people of the House sleep in Big Houses they built with Stolen Money. Let any of Them Challenge me and We wil check How they Got their Money. Even though not Fair, The Armed Robbers want to have their Shares. Naija need to wake up. People in Naija Love Big things and they won't stop until they have them even if it means Stealing it.
