Stockbroking firm denies owing Bank PHB

Print print Email email Share Share

FutureView Securities Limited, one of the debtors listed as owing Bank PHB has denied any form of credit facility to it by the bank, according to a statement issued by the company yesterday.

"We have observed with dismay, the erroneous inclusion of FutureView Securities Limited (‘FutureView') as one of the non-performing debtors of Bank PHB Plc to the tune of N3,606,120,840.16," the statement said.

Signed by Tochukwu Kemakolam, Group Head Corporate Finance, the statement further said, "Our amazement stems from the fact that FutureView at no time requested for or accepted any credit facility from Bank PHB Plc, let alone reneging on its obligation to service or repay the purported loan."

FutureView Financial Services Limited, formerly known as FutureView Securities Limited, was incorporated in March 1993, and commenced operations in 1996. The firm is registered by the Nigerian Stock Exchange and licensed by the Securities and Exchange Commission to provide investment banking services.

Threats of legal action

The finance company challenged the bank to show proof of genuine documents on any form of credit facility transactions within seven days or face legal actions.

"FutureView hereby challenges Bank PHB Plc to present genuine documents evidencing the application to it for or/and acceptance of any Bank PHB Plc credit facility by FutureView or any of its affiliate companies within seven days of this notice, failing which a legal action will be commenced against the Bank without any further notice to the bank," the statement said.

An official of the corporate affairs department of Bank PHB, who asked not to be named, said that the firm should have done the first things first.

"If they had written to us directly, we would deal with it and if it was an error on our part, we would apologise if we were wrong and if that is not the case, we would take the next action," he said.

"I cannot confirm to you if the firm owes the bank or not and I am not in a position to confirm that."

Not liable

The Bank PHB official added, "The list was published by the Central Bank and not Bank PHB. We are not to be principally held liable. Bank PHB did not publish any names and so we cannot be held liable. Though I cannot confirm the true position of this issue but it is not an issue. If they have complaints, they should follow the right procedure and the issue would be sorted out."

The Central Bank on Wednesday released a fresh list of debtors of five more banks. They are: Bank PHB, Spring Bank, Wema Bank Plc, Unity Bank and Equitorial Trust Bank, with total debt standing in excess of N350 billion.

The CBN, after it released the first list of debtors in August 2009, had to write another circular which admitted its errors on the first list of debtors. The errors, however, had to do with names and not figures or outright removal of any alleged debtor. According to the statement, "The bank has also noted some typographical errors regarding the titles of some government officials and some companies..."

The CBN's head of corporate communications, Mohammed Abdullahi, was however not available to speak on the issue as his phone was switched off.

All those debtors that are in government should be relieved of their positions immediately. If allowed to stay in governance, they are going to use owo abu to satisfy abu.It means, they will steal government money to pay up the bills. people like solude has no legal right to context for any position in the land because all these happened during his tenure as the CBN governor. Now, he is luaghing with his loots to context another election so as to ruin another state allocation.look at america democracy where people are relieved of their position for simple adultory/furnication.If all those people should continue to serve the country ,that means the president, senate, and the federal executive council has made Nigeria a laughing stock to the outside world. Thanks to the reminesence of secretary Hillary Clitton visit to Nigeria. wake up Nigerians and fight for your right.unemployment is high, healthcare is unaviodable,Roads are death traps, electricity are off for months and people are stacking those money in foreign lands. More greece to your elbow Sanusi and Wasiri[ CBN GOVERNOR AND EFCC CHAIRMAN]. WAKE UP PRESIDENT YAR ADUA AND PURGE THE BAD EGGS IN YOUR CABINET AND THOSE ACCLAIMED RICHEST MEN IN THE WORLD THAT ARE IN THE CORRIDOR OF NIGERIA POWER. DANGOTE,OTEDOLA,MARWA,ETC. GOD BLESS NIGERIA.

The same errors again. Doesn't CBN learn? As at late last night, CBN was clarifying that this list was as at June 2009. How about you publish the list as at October 2009? The CBN's approach should be so thorough that it does not leave any room for rejoinders or mistakes.

Its a shame that a bank (Bank PHB) cannot confirm whether it is owed money by futureview and they expected futureview to first write them instead of going to the press to deny ? My question to Bank PHB is did CBN write to futureview before it published their name on the debtors list. You put wrong information publicly and you expect their denial and challenge to you to be private after you have damaged their reputation.

Wonderment! What if some bankers use someone else name to book loans? Think about it..

Posted by Dolly19 on Oct 16 2009

@ Idris? U really believe all these denials? Hmmm? CBN may have one or two errors in there, but believe me, there is no smoke without fire. Futureview and its subsidiaries can not just appear on the list 3 times without any background story. It may not be a straight forward debt, it may have been a fall out of a complex transaction or whatever. But to say they do not have any issues... Hard to believe. As for Bank PHB, I hope they realise that CBN published details as provided by the banks. CBN did not give out loans and therefore can not have their own records of it.

HM M M !!!!!!!!. CBN should be more careful when they are publishing any information as this information are deformatory in nature. pls CBN should do proper audit not taking in everything the bankers tell them.

LET THE TRUTH PREVAIL.OTITOLOLAYE ORUNLOMO ODODO.

This is quite funny. I met one BankPHB marketing chap at a London careers fair where he was lauding this bank and its great achievements. I asked one simple question, how will you maintain the sustainability of this growth. He replied to me that growth was unstoppable, that was when I knew that BankPHB and most banks in Nigeria were involved in some kind of wuruwuru. Sanusi, keep up the good work and clean up these good for nothing idiots that think they are running a family business. How can a bank expect a business to write it and request if they are owing it, as a bank are you not suppose to know your debtors I should definately run a bank in Nigeria as it seems you can cook up your books without any punishment.

Is Sanusi Lamido Sanusi the Messiah?

Posted by KINGSKID on Oct 16 2009

What audit did CBN do? Are they not supposed to see approvals documentations for all these loans before publising them? Are they not supposed to circularise these socall debtors, when the bank can go to any lent to cook their books. It is not shamefull that each time CBN make a publication there is always a refutal? What signal are we giving the outside world? That we don't have accurate information? Please let us do what is right. Futureview has no loan whatsoever with Bank PHB.

Posted by John Iwudo on Oct 16 2009

I don't Sanusi is the Messiah, but he has the balls to deal with people that think they can take shareholders funds and run their family businesses. Soludo was not a messiah, he did some good jobs but failed woefully in regulating the activities of these MDs, Sanusi is doing something about it but that does not mean he will not fail in some aspects of the job. Nigeria will only move forward when the law is above the cronies. Without that The name Nigeria will remain a geographic expression with no person interested in its future.

Sanusi has a northern agenda. Why were the other banks not given time to beef-up their capital like UNITY BANK?

Posted by John Iwudo on Oct 16 2009

Kingskid, we should learn to support those that want to do work and forget this nonsense about Northern Agenda. Unity bank has bad loans but is not in a diabolic state like some of the banks we are talking of. Where do you think these banks will shore up there capital from ? Ans - by prostiting our sisters, wives, aunties and daughters to do whatever it takes to meet their target. EFCC has just declared Akingbola wanted for £10m fraud. Did he get this from his salary. I don't think so. I hope all the MDs will face some jail sentence.

Let Ms Elizabeth Ebi refute the allegations first, since she is the CEO and head cheese of futureview. Guys no smoke without fire. Even saw her name as listed debtor. Say isnt so Lizzy. Because it will be a shame that the wife of former deputy govenor of CBN will owe so much.

Posted by Omonabiese on Oct 16 2009

This is more or less a fabricated story. I want to believe that some people want to soil the name of FutureView. How do you explain publishing fictitous stories about an organisation knowing full well that such stories are not authenticated. What kind of banking system do we have in this country, where some other peoples/coy names can be used for a transaction they do not even know about. Na wa oooooo. I think her husband, the former Deputy Gov of Central, Ernest Ebi may have some enemies that want to reach him through his wife since they do not know how to reach him directly. This Naija, anything can happen. But may God vindicate the just.

not fabricated. the cash went to futureview. they started underwriting deals - with what capital? but what do you call a loan without paperwork? and can such a loan now not 'perform'?!!

Posted by GovernmentCrooks on Oct 17 2009

People keep asking - shouldnt he go after the govt thieves? why not get minister A, governor B? The issue is that the financial system must be cleaned up first - when it is clean then its harder to launder dirty money... i can lose my bank and the board can be sacked over this N1bn ..no thanks. cash wil be harder to launder, but we'll then see the mother of all property booms!!
