Ibori convicted twice, for theft

Print print Email email Share Share

Did James Ibori, former governor of Delta State lie to the general public when he denied in many media outings that he had been convicted for crime s in the United Kingdom?

Certified court papers, now exclusively available to NEXT, make it clear that not only is Mr. Ibori a double convict; on one occasion, he was sentenced alongside his wife, Theresa Ibori, (nee Nakanda) by a British court.

Media road show

During a whirlwind tour of selected media houses in Lagos last week, Mr. Ibori blamed Nuhu Ribadu, the former Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, for his difficulties, and accused the former anti-corruption agency boss of framing him.

"All he is trying to do is bring us to public ridicule. When (Nuhu) Ribadu raised the matter in court, my legal team denied categorically the allegation of EFCC at the time because Ribadu was the one that raised it," he said in an interview with the Lagos newspaper, Daily Independent, of which he is also the proprietor.

The former governor craftily muddled the facts in his answers. Whereas the question posed to him was: "Ribadu was quoted as saying that you are an ex-convict. He said you were convicted twice, in Nigeria and in the United Kingdom."

However, Mr. Ibori's answer showed that he was responding to events relating to his 1995 trial by the Bwari Upper Area Court during which a man named James Onanefe Ibori was convicted of negligent conduct and a criminal breach of trust.

At the expiration of his immunity in 2007 when the EFCC charged him for abuse of office and money laundering at the Federal High Court in Kaduna, Mr. Ribadu openly accused Mr. Ibori of being a double convict.

In his response to the Daily Independent, Mr. Ibori said, "they took argument for over two hours in this matter and the court ruled that all the allegations, everything that was said should be deleted from the court records, because if you say somebody was convicted, you have to bring fingerprint evidence."

Mr. Ibori added that "this was a matter they brought inside the (Nigerian) courtroom that was argued and denied by my counsel vigorously in the courtroom. It was deleted from the court records."

Probably unknown to his interviewers, Mr. Ibori was responding to his alleged Nigerian conviction, making it pass as an ominibus argument for his U.K. convictions too.

NEXT investigations, however, show that fingerprint evidence has confirmed that he was convicted twice in the U.K.

Both crimes were committed before he became governor, but it was with the dramatic arrest of Mrs. Ibori on November 1, 2007 at the Heathrow Airport in England that the London Police were able to put both incidents together.

The first puzzle

John McDonald of the Metropolitan Police, was the arresting officer who exposed the Ibori couple. As he wrote in his statement: "On the 1st of November 2007, at 2050 hours (9:50pm Nigerian time), I arrested Mrs. Theresa Nkoyo Ibori at Heathrow airport on suspicion of being concerned in money laundering.

"Mrs. Ibori was later conveyed to the police station at Heathrow Airport. During the procedure of booking in Mrs. Ibori at the Police Station, it is routine to obtain copy of her fingerprints," Mr. McDonald stated in a witness statement he deposed to on January 7, 2008.

Mr. McDonald explained further that "as a result of Mrs. Ibori's fingerprints being taken, a report was produced stating that the fingerprints obtained that evening were an exact match to a series of fingerprints held for an individual, Theresa NAKANDA, under the Police reference number 134269/90F. NAKANDA is Mrs. Ibori's maiden name.

"As a result of those fingerprints being matched" Mr. McDonald stated "I was able to establish that she was arrested with Mr. James Ibori for theft."

One of the series of fingerprints Mr. McDonald spoke about was obtained on August 25, 1990 at Uxbridge Police Station, an indication that Mrs. Ibori was no stranger to criminal acts, although Mr. McDonald did not dwell on the particular crime that necessitated the fingerprint of August 25.

A craving for petty theft

According to British court records, Mr. Ibori, aged 29 and standing at 5ft 11 at the time, was born on August 4, 1962, and lived at 9 Nower Hill Pinner Middlesex, England. He worked as a cashier at Wickes Building Supplies, Victoria Road, Ruislip, Middlesex, and earned 9,500 pounds per annum.

On Tuesday, August 28, 1990, three days after she had been in police trouble, Theresa Nakanda went into the Wickes Building Supplies Store and, putting her Uxbridge Police Station incidence quickly behind her, stole goods with the connivance of her boyfriend, Mr. Ibori, at about 8.30pm.

Mr. Ibori "Assisted his girlfriend (Theresa) to pass through his check-out without paying for goods whilst employed as cashier," was the way British court records described the former governor's act.

Mr. Ibori and his girlfriend (now wife) were then charged before the Crown court at Isleworth. Theresa Nakanda and James Ibori, on August 28, 1990, were charged for "stealing a quantity of goods..."

On January 25 1991, Judge Thomas convicted both Mr. Ibori and his wife and fined them "300 pounds in default 14 days imprisonment". They were also made to pay "costs of the prosecution in the sum of 450 pounds."

Mr. Ibori, who was represented by the law firm of Desmond Wright and Co., paid a total of 750 pounds for his crime.

Graduating to credit card fraud

A year after his conviction before the Crown court at Isleworth, Mr. Ibori, who is an elder of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) was back in court again, this time at the Clerkenwell magistrates court, in London.

Police officer McDonald stated in his witness statement that "I have made further enquiries into the criminal convictions for Mr. James Ibori and can confirm that on the 7th of February 1992 at Clerkenwell magistrate's court, London, Mr. Ibori was convicted of one count of handling stolen goods contrary to Section 22 of the Theft Act, 1968."

The offence took place on Thursday, September 12, 1991. Putting on a blue suit and a pair of brown shoes at about 3:50pm, Mr. Ibori was challenged by British police officer Michelsen who found an American Express Gold card on him.

When he was challenged, "he claimed to be Sean Burns, the card owner", the UK court records show. By the time the card was retrieved from Mr. Ibori, the "card was involved in 1000pounds of misuse." Mr. Ibori was arrested but granted bail.

The former Delta State governor was charged before Clerkenwell Magistrate Court in England on two offences, one of which stated that "on or before 12th September 1991 within the jurisdiction of the Central Criminal Court, you stole one American Express Gold Card of nominal value belonging to American Express, contrary to: S1 Theft Act 1968."

The court could not prove that he stole the card, however, Mr. Ibori was convicted of handling stolen goods. "You did handle one American Express Gold card in that knowing or believing it to be stolen goods, you did dishonestly arrange to receive the said goods. Contrary to S22(1) Theft Act 1968," the court ruled.

Can a convict contest election?

The revelation of Mr. Ibori's conviction got some human rights attornies debating yesterday that he ought not have been ineligible for election in 1999.

"If that information (his double conviction) was available to INEC in 1999, certainly he would have stood disqualified from participating in the election," says Jiti Ogunye, a human rights lawyer. Mr. Ogunye referred to Section 182 of the Nigerian Constitution.

Mr. Ogunye also said that "the revelation coming from England is an indictment somewhat of the Nigerian Judiciary.

Our courts of law are not supposed to be hypocritical platform for the administration of justice," referring to the now famous 1995 case where one James Onanefe Ibori was convicted by a Bwari Magistrate Court in Abuja of theft but in which the Supreme Court held that there was no sufficient evidence that the former governor was the convict, despite the convicting judge's testimony.

Bamidele Aturu, another lawyer, concurs with Mr. Ogunye "If somebody is convicted, under Nigerian constitution, such a person ought to have been disqualified at any level," Mr. Aturu stated. "It doesn't matter whether the conviction is inside or outside Nigeria."

Mr. Aturu further states that "apart from what the law states, anyone who has been found to have been convicted of fraud or dishonesty is not morally fit to be cleared to contest election in Nigeria. Otherwise, it will show that we do not have any respect for humanity."

Lagos criminal attorney, Charles Musa, agrees: "If he was convicted at any time after 1989, whether in Nigeria or not, then he was not eligible to contest." Mr. Musa questioned the effectiveness of Nigeria's security agencies for not detecting that Ibori was an ex-convict before he was cleared to contest.

Ibori again! Let's see whom he will blame this time around for the matching fingerprints. May be Obasanjo used his Owu's juju on the police this time around or Ribadu who is still hell-bent on being the IG bribed the UK police to lie again. One Onanafe James Ibori (OOJ)!!! We now know there is only one OOJ. May be he is our own James Bond.

So Ibori owns "Daily Independent"? Thank you NEXT for your great investigative journalism, this is how it is done unlike those other Nigeria newspapers.

There are so many ex-convicts in our political system today. I had always had reservations on the 1995 trial of Ibori and was convinced that he was the one who was convicted but because of the "government magic", as Fela would say, he was exonerated. It is only in Nigeria that this kind of thing can happen and our law enforcement apparatuses will keep mum and do nothing. We tahnk the British police for being very professional. Indeed, Ribadu was not wrong . . . Ibori is a thief and actually looks and lives like one.

ALL the issues raised and the implied indictment of the instittions concern are indicative of or point to a "failed State" status. Everyone concerned should just drop ALL pretence and just clean this country, please! Nuhu Ribadu was right and he should not have removed from his post... or did the US Secretary of State, Sen Hillary Clinton know what we now know??!

Senator Nuhu Aliyu from Niger State once stated on the floor of the senate that there are many criminals in the senate but later backed down. We must impress it on him to name them now. We must flush out all criminals from governance or else we remain the joke that we are. It is time we stopped the Iboris from coming even within a thousand miles to governance. Imagine...he even has the president's ears. Na wa!!!

If Ibori was convicted and the Nigerian Constitution states clearly that a convicted felon cannot be governor of a state. Where does that place all the activities of Ibori while he was masquerading as the governor?

I wonder how much of Delta state "oil" money has been stolen by this man since it seems it runs in the family, father and mother both thife, i wonder the children will x2 thifes. Nigeria, Nigeria, Nigeria, how many time did i call you? Pls wakeup and do whats right for once. A country were convicts and pepole win election from prison.

It is sad that a convicted man will deny and be supported by powers that be just to contest public office. Nigerian Judiciary is a sham. My law lecturer in school once told me he would seek to get his cases re-assigned if certain judges were to handle them because they were for sale. It is a double tragedy that his wife Theresa would accompany him to commit crimes since they were courting. This is an attestation to the decadence in our value system. WOMAN, WHERE ART THOU? Women ought to be the last external conscience of a man. But today, anything goes for our women. Relationships are now on a PAY AS YOU GO basis. So long as there is something material to gain, they turn the blind eye. A woman will willingly marry a married man or have relationship with one so long as there something to gain. A man in my neighbourhood who used to work with Springbank and was dismissed and shown on AIT TV for stealing with his friend over N120m was scolded by his wife of under 6 years for confessing to police that he stole(upon torture). The wife was not even concerned with his welfare or repentance but was concerned with holding on to the proceeds of the loot. This I think the guy embarked upon in order to satisfy the expensive lifestyle of the wife he married from a background where her own father could not provide her with the same level of material comforts. There are still good women out there, but very rare. The law in Nigeria is everybody stealing ios innocent until caught. We cannot progress at this rate. Immagine UK police keeping record of 1000 pound crime and finger print. Nigeria police we are still waiting for you to find killer of GUARDIAN's Ohu(WHEN DEM NEVER CATCH KILLER OF BIG MAN BOLA IGE)

It is clear that most of our self imposed leaders in this country are inherently corrupt and evil minded. I assure all of them that are making life miserable for Nigerians that GOD will pay them back in their own coin.

My goodness! I am actually tired of stories about this man. There is more to life than Ibori. Nonetheless, you seem to be on point with your facts. "Everyday is for the thief.....". BTW, as an aside, why is it that Idris Akinbajo is the person doing all the major Ibori/Ribadu stories.A little more versatility from the NEXT team.

nigerians;to much talk and zero action.lets rise up to the reality of our time and challenge our leaders to good governance instead of everyday political anaalysis and yet the criminals are in charge of affairs.

Posted by lafa on Oct 07 2009

all the pieces were put together by a matching fingerprint evidence. What stops the Nigerian Police from taking fingerprint of every arrested person and what stops the prison service from taking the fingerprint of all inmates? Of course, fingerprint would have solved this and many more issues like that of ghost workers, but those criminals will not want that done. to prove my point, fingerprint was introduced to Nigeria in 1922 and was even used in some trials in 1960. The late Isaac Boro wrote a book where, as a Police Inspector at Alagbon, he took fingerprint of every suspects and even corpses found on the roadside. Where and when did this practice disappears from the Nigerian Police? and what is happening to the Automatic Fingerprint Identification System (AFIS) procured by the Police some 2 years ago? I can say unequivocally that we are just deceiving ourselves, (and the international community knows this) whenever we say we practice democracy, what rules in Nigeria is ANARCHY.

ALL the issues raised and the implied indictment of the law enforcement, legal and security institutions concerned are indicative of or point to a "failed State" status. We should just drop all the pretence and clean up the country! Nuhu Ribadu was right, the man (Ibori) is a two time ex-convict (in the UK). It is therefore no surprise that consistent with his pedigree, he is the same person convicted in Abuja in 1995. Another conviction in Kaduna for the alleged offences (stealing fraud and money laundering) committed while he was Governor would still have been consistent with his pattern of behaviour and pedigree. He should never have been fielded as a candidate, let alone be allowed to become Governor of Delta State for 8 years! What have been revealed and the type of treatment meted out to law enforcement officers as is the case of Mr Nuhu Ribadu are indicative of a "failed state status" where structure(s) agencies and institutions of Government are broken down and so anything goes! I am embarrassed as a citizen of a country where the "elder" of the ruling party is a two time ex-convict, thief and credit card fraudster as per court documents! If nothing is urgenly done about this matter and the Presidency does not issue a public statement indicating that this felon is persona non grata in the Presidency, then I know that the war on corruption is dead! This is brave reporting from NEXT. Though this story had been published months ago on the internet, you guys are (as far as I know) the 1st Nigerian newspaper to print the details. But please note one small point before Mr Ibori's ubiquitous spin doctor (Tony Eluemunor) jumps on it. In paragraph 16 of this article, you wrote that Theresa Nakanda's fingerprints "were obtained on the 25th of August 1990 at Oxbridge Police Station". But a few paragraphs after that said that the theft took place "On Tuesday, August 28, 1990". Please clarify this 3 day gap. I do not doubt your story at all, but you also don't want to give Ibori's attack dogs any ammo when they fight back. I'm sure you know they will soon start throwing everything (kitchen sink and much more) at you!

Posted by mike oviero on Oct 07 2009

I just pray that God will touch the hearts of our judges to always say and defend the truth at all times instead of aiding and abetting our too-many-to-count criminally-minded politicians.Ibori was not supposed to have contested the election that brought him into Delta State Government House in the face of all the glaring evidences if INEC and Supreme Court had upheld the rule of law.

I am very proud of NEXT. The investigative journalism pursued by this paper is on a par with what obtains in the western world. I love the style where the picture of the thief is splashed alongside the news. The only thing missing (which we get in the UK) is the note at the end of your news piece detailing what police action is now in progress to bring the person to justice. This is where it falls to pieces in Nigeria. The famous Myles Munroe delivering a speech a few years ago in Nigeria accused nigerians of not being angry enough to want to do something about their fate. This same serial criminal called James Onanefe Ibori actually installed the sitting president into power!! I mean what the hell! The same guy convicted of petty stealing was actually put in charge of the treasury of the state grossing the highest revenue volume in Nigeria! Farida Waziri recently accused nigerian elites of mental disorder because of their psychotic desire for wanton embezzlement. Madam Waziri better expand that net, because over 140m of us must be insane to allow criminals like James Ibori to walk the streets, drive around in convoys, visit news houses and even stroll into Aso Rock when for the same 140m of us, if we were to catch a petty thief in Oshodi, we will beat the living daylights out of him before finally setting him ablaze with a disused tyre. Strange country, strange people!!

The depth Nigeria has sunk to! The way and manner James Ibori ran Delta State into debt before his exit in 2007 is a confirmation of his criminal tendencies. But can we absolve INEC, the Judiciary, the Government and Nigerians from the blame of having People in the Ilk of James Ibori running the affairs of States in Nigeria? In all facet of our political lifes, we have Ex-Cons determining the fate of the People. We then wonder why Nigeria is finding it hard to start? In a normal clime, James Ibori can not even vote as an Electorate not to talk of standing for elections. But he governed Delta State, the second richest State in term of Allocation from the Federation Account, for eight unbroken years because of the tendency of average Nigerians to accept filthy lucre and the ability of PDP to rig elections. Its is troubling that the Government of Nigeria under President Yar'adua and the Attorney-General are shielding him from prosecution. Talk of Yar'adua's Model of rule of law!

@NYABA NYABA - Why don't you start by responding to the fact of Ibori's graduated criminality that has been established and with proof too? He started with stealing DIY items at Wickes, graduated to credit card fraud, moved on to Iron rods in Abuja and by the time he had built up this "impressive" work experience on his CV, proceeded on to Asaba to carry out an alleged 8 year heist of the biggest proportions on the Delta State treasury. What a well thought out career progression plan. Obasanjo's day in court will come. But you're correct that it almost certainly won't happen in a court in Western Europe. It's a well known fact that he was and is still in the pocket of his Western power bosses. But until such a time as his crimes are established, he remains an alleged criminal. But for now, let us hear the new defense you and your fellow Ibori spin doctors have for the established convictions of your Oga. B4 you try 2 answer question wt question, answer this one first - Ibori na thief? True or Yes?

Posted by Kulikuli Juju on Oct 07 2009

With or without fingerprints, James Onanefe Ibori would have gotten away, as it were, since there was the criminal Police Inspector General IG, Tafa Balogun who James Ibori contracted with the sum of N5 billion naira to remove the substrata of the case files, right from the police station where he was first arrested up to the last port of his investigation. A nation peopled with rogues’ leadership has only one hope: disintegration!

who amongst us is not a thief? The time spent doing your own personal stuff on your employers time?, the taxes you refuse to pay?, the salaries you're sitting down on?, the loan you took from a friend and refuse to pay back?, I hold no brief for James Ibori but someone once said - a people deserve the leaders they get - a change can only come when we choose to do the right thing, it starts from simple things like obeying the traffic light even when lastma is not there.. i still believe in Nigeria and I believe someday, somehow, a change will come and the likes of James Ibori will have no place in our polity.

But I will like to state here that this man like most of the ones yet to be revealed and the rest that are still at tender age; are but products of the values that is celebrated in Nigeria. Ibori can be used for the brand face of our leadership. The man is out to out-do his bosses, dead and alive. MORE THAN WE RAISE ALARM OVER THE CRIMINAL ACTIVITIES OF THE PRESENT LEADERS AND FOLLOWERS IN NIGERIA OF TODAY, LET US RE-OREINT THE VALUE SYSTEM OF THE UP-COMING ONES WHO ARE ALREADY SEEING THE LIKES OF IBORI AS ROLE MODELS. Not knowing the worth of honour, we have come to believe that money is worth more.

Justices of the Supreme Court should be ashamed of themselves especially Justice Oguntade. They had a chance to remove this shame - of a petty robber like Ibori from being governor a second time. But curiously, they used a technicality to refer the James Ononefe Ibori's Abuja conviction back to the lower court. Ibori's UK conviction has been in public domain for many years but many Nigerian newspapers - for whatever reasons - would not touch it. well done NEXT. Posted by c.o.c. on Oct 07 2009

I read with interest this Ibori story and all the comments. Just one question. Could one be convicted of a criminal act if he knowingly contests an election he is sure he is not qualified to? Did he lie under oath before during or after the elections? Should those contesting elections be subjected to taking of oaths that they know nothing disqualifying them from contesting the elections. If that happens then they could go to jail for that at any time that was found out. So those who falsify age, academic qualifications and or earlier convicts could be brought to book. Is there anyway Ibori's case should be dealt with in such a way that it will serve as a deterrent to others. Could Ribadu's dismissal be re-visited? I don't know who can answer these questions. I don't see any harm in posing them either.

Igwe Czar, I hail your comment. The Country is in such a serious mess that we are wasting time discussing Ibori. Until something drastic is done to the Rulership (not Leadership) of this country, we will all continue to be world's laughing stock.

My concern is if only a judgment can be re-passed on Ibori maybe all other criminals in our power house can run away and those planning to join the looting league can stay back...Nigeria will be great like never before...its just "IF".

Please, nobody should accuse our dear ex-gov of being a thief. For all you know, someone else used have used his finger print and his face to commit the crime. I suspect Nuhu Ribadu did all that in 1990 (very crafty indeed!!!)

I have never been an advocate of the death sentence. How ever if this rogue, is found guilty in the Nigeria court of law,he should be executed. This will serve as a deterrent,to any Nigerian thinking the quickest way to enrich themselves is by getting into politics.I rememeber years ago,I was awarded the so called bursary award by the so called Bendel State Government.Nobody knew what ever happened to the funds.I am just thankful, that I reside in a country like America. So I really don't have to deal with the rogues in Nigeria.

the truth is that ibori is a serial thief; a congenital criminal. he knows and everyone, down to his family members know this so well too. the unfortunate thing is that his likes constitute the bulk of nigerian politicians; which is why nigeria is a basket case; a failed state today. such an unfortunate country we are. but how long are we going to die in silence from the bleeding inflicted on all of us by people like iboro. such a cowardly and timid people nigerians are.

James Ibori stop fire fighting these revelations and come clean, the game is up! The only Nigerian's singing your praise are those hoping to benefit from your ill-gotten wealth. Yes, you may escape the curse but you fruit of your loins (your future generation) will pay a hefty penalty - mark my word. President Yar'Adua, your presidency is built around a convicted criminal do you realise your association with such a common criminal has tainted the office of the Nigerian President? Yes, you may walk around Nigeria (and countries like Saudi Arabia) as a "Big Man" however on the real international stage you are just a laughing stock, I guess this explains your absence from the UN General meeting in New York. Was no invite was sent to Aso-Rock? They've probably seen your true colours! Ex President Obasanjo, well done - I guess you've punished Nigerians for their opposition to your 3rd term by imposing Yar'Adua on the country. Well, history will judge you, when we have the likes of Ibori, Yar'Adua in the inner circle of power it shows the real legacy you've left behind! Gosh, the depths to which Nigeria has fallen is unimaginable!!

Good job Next but you should have tried to get Ibori's response before going to press. I know all these while that Ibori has some bad skeleton in his cabinet. It will be exposed beyond any reasonable doubt and it he will not have any choice than to own up. No matter the amount of money he has accumulated, it will surely come to disgrace one day. Am not even talking about a puritanical and rule of law president who knows the truth and still hibernating with a proven criminal. One thing I beg of Next is to beam its search light on Orji Uzor Kalu and Peter Odili. Let them keep on running to our law courts to obtain one form of retraining order, their cup will be filled to the brim one of these days.

Over to you now AG, don’t disappoint Nigerians, don't make me loose my bet, we are anxiously waiting for your usual GAAF comments.

Question though, Isn't granted these issues would have been pertinent during his time in office. Now that he is no longer i office outside of stalling his future polital obligations what do they serve ? If I read correctly he was 29 at the time of the theft. So, forgive my ignorance are there concrete laws that bar ex-convicts from running for elected office ? Also, if those laws do exist, do those laws apply for people that were convicted in a foreign land and not governed by Nigerian law? Folks should let me know. Else it appears to be much ado about nothing really.

Posted by Olukayode Lagos on Oct 07 2009

somebody wondered what Aondoakaa (that is the unscrupulous Attorney General) will do now, with this set of new disclosures. I think I will like to add, too, that I wonder what our Professor (spin doctor) Nkem Akunyili would do with her spin machinery of information peddling now about Nigerians 'bad-mouthing' Nigeria. She had earlier wanted us to speak good of Nigeria, and I agree with her. Would she now still tell us to keep quiet and say nothing negative after all evidences we are now confronted with? Ibori, as the court evidences in UK had shown, is a convict. What says the Yar'Adua government? What says Akunyili? What says PDP of which Ibori is a chieftain? And what says our judicial system here (especially the infallible Supreme Court)? I think the judiciary is terribly compromised. I think Ibori is a sad microcosm of the biggest party in Africa, and, sadly of the specimens of people in governance here. If this government does nothing about the Ibori case and those of others yet to be so treated, I believe it speaks volume of everyone in power now, including even the president.

Show me a politician, pastor, imam, civil servant, businessman/woman that is not a thief, crook, lairs. If you are offended, publish your name, and we shall expose you. The only reason they are getting away with all these looting is that everybody is doing it at various level. A thief is a thief, whether N1m is stolen or N20 bribe, or custom exercise waivers. The truth is that most Nigerians will readily steal if given the chance. I believe that SSS are aware of Ibori's past before giving him a clean bill to contest election. If they don't know, God save Nigeria. Gani Fawehinmi challenged a notable gov about his educational qualification. Usurpers are everywhere. They can enjoy now, their days are coming. Their securities will not be able to save them. My people will pray, God will raise a Moses, that will lead my people to deal with every usurpers in the land. It will last for 7 days. The day is round the corner. Borders will be closed, all usurpers including their wives and families, looters will be dealt with. Every traces of their roots all over the world will be dealt with as foreign nations will have to hand every traces of their roots back to face judgement (Biblical). Please pray and fast on Friday to hasten the time. It is going to happen.

@chif please read your constitution very well se o gbo oyibo? Even if it wasn't spelt out in black and white, in the USA some people who were nominated to certain positions eg health and treasury withdrew and resigned after there were hints that they didn't pay a particular tax in a particular month, they weren't sacked (THEY RESIGNED VOLUNTARILY) imagine if they could honorably choose to resign on mere allegations (not yet proven) (some even declined the offer as they didn't want to mar the reputation that post was coming with) how much more here when someone is vying for the post of a governor and there is solid proof of previous criminal conviction. The people who wrote the constitution knew why they put that exception. They wanted our land to be founded on and guided by purity, transperancy and justice and not criminal compromise. If such criminals are allowed to rule, where would the justice be then? It is like saying that the chief justice of the supreme court of Nigeria could be an excon so that whenever he sits to deliver judgement there would always be bias...abi? Please @chif answer me o!

Posted by Concerned Nigerian on Oct 07 2009

@chif. Please read your constitution again, I won't say the section because you need to know for yourself so that you don't remain ignorant! Even if it wasn't written, why can't Nigerians like you understand that our founding fathers who wrote the constitution and put an exception for excons did so, because they wanted the land to be founded on the principles of equity, good concience, justice and fairness. Tell me, how would you feel if your case were taken to the supreme court and the chief justice was an excon 10yrs before then? Wouldn't you feel that there were some form of bias? Borrow a leaf from the Barak obama example when certain members of his cabinet resigned voluntarily on allegations of failing to make adequate tax returns for some period? Note that these were allegations, some even before their nominations came, came out and admitted that they were sorry and that the allegations were true and they declined the offer? How much more someone who is the governor of a state lying blatantly about something as serious as a criminal conviction. On wether a foregin conviction would apply is off no issue and is 'O.P.' Because a crocodile in london can't become a lizard when its imported to Nigeria? A theif is a theif these are issues of integrity and character. They go deep into the roots of this matter am very disappointed that you would even explore these weak points to justify Onanefe while the issues of his criminality and gross misconduct is are being treshed here. I suggest you have a re-think!

There shall be no escape route for the nation's enemies. Looters of the treasury shall be summarily dealth with. Those who escape the initial clampdown shall later be nabbed and made to account for their sins against their fatherland. In their plight, they shall be envious of the fate of those who were summarily dealt with. For the just, for the upright, for the true lovers of this country, for the patriots, and all those who yearn for positive change, it shall be the dawn of a new era, a prophesy fulfilled and a judgement foretold. For the treasury looters, manipulators of the electoral process, and those that brought the nation to this sorry pass, it shall be a day for the gnashing of teeth and a long hour of reckoning. Mr. Ibori tried to turn the gun at Mr. Ribadu and OBJ for his ordeal to his own detriment. He shouldn't have hurried to the press when he did. Mr. Attorney General tried to shield Mr. Ibori and co by making the most unheard statement "we all can not go naked after the criminals" what a shame. He should be stripped of his ministerial position first or better still resign for abuse of office. He is a disgrace to the legal profession. Mr. Ibori is a worst disgrace to governance and an abuse to the Constitution of this country by which he swore an oath as a public officer to uphold. He lied on the oath of office as a Governor.

Posted by Charles, Port Harcourt on Oct 07 2009

The Attorney General of the Federation and Mr. Ibori may fight back by suing the London Police for making public a confidential information in their custody that is capable of breaching the peace of the country and which in its context is also under litigation in a London court without seeking permission from a competent court of law. However, like toothpaste from its tube which cannot be pushed back, we all now know and will fight back with or without the Courts if they dear. Mr. Ibori, you better own up your past deeds and ask for forgiveness from God first, your people in Delta State and Nigerians. God will, we will too and your jail term may be reduced since you're Mr. Yaradua's back-man.

We should STOP worshipping ALL sources of unknown, sudden and ill gotten wealth.NEXT seems to be asking so many questions and it is strange that the Major newspapers seem to be playing the ostrich. Are they so compromised or is a misguided form of rebranding? The next phase in the Ibori scandal: 1. Get a certified-true copy of the due processes established by the British legal system and convictions awarded by the courts of competent jurisdiction; after paying the court registry fees. 2. Serialise these in our national media organs for the attention of the following: a. Presidency b. Senate c. House of Representative. d. The AGF e. The rebrander of our image, viz Mrs Akunyili f. EFCC g. IGP 3. Persistently demand for their comment and/or action until they can no longer, out of shame, refuse to act in accordance to popular calls, from the good people of this nation, for a cleansing of this odium. I will personally circulate the outcome of your effort to the 300,000 contacts in my email list. Hopefully this notification will bring this opprobium to the notice of the countries represented in our nation, and the global communiity, and will restrict the free movements of criminals to their capitals, as visas will inevitably be denied. Says it all. Nowhere in the "reaction" does it address the fundamental question , you be thief? This "reaction" is a pathetic convoluted attempt at diversion without addressing the underlying matter ie, a court sitting in Kaduna "decided" the documents were not admissible and should be expunged from the records. Of course, the court was right to do so because it could only entertain evidence shown to be beyond reasonable doubt. The court had neither the resources nor jurisdiction, and I must add inclination, to verify that was the case then. A different court, sitting in London, and backed by the full resources of the Metropolitan Police will take very little time to verify such evidence. Which is why, in the ongoing London Crown Court case against his associates, their highly-paid defence counsel did not raise any objection in open court when these same allegations were placed on record by the prosecution. Keep it up folks, this man is not sleeping well at night.

Justices of the Supreme court that gave that tainted judgment should be blamed. All the money that Ibori stole should be returned to Delta state because Nigerian law does not recognise him as a Governor because he was an usurper when he was in the seat of Governor of Delta state. Ibori will not escape justice. He would pay for his sins and crimes.

Listen all, I'm not saying that the man isn't a thief, I believe with all my conviction that Ibori is corrupt but we need to get the full story; why was the evidence of his past conviction in the UK thrown out by the court? If it was in fact not certified by the British authorities, why is this so? did the documents actually emanate from the UK? the one way to clear the air is for NEXT to get the British authorities to formally confirm Ibori's conviction.

I would like to repeat what I said in a different forum a while ago. I do not believe James Onanefe Ibori's story. He says a court in Kaduna exonerated him from his London convictions. We all know how desperate he can be as a bribe- giver and there is nothing any Nigerian court says about Ibori that I will believe either given the way the Supreme Court contrived to let him off the hook in his Bwari Area Court conviction of 1995. That a judgment of a British court brought to Nigeria is un-certified is only a technical point. It does not address the contents of that document. I think Nigerian courts are just hopeless because a more conscientious institution would have saved this country from Mr. James Onanefe Ibori a long time ago. They did not and that mirrors the defects in the so-called Nigerian democracy which is no more than rule by petty thieves who have managed to graduate to huge money launderers. Pity.

everyday's 4 d thief...but surely,.....SURELY, ONE DAY 4 D OWNER.

Posted by Anjibobo on Oct 08 2009

NEXT great job!!! Please keep up the good work by not letting this story die till this thief is brought to justice. You have to continue reporting on this on a daily or at least weekly basis. Stories in other newspapers die in Nigeria and this is why no one ever gets caught. NEXT reporting will continue to push all of us to bring this to the attention of those in power till they are FORCED to address the issue. Once we can get Yar'Adua to disown Ibori and Edevbie, that will be the beginning of the end and then we can then continue to one by one, turn by turn send these criminals to jail. They are nothing but pure, unadulterated and fully fledged professional criminals. My people ' Aluta Continua, Victoria Acerta'

I hope Nigerians are aware that James Onanefe Ibori (the double convict in the UK and also convicted once in Abuja, Nigeria) is still working hard and hoping with the PDP to be President of Nigeria in 2015 or sometime in the future. There are already unconfirmed rumours that James Ibori may replace the current Nigeria’s Vice President Dr. Goodluck Jonathan as Pres. Yar’Adua running mate for the 2011 presidential elections. And since votes don’t count in Nigeria, what counts is Prof. Maurice Iwu, INEC and the other guy who will write the so called election results a week or two before the scheduled dates of the elections, the few guys who may thumb print the ballot papers in some individual homes and of course people like James Ibori and others who will pay Prof. Maurice Iwu, INEC and the others for their services. So wether James Ibori is a 3 times convict or not he is determine to buy his way to the Presidency thru the PDP platform. May God save Nigeria from PDP.

To me this is no news, because we all know that majority of our so called leaders are rogues, some are even worse than armed robbers, like wise some of our judges, they work hand in hand. But come to think of it that an ex-convict and a pilferer presided over a state's allocations for a whole 8 years. This can only happen in nigeria. This people know what they are doing, that is why they don't want this country to progress, even when the judge knew that it was the same James Ibori that was convicted, he relied on technicalities to discharge him, but to their shame a country that keeps datas, like Britain could not be fooled or look the other way like our officials did. What else does madam re-branding want to do, now that it has been established nationally and internationally that most of our leaders are criminals and that we use the instruments of power to protect them as the AG of the federation is currently doing? SHAME OF A NATION!!

what a good investigative reporting, keep it up. I make sure I make sure I read your news daily. Please do not relent. I am praying for THE JERRY RAWLINGS of Nigeria to come on--- I mean now--, I can't wait. Nkoyo Nakanda sounds like a calabar name, is she ? what a shame. They stole goods from a super market, stole some ones credit card, then billions from Delta State, and is the so called president's right hand man. RAWLINGS ---RAWLINGS COME ON.

Well, if lies sail for 1000 years surely 1 day the truth will catch up with it..... With out much talk, Nigeria is a country that hate truth and Nuhu Ribadu if not 100% truthful gat element of truth and thats why achieving anti-corruption campaign in Nigeria is just a fairy-tale.For Ibori there is always something to say. 234next; 'a true picture of reality, a realiable media'
