The Managing Director/ Chief Executive Officer of Bank PHB, Frank Atuche.

CBN to fire Bank PHB MD, other heads set to roll

Print print Email email Share Share

The Managing Director/ Chief Executive Officer of Bank PHB, Frank Atuche, will be dismissed later today by the Central Bank of Nigeria, highly placed sources told NEXT last night. Mr. Atuche's sacking is said to be a direct result of the failure of the bank he heads, to pass the CBN stress audit. The bank is among the second batch of banks that the CBN audited.

The Central Bank is reported to have offered the board of Bank PHB a chance to replace Mr. Atuche with an executive of their choice, but Mr. Atuche doggedly refused to resign thereby forcing the CBN's hand. All attempts by NEXT to reach Mr. Atuche proved futile.

Four other banks, ETbank, Unity Bank, Wema Bank and Spring bank are reported to have also failed the CBN's stress audit. In all cases, it is expected that their chief executives will either resign or be relieved of their jobs by the CBN.

Our source also says the Central Bank will pump N200 billion into the banks to stabilise them. The Central Bank is shopping around for capable hands to run the banks during this emergency situation. It is not clear if the banks will be allowed to stand alone or be forced into the hands of more robust institutions.

NEXT investigations reveal that the problems of Bank PHB centre around non-performing loans . ETB on the other hand is in trouble not for lack of money but a total lack of corporate governance, according to our source. Spring Bank was described as a shell, while Unity Bank is believed to be broke.

Two weeks ago, the Central Bank in a communiqué confirmed that it had completed the audit of 11 more banks, and was continuing work on the audits of the last three. The communique said: "The CBN wishes to confirm that examiners have concluded their audit on 11 out of 14 banks not included in the first exercise. They have also made significant progress on the remaining three banks and these are Citibank, Stanbic IBTC and Standard Chartered."

The Nigerian banking sector has been in a state of flux since August when the then new CBN Governor, Sanusi Lamido Sanusi, in one fell swoop, got rid of, the chief executives of five banks, namely Oceanic Bank, Union Bank, Afribank, Fin Bank and Intercontinetal Bank. When he announced the sacking, Mr. Sanusi said "these banks were unable to meet their maturing obligations as they fall due without resorting to the CBN or the inter-bank market. As a matter of fact, the outstanding balance on the Expanded Discount Window of the five banks amounted to N127.85 billion by the end of July 2009, representing 89.81% of the total industry exposure to the CBN on its discount window, while their net guaranteed inter-bank takings stood at N253.30 billion as at August 02, 2009. Their Liquidity Ratios ranged from 17.65% to 24% as at May 31, 2009. (Regulatory minimum is 25%)."

Once the dust settled, it became quickly clear that the banks had weak risk management frameworks and poor corporate governance, which resulted in the depletion of their capital and overexposure to marginal loans in the downstream sector of the oil and gas industry.

The five banks that were affected by the sackings have since seen a sharp drop in share price. Speculators believe their market value may drop to the nominal value of 50 kobo.

The CBN has so far injected N420 billion into the five banks for emergency capitalisation. The Central Bank also continued its cleansing action with the publishing of the over 200 debtors, owing more than N740 billion.

When are they going to audit the Federal Government? Is it only that banks to be audited? If that is the case, Nigeria is far from getting it right.

Posted by Toholo on Oct 02 2009

Are you a diversionist, or simply a little slow? Typical Naija of Whom We Constantly Speak. never able to focus. Why not audit them yourself? Nonsense.

its saddening that Patrick Utomi a man who should know better presided over the sham called Bank PHB. As the chairman of the board for several years, I do hope its on record that Mr. Utomi advised the soon to be ex-MD against sharp practices that almost resulted in the demise of the bank. Atuche has nothing to lose; he should resign and enjoy his loot. I am not sure the CBN through the EFCC will have the courage to pursue the personal assets of these greedy bankers. Even in the United States where crazy permutations by Wall Street quants almost crashed the world economy, the likes of Stan O Neal, Joe Cassano, John Thayne, Lewis Black,Hank Greenberg etc have not been held liable, beyond resignations. Well there is hope since our elders say 'every day na for the thief one day na for the owner of house'

The CBN is doing its job auditing the bank. If you want the federal government audited, that is the responsibility of the lawmakers. And who audits the lawmakers? we the citizen who vote them into power makes sure the thieves are removed. You cannot say just becasue some thieves in the federal government steals money, the CBN should not do its job in removing thieves within its own jurisdiction.

If these banks really failed under Solodo's watch, what is he doing aspiring to become the governor of Anambara State? He should clear his name first before any other quest for public service.

I keep wondering why the issue of Pat Utomi is often explored as it concerns PHB? This is a bank in which he is the vice chairman.Yet it has a perception and reality of cowboy banking. What documentary evidence is there that he is rockingthat boat? Why has he not resigned from that charade? I have little respect for Nigerians who pontificate and talk plenty theory, when given the chance to prove their theory, they disappoint in massive proportions.Their are lots of examples of such;Segun Adeniyi, Adams Oshiomole and Pat Utomi. At least when Commerce bank was heading south Gamaliel Onosode resigned for on grounds of ethics. Why can't Pat Utomi either effect change in PHB abd make it a model or resign as the position on the board is not a life sentence? Yet he pontificates about all that is wrong with Nigeria when he cannot change little PHB. It is easy to critize but walking the talk is the hard part.

Posted by KK on Oct 02 2009

All these cowboy banking must be curtailed.even if it entails cowboy tactics. you cannot eradicate it as long as the banking system is part of the Nigerian system but let the fear of Sanusi be the beginning of wisdom for bank chiefs and make them more circumspect even in their looting. This brazen acts of greed is utterly disgusting.

Bank Phb was just a pet baby for Francis Atuche. Just like the others Banks too I dont believe, that the board has any say in the affairs of these Banks. Most of them are practically one man show. Pat Utomi himself should be fired for allowing himself to be cowed by the so called cow boy CEO. Generally, the board members are just stuges in themselves and have all sold their birth right for that delicious meal called 'allowances and insider credit'. It is a shame

I'm not impressed. The mess was created by CBN in the first place. As the apex and regulatory bank of the land, this sort of laxity ought to have been identified and fixed before things start falling apart. Abiodun Giwa's comment above is very valid, even if it's not the duty of the CBN to do audit the government, there's every reason to make that call. How a nation of 140+ million people have its universities shut nationwide for 3 months, and nobody is worried? How can our Attorney General, the nation's number 1 law enforcement officer, go about defending rogues and criminals overseas? What's the status report on the Halliburton scandal investigation? Has it be swept under the rug too? etc etc Nigeria is really in a mess, let's face it!

Can Nigerians manage anything? Oyibos managed the country before 1960, and we had roads, railway, telephone, running water, clean gutters, GRAs, ECN, well maintained colonial buildings, a fantastic civil service (almost corruption free), a populace with good values, good government hospitals, a good educational system (primary and secondary) and a first class university. Now what do we have? Bank Thieves and the most corrupt management team both in the civil service and the private sector. Look at the multinationals - Oyibos have taken their companies back before Nigerians ruin them - Unilever, Nestle, Cadbury, Nigerian Breweries, Guinness, P&G etc. Where there are no proper Oyibos, they bring us Indians or some other Kora. Big shame! At 49, the country is still retarded. Good People of a Great Nation, we can still make it. 2011 is around the corner. Let us salvage this country together.

@ everyone, from all these comments I can see no-one is SHOCKED AGAIN....unlike August 14th. I also wanna think this rubbishes the Vanguard publication of March 23rd as there are now SIX banks and not FIVE! Also, I do not intend to hold brief for Pat Utomi but he is 'only' the VICE Chairman and NOT the auditor of the bank so he may only see what Atuche and co want him and the board to see. The cleansing of this banking sector is LOOOOOOOOOONG overdue.

Posted by Terna Avaan on Oct 02 2009

Hmmmm. Here we go again. What conspiracy theory explains this one? When the five were sacked, commentators fed us with theories of a northern agenda brewing. Does anyone remember, now, that the affected bank was founded by the Yar'Adua family? Yes, I meant the president's family has interests in Bank PHB. Sanusi, "be free, be you, be brilliant"; "impossible" is not in your dictionary (these are the things Bank PHB preaches).

@ Abiodun Giwa, You know what they say, It is better to be silent and be thought a fool, than to speak and remove all doubt. Just in case you do not know, the law makers are in charge of investigating the Federal Govt.

Posted by Robin Hood on Oct 02 2009

Abiodun Giwa , I will not be surprised if you are a staff of one of the banks. Your comments are off point. NIgeria's solution in my honest opinion is that we should hand over governance and Administration of the country to our colonial masters the UK(with UN support) for the next 30 years(A generation)to engender a shift in attitude.During this time, all proceeds from our economic activities will be held within our country except for the opayments for essentials not locally available. This will also checkmate the excesses of the colonial rulers. Upon expiration of 30 years they leave and get our thanks and fair compensation for their efforts in the form of our economic links to them. By that time, the present crop of leaders will have died off or rendered powerless and the up coming ones will have a different outlook with more enlightened populace who are economically and morally better off. Utomi I have always known was not the economic saint he wanted us to believe. A close friend and popular economist and commentator on national issues once accosted him at the airport to suggetst some economic ideas to the president Obasanjo and all he could say was something akin to; I no sabi too much book

I am holding brief for no one but if truth be told Pat Utomi is one of the Nigerians who is really trying to inspire change in the youth and until CONCRETE evidence is provided of any wrong doing on his part....PLEASE LAY OFF HIM!

I know of a town in Delta called Ibuzor. Frank Ajidua comes from there. Sebasten Adigwe also comes from there. Francis Atuche is also from there. Were does Pat Utomi come from? People should spare us big grammar which they quote from books they have managed to read. The truth is that if you continue to associate with people who are fraudulent you cannot claim to be clean even if you talk big grammear and pretend that you are the best president we should have. If you don't like the soup they are preparing then leave the kitchen early enough and say so to the whole world. Ask Onosode how he performed his magic in Commerce Bank. He left because the CEO and his men were misbehaving and within a year the bank came down. Nigerians please let us be wisher when we listen to all these grammar.

I'm totally in tune with you Big boss. Like what Rev Fr Kukah wrote in the Guardian Newspaper of October 1st,we need a new power elite that will be selfless, pure and with a national principle that will come to describe this good people and great nation being ruled presently by a cabal of thieves, murderers, looters and unrepentant criminals we call politicians. We will only get it right the day we decide to see all Nigerians as the same people and not the present enthno-religious diversity which has become a curse instead of blessing to us as a people.A day that our children will all say i am a Nigerian and not I'm an Hausa, an Ibo or a Yoruba man.

We all talk and talk and write about bad leaders and so on. We are not moving. We should act. Let young people who are concerned form networks - social/political (not necessarily getting involved in the present politics)- at clubs, churches/mosques and hold serious, regular discussions (as you do in your churches/mosques - the energies for attending the shillos, the nasfats could be used in recuing Nigeria from nimcompoos. It is NOT going to be immediate but it will work on the long run and especially if these rouges and useless leaders notice that you are mobilizing, working...in your communities/social networks. Do not stop talking but the talk should be in RAISING consciousness. Hassan Kukah and the like wite in The Guardian : how many of the readers vote? Let the young and concerned Nigerians go to their communities to talk one on one and at meetings. You will NEVER make a mark (as you will never be registered in their political parties)until you find your own ways of reaching the people.

All the theory he spouts should have been put to use in PHB and if not given the chance, quit and let the world know that you walk the talk. Why should Bank PHB be cut a 'slack' by allowing its board to choose who to replace the MD ? There is something fishy here. The first five banks whose MDs and CEOs were sacked without notice were not offered this respite granted by the CBN to Bank PHB. It simply shows that Sanusi, the CBN Governor, has an axe to grind with those sacked earlier. He should apologise to those sacked MDs/CEOs for the embarrassment caused them, their family and Nigerians as a whole. What is the benefit of the whole process to the Nigerian Economy ? I believe Sanusi is not ignorant of negative attendant ripple effects caused by his actions. The Nigerian financial sector is simply in a state of flux. The so- called European financial sector he is emulating does not act the way Sanusi has done. He has allowed emotions to cloud his good judgement. Ironically, it was this same Atuche who was cheering Sanusi on when the axe descended on the first five banks. Though, he (Atuche) was given the opportunity to choose who to replace him, he found it difficult to leave his seat, thereby forcing his friend Sanusi, to act against him. And i hope he will learn 'good, better Bank PHB' lesson from this; 'Those who leave in Glass Houses should not throw stones' and for Sanusi, if you are working in the market place, do not throw stones because if you do , it just might hit your own.

Unfortunately that is the case. the Nigerian system is so corrupt and inhibiting that in the end whoever is involved in its substructure will either conform willinly or unwillingly. I dare any of you loud mouths to try, in a few years we will all read about you as some Atuche or whatever. The fact is that the Sysytem is sick and whoever gets involved will become sickened. Why do we have to implement agenda of individuals, yesterday was Solodo’s agenda, it is Sanusi’s today, who knows who’s agenda it would be tomorrow. We keep celebrating individuals and tie the success of the processes they manage to them when we all know that simple and transparent procedures can solve these problems. We spend our valuable time thinking about the loots; condemning the people taking advantage of our vulnerable processes and procedures to loot; spend some much money on investigation without paying attention to why it is still easy for this number of looters to succeed during and after the likes of Ribadu and Waziri; Soludo and Sanusi have served this country. Let’s work on way forward: put up a procedure; review the procedure time-to-time; implement and enforce the procedure; give a transparent report on the implementation. I am not too sure if CBN is as half organized as these Banks, that is why fire brigade is the only approach they have.

Let this also serve as a lesson for us bankers who jump from one bank to the other just because your friends in those banks claim they are paid double of what others earn. Obviuosly their so called 'highest paying banks' have no vision coupled with all the 'hype commercials'and supposedly 'inspirational quotes', we shouldn't always be carried away by these 'financial lusts'. Please look out for a stable institution and not the 'razzmattazz' so you dont regret later on. Now all the 'highest paying bankers' sleep with one eye open. Some left their workplace of 'real peace'to throw themseleves in 'elusive peace of mind' only to be throwing their CVs here at the 'not so high paying' banks they did not care about. Putiing their families at the risk of probably not being able to cater for the responsibilities God has given them. Bankers can now think twice at least...

Then on to University with our country's six universities at the time among the best in the world. The great UI, UNN, Unife, Abu, Unilag and Uniben attracted staff and students from all over the world. Lecturers went on sabbatical annually to the world's best universities, Academics was vibrant without suffocating politics. VCs were the best the universities can find, not tribal warlords, lecturers were scholars who made first class or good two ones, not some beer parlor owner who shuttles between three different university campuses selling hand-outs and plagiarized text books and sexually-harassing female students in his wake . Libraries and university bookshops were well stocked with current editions and our universities were awash with research grants. In your generation, all that is gone and you want to go to school. In my generation it was students who went on strike to protest the ills of the society. And many times lives were lost. Your generation accept sponsorship from INEC for your NANS conferences, so anything that goes wrong with elections does not concern you. Your generation is happy to "block" lecturers as long as they offer you good grades. It does not matter if you have learnt nothing. Not that I blame you, its what you chose to learn from people in my generation as can be seen in the number of crooks we have thrown up into society. However hope is not lost, make sacrifices, things will look up if we make the right choices in 2011. We still have good people that can amke this nation great.

@ Sis Jane. I had to read my comments again to make sure we are on the same page. I am a Lady also, I did not suggest that lady bankers are selling their bodies to get deposits. Read my comments again. The point is that I have been accosted in the past one month on the streets by young men and women from different banks asking for deposits for their banks. Madam AGM are these bankers also? In your opinion is something not wrong here? Is this how banking is done elsewhere?

CBN governor & his aides are on the right path and should be left to do the cleansing at this stage to save the financial industries from messy deeds. I know you and U have all our supports.Release other lists of terrifying debtors who still go about in saint like.

The banking reform ongoing is a good thing. With a strong banking sector underlining good governance would close any opportunity these corrupt leaders use to outflow their stolen proceeds to other countries. If the CBN actually does its job as it is supposed to this would strenghten the fight against corruption within the Country. As there would be no way for capital flight of cash. This should also be stemmed with other exitable exit to the country. The airport, the roads, the waterways where unexplainable cash leaving should be seized. In Nigeria, if people want to really stop corruption and bribes then why not use your cellphones. You have cellphones with cameras and video recordning capabilities. Each one of a Nigerian as witnessed such evil behaviors. To stop this trend one can open up a website ireportcorruption. Something like Youtube where all National Citizens can post these images of corrupt individuals. Common men and Politicians disobeying the law and make it aware. This can be called the Cellphone Revolution of Nigeria... Just a thought.

I knew Bankphb would not have survived the storm. Their risk assessment procedure is about the weakest in the banking industry. I could racall how we do apply for loan and get it approved within four days when i was in Nigeria.Though i paid up my loan before i left Nigeria but i still know many colleagues who have lost their jobs due to capital market crisis, who also got loans from PHB. Nigeria actually needs this revolution.

I'll follow the crowd that says Nigerians talk too much but act very little. We love ourselves too much to the extent that very few if any at all can lay down their lives for this country we call our own. How then can we stop bare faced, broad daylight robberies by our so called leaders? Look at what happened in Guinea,I know it can happen in Nigeria and the soldiers and policemen will go scot free. If Prof Utomi had honour and integrity,he would have resigned from the Board of PHB. Honour is another thing completely lacking in our society. We really need God's intervention in our country 'cos our multitude of problems keep increasing but I know it'll only take one strong, honourable, selfless and visionary person like Moses of Isreal to pull us out of the impending abyss. To those who feel we're idle, posting 'useless' comments..why spend time reading? You'realso part of the 'uselessness'.

I THANK THE CBN GOVERNOR AND HIS TERM FOR HIS GOOD WORK IN AUDITING OUR BANKS. The problem with our banks is that most of the CEO's of our bank THINK that the bank is their personal property and also the can manage it as the like, with anybody questioning them. this illicit act have made our most of our banks to went down and got stressful, not because they don't have customers nor no deposit but because those on top that called themselves CEO's and the Executive Directors have taken it as the property and as a House Wife they can Manage and Control. It is a very big Absurd to our Country at Large. Please Mr. Governor I think all this Bank Chief should face the beating drum and dance any tone of music of any kind that is involved.

Probably not what you intended to say but that's what you wrote. Meanwhile, let's watch this space for details of CBN's audit? Atuche has already resigned, apparently. That alone says volumes about Sanusi's courage. This is just Act 2, Scene 1. There is still more drama on th way. Meanwhile, Chykomometum, keep talking.

The apex bank shouldn't shilly shally to sanction the MDs of any culpable banks after its second stress test because what's sauce for the goose's also sauce the gander, they say. In the same vein, I'll appeal to Nigerians not to either emotionally or destructively misconstrue the cleansing exercise of the country's financial sector as an heinous one that's only mechanized to usurp some prominent people and nationalize the banking industry. As an undergraduate,I wish appropriate machineries could take a clue from the CBN by flushing out and putting an end to the seemingly irredeemable banes of our educational sector by tackling the ever increasing problems of our diseased educational sector e.g unqualified lecturers, substandard varsities, inconducive learning enviroments, unreasonable and unjustify tuition fees, incessant industrial actions, lecturers' unending remuneration saga, among others. By doing similar thing, perhaps,Nigeria students and Nigeria in general would gladly heave a sigh of relief. Also,I doff my hat for Sanusi's bravery, resilience and tenacity.

ABIODUN GIWA IS ONE HUNDRED PERCENT CORRECT! We would all love to see corruption eliminated (or reduced to the barest minimum) in Nigeria, and accordingly every little bits helps, but as the Good Book says "Why do you look at the speck that is in your brother's eye, but do not notice the log that is in your own eye?" The is an Office of the Auditor-General of the Federation (whose occupant one presumes duly collects his/her salary) with the responsibility to audit and publish the accounts of the FG, yet there seem to be no such audit or ramifications year- after-year. He who comes to equity must do so with clean hands, and accordingly one one of the most corrupt institutions in Nigeria (the govt) embarks on an audit of others, people must be forgiven for pondering about a hidden agenda. An institution that lacks integrity bestows little credibility in its actions. Accordingly, I FULLY SUPPORT ABIODUN GIWA'S POSITION!

The initial problem started with Mr Soludo who seems not to know that N25 billion shareholders fund is not cash. Further to this, is his failure to heed to the advice of other people to categorise banks into small, medium & Large. He forced & coerced them to merger despite his statement that no bank will be closed but will not participate in forex mkt, manage reserves etc. After all, some of the microfinance banks are still surviving today and they are not benefiting from the aforementioned carrots. The upsurge in going to capital market to raise funds by banks is an indication that, the real cash was not there (I mean in the so called shareholders funds). Margin facilities syndrome is as a result of no expertise in that area. The banks just plunged into an ocean of margin facilities without competent staff. The present scenario is a consequent effect of Soludo solution. Where is ThisDay newspaper that used to give different awards to the Banks. Best banks in this and that without knowing that they are best banks in pranks, voodoo banking, lunatic appetite for creating bad loans.

@ BIG BOSS: Oyibos did not build UNN, Unife or Unilag. Even Uniben was only set up during the Gowon era. And exactly how many Nigerians had access to those colonial era govt colleges? With all due respect, the colonial era was a period during which the local educational zenith was usually a Primary Six school leaving certificate; when handwriting was a great skill because the most important consideration was record-keeping of tax collections and control of the local population, which was actually overriding function of the "fantastic" civil service; when the much-vaunted agricultural sector was actually singularly focussed on the production of raw materials (cocoa, palm products, groundnuts, hides and skins, rubber, etc) for export to our colonial masters and not to feed the population; when the railways corporation was about the most important (and most lucrative) national institution and its rail lines ran directly from the raw material sources to the ports, because it was considered of greater importance to get such raw materials to the colonial powers and to import their finished goods to our markets rather than to actually ferry the population around our vast territory. And why would public utilities like water and electricity not appear adequate (despite just one plant at Kainji) when the overwhelming majority of the indigenous population were effectively marooned in the rural areas and villages, mostly without the benefit of basics (not even indoor plumbing) nor with any significant access to remotely suitable educational or employment opportunities. Not to mention that there is little genius involved in building huge multinationals (the Unilevers, Cadburys, etc) on the back of approximately a century of colonialism with access to cheap raw material sources and captive markets. Please stop glorying colonial rule: it was an UNMITIGATED DISASTER!

I read the review by Mr. Ola Vincent on the on-going Banking audit in Guardian I believe it was three weeks ago. It is still the best informed comment as he masterfully explained the need for reaction of the mgt to the audit b4 action, trust in the system and repairing the banking sector. What I find interesting is that no one including the shareholders, bankers, newspapers are pushing the CBN to publish the audit reports on it's website for general circulation to enable Nigerian read, digest and possibly reach an informed conclusion of the audits abi since the Banks are publicly owned (save ETB) and the audit report relates to the administration of the Banks by pple who have a duty of care under CAMA and their respective memos, there should be a right to be availed of the audit report. This is especially important when you consider that all these Banks have the beneficiary of glowing reviews by the same CBN in the recent past. What is happening here and on most comments regarding the Banking sector is the crucify by public acclaim brigade: CBN has found them guilty there4 they are guilty. CBN has found them clean, there4 they are clean. Deeper issues, how did CBN allow this to happen? To what extent were the afflicted banks affected by misfeasance, malfesance or recklessness on the part of their Directors? What is the culpability of all the purchasers who bought into the shares hype expecting 100% or more returns for doing nothing etc etc As a cerebral posting stated herein, the Institutions that we failed to build are the reasons for this mess that we are in. Until we build the institutions, and render them impersonal and not subject to the whims and caprices of their current ruler[s], we shall continue to have these problems in a constant systemic manner.

The short comings of Sanusi lies in the fact that he is concentrating on huge portfolio debts while forgetting that the small customers are the one who don't have a voice and who suffer from the banks arbitrary business practices and non compliance with the Bankers tariff

Posted by Concerned Nigerian on Oct 03 2009

The major problem with our banking industry is that corporate governance has been thrown overboard. Have we thrown it overboard? No, you can throw away what you have had. I do hope the right thing to say is that corporate governance has not been institutionalised in Nigeria. Even CBN itself is paying lip service to corporate governance and that is why we are sick of this stinking rot in the system. I had lamented on this unwholesome situation long time to friends that care to listen. We are doing guerrilla banking in Nigeria that does not pass the minimum standard of banking rules and regulations in many civilised countries of Europe and North America. Do you call it ‘ambushed banking’ my friend out there? This ugly situation was unfurled on our land by long years of military rule. Many of the 87 banks that later metamorphosed to 25 banks were founded by some retired military personnel and their civilian apologists who fed fat on our nation. These retired military personnel and their civilian collaborators, threw up some men and women with questionable credentials as MDs of many banks. This is not to say that we don’t have few crops of MDs with integrity in our land, who can stand shoulder to shoulder with their colleagues in Europe and North America. A situation where some banks are declaring questionable billions of Naira at the end of financial year without any agency to verify the veracity of their claims leaves much to desire. Some of them have no foundations where they can give scholarships to our students or health grants to support our tottering hospitals all over the country. I believe some of these banks in trouble declared ‘creative’ billions of Naira as profits last December. Some MDs of our banks perform illicit activities by using depositors’ monies to fund presidential, gubernatorial and senatorial elections. Ask the SSS how much these banks in convulsion contributed to the OBJ and Yar Adua presidential projects, including some gubernatorial and senatorial projects of some governors and law makers, you will shed tears for our land if you see the staggering colossal amount. Their political donations are usually off records, you can read them in the newspapers. Some banks’ MDs bribe some CBN governors too which make them to turn their cheeks the other way round. Some board members of some banks are collections of men and women of shoddy characters, while we have few men and women of reputation in some boards out there. Some MDs of banks in our land are more powerful than their boards; and many board members were handpicked by them. Many MDs shop for ‘trusted’ allies as board members who will not ‘rock the boat’ at the end of the day. We should not forget that many of the board members in Nigeria are businessmen and women, they sometimes use their privileged positions as board members to get some ‘privileged uncollaterised’ loans from their MDs. In this situation, a compromised board will become a toothless bulldog, which can not perform its oversight functions of checkmating the excesses of its MD. More worrisome is the fact that such compromised board will eventually compromise the business ethics and corporate governance. There are too many unhealthy corporate governance issues in our system. Have we thought about the health of many Nigerian bankers?. A good percentage of them many not live up to age 50. Why? It is in Nigeria that ILO’s maximum working hours are not observed in the banking industry. Also, ILO’s recommendation on payment of overtime for workers is not observed in our banks. Some couples go to work from 5.30am or 6.00am and will not leave office until 8.00pm or 9.00pm. They may reach their homes around 11.00pm. Thanks to sickening traffic jams in some of our cities, especially Lagos. Ask for the statistics of young men and women that are dying in the Nigerian banks per annum and you will weep for the nation. Many of them collapse in the banking halls and die because of over work. Can you compile the list of brilliant, young and elegant ladies that their futures have been destroyed through exposure to rabid libidos of some of our rich men in the name of sourcing for unrealistic deposits? Many of them may not get married in their lifetime, and few who may get married are likely to get broken families. In Europe, these bad corporate governance and business ethics issues are not condoned. But they are flourishing in our land because our political leaders – military and civilians – are the patrons of these banks. No matter how unethical their means of getting deposits, they are not bothered as long as they get fat dividends at the end of the financial year. Are you aware of unpaid dividends? Some banks, do you mention Zenith, not me, have not paid dividends to their shareholders up to two times since 1995 when they recapitalised. What about delay in issuance of share certificates? Many of us are victims. Are there any limits to the extent which some MDs should travel outside the shore of Nigeria? Do you remind me of the juicy overseas travel allowances they claim? The current Sanusi cleansing exercise is just a tip of the iceberg. He is still scratching the rot in our banking industry on the surface, much more needed to be done in the areas of bank’s staff healthy living and shareholders’ timely payment of their dividends, and many corporate governance questions begging for answers. Long Live Federal Republic of Nigeria.

OK, let's stop all this nonsense. The saddest thing that I have noticed is nigerians love to punish and see people punished. They think that problems are solved this way and that it'll serve as a warning to others. It starts from childhood, you see. no matter how small or unintentional the mistake a child makes, he or she must be beaten. It may address past issues but it's not a good model for solving them. It tells you what you did wrong in the past but not to do in future but somehow fails to help you decide what to do. As a result 'those men will be replaced by other men like them'. I know a lot about what's the economy shouldn't look like. No one seems to be clear about what it SHOULD look like and those are very different issues. As a result of the punishment mentality, we have not nurtured enough solution focus and creativity. We know what to run from but not what to run towards and end up like headless chickens. we then turn on each other so that we feel that we are at least doing something or punishing someone. It's not the way forward, people. @ Onome/Sis Jane - Bank employees who roam the earth seeking deposits are salespeople not bankers. They're not marketers either as that would imply that they had some technical skill and strategic awareness. I did it for a while and now I do proper intellectual work including Board papers for a couple of companies. Which brings me to the Pat Utomi issue. I don not know of a lot of boards where the vice chairman knows what's going on or has the power to show up and inspect the books by himself. Boards meet in a posh office a few times a year and do not get involved in the day to day running of banks (you may need to check the terms and references of the board of bankphb). the board relies on reports from the executives themselves on how they are performing, internal and external audit reports and CBN feedback to verify that the executives are telling the truth. If the feedback from cbn and auditors have been good, they wouldn't have had cause to worry unless there was another mechanism for getting feedback direct from internal sources for investigation. We have the right to specify what we want for a future, how we would prefer to see things run and we have a right to demand it of our leaders.

it is good and fine to continue to mentain good balance of destructive imbalance in the financial sector.if possible, CBN should call attention of Job placement to these banks.not only resigning, the should also try to creat more job to young graduate and maintain the empolyment status to some staffs especially that of Skye bank and GTB where graduates with good grade where turn like SSCE holders due no connection. These banks according to an inside employ only family related staffs. also i think we should hold our fire on Utomi and Atuche till the details of the alleged infractions in Bank PHB are proven. Meanwhile, Pat Utomi is instrumental to the establishment of Nigeria's leading business school and business newspaper, amongst other startup firms employing thousands of Nigerians. It would be interesting to know the track record of some of our internet warriors who want him crucified on the basis of his association with a troubled bank. I believe Nigeria would have been a much better place if we had more Nigerians like him.

Why are wee decieving ourselves? Nigerians should ask Madam waziri what they are doing with all the money Ribadu recovered from past governors or has the money suddenly developed wings?

The case of Nigeria is a serious issue. We need divine intervention to come out of this mess.In everything let us give thanks to the lord if not for anything that we are together and there is peace. Please let us continue to pray to God and stop throwing blames at people.
