Guardian reporter killed

Print print Email email Share Share

Tragedy struck the quiet neighbourhood of Odukoya Estate in Akowonjo-Egbeda, Lagos, Sunday morning, when armed men shot The Guardian’s political correspondent, Bayo Ohu, in his home.

Although he was immediately taken to the Crystal Specialist Hospital on Akowonjo Road, his bullet-ridden body was rejected after the hospital’s demand for a police report was not met. Mr. Ohu was then rushed to the General Hospital, Ikeja, where he was pronounced dead.

A hail of bullets

According to witnesses, men dressed in white jalabia (flowing gowns) and wearing caps, arrived in a white Toyota camry at 6.53am, and stormed Mr. Ohu’s residence. When they eventually found him with a wrapper tied around his waist, one of the armed men began to shoot at him. The assailants allegedly followed him as he stumbled back and kept pumping bullets into him.

Neighbours say during this attack, the deceased’s wife, Ochuko, had gone to church with her sister who lived in with them, leaving the late Ohu, his daughters and one other relative at home. None of them was however around the compound when the killers entered.

A cry for help

According to his daughter, 15-year-old Omolara Ohu, “We were coming from where we had gone to fetch water, when we heard the gun-shots and ran back. Later, we came to the compound and found blood everywhere. The neighbours now came and brought out his body. There was blood everywhere,” she said, crying.

She said a neighbour who saw the shooting told her that the initial hail of bullets left Ohu shouting: “E gba mi o! E gba mi o! (Please save me, please save me). Afterwards, she said one of the armed men was heard saying: “Olori buruku yen ti lo” (That idiot is gone).

Miss Patience, the late journalist’s sister said nothing was taken apart from his laptop and his cell phone.

“They took the laptop he uses at home, but they left his office laptop and midget recorder,” she said.

Police confused

Meanwhile, the police’s public relations officer, Frank Mba, who ealier told reporters that the case was one of “suspected murder” later urged them to disregard his earlier assertion, because when the white Toyota Camry allegedly used in the attack was found, the case became that of armed robbery.

“Whether this is a classical case of murder or not, this is tight, because there are no clear leads, and everything seems muddled up, with so many people coming and touching the walls,” he said.

However, he later told pressmen that, “Given the latest information before us, the case is one of armed robbery, because the men came in, made away with his (Mr. Ohu’s) laptop and his cell phones, and were armed. However, we are leaving our options open.”

A harmless person

The deputy editor-in-chief and editor of The Guardian, Debo Adesina, who had earlier gone to the morgue of the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH), Ikeja, Lagos to identify the deceased, said Bayo Ohu was a “very harmless” person.

“What would warrant this? Bayo was very harmless. But as the police have said, they will carry out their own investigation, while we will report what we have seen now,” Adesina said.

Until his untimely death, Mr. Ohu was an assistant political editor at The Guardian. He is survived by an aged father, siblings, his wife, Ochuko, and five daughters.

THE POLICE ARE PROTECTING CHRIS UBA WITH 20 MEN..WHILE THE RIGHTEOUS ARE LEFT AT THE MERCY OF KILLERS? WHAT KIND OF COUNTRY IS THIS?

Posted by Nelson O. Hambolu on Sep 21 2009

This is definitely not an armed robbery case. I am glad the Police is leaving the options open. The assailants remark has shown that they came for his life. The police should never close this sort of case; efforts must continue to find out those behind this sort of crime. Not long ago, I remember the instruction that no hospital should refuse treating gun victims. More awareness should be made to all hospitals to treat victims and future reports of refusal should be treated with severe sanctions. Police should start sensitizing the public of their limitation at the scene of incidents so that they can still obtain enough evidence on arrival. The ability of the Police to solve this ridle will increase public confidence on our law enforcement agencies.

This was obviously a contract killing. Someone wanted the victim out of the way. It could be related to his job as a political reporter or perhaps personal relationship at his job or elsewhere. RIP Bayo Ohu.

some idiots on saharareporters.com, on saturday said they want to start a revolution and they will start by killing off easy targets - journalists, bankers, etc, because it will be more expensive to go after big fish. my serious, though angry, admonitions regarding such reckless and thoughtless statements were met by curses. the next day this happens. hope sowore and his cohorts are happy now with their hare-brained rubbish, published with a fake name 'Jimmy Embaife'. guys stay in USA and Europe, writing rubbish with pseudonyms, refusing to engage constructively even when they can. Now they are wailing that this is govt doing. while i am not govt spokesman, what saharareporters did was grossly irresponsible - calling for assasinations, and even at a point mentioning my name as a target. interpol should go after those guys and their website should be blacklisted worldwide for overstepping their bounds. they were doing well as investigative journalists. assassinations and 'revolutions' should be out of their forte. may Bayo's sould rest in peace

Posted by TOPE FASUA on Sep 21 2009

How do we separate those killed by 'govt' from those killed by armed robbers, or from those killed by saharareporters 'revolution', led by hound dogs 'Jimmy Embaife' and co? We live in a violent country already. More violence can never redeem our souls. Only intellect can. Sowore should learn his lessons never to allow such hopeless fantasy take up space on his site. and i demand a personal apology. see part of what they wrote below: 'Jimmy Embaife' making 'huge sense' on Saharareporters 19th Sept, 2009... "In my head, this is a non-exhaustive list of what I am thinking about: • start with less secured targets like members of local governments (chairmen, councilors etc) members of Houses of Assembly and National Assembly. Members of their families will also be targets because they benefit from the looting of Nigeria. They can show their concern by advising their looting husbands, children, brothers and sister to withdraw from the government. By targeting I mean the killing of these individuals;... • compromised Journalists (we know who they are) who having access to medium of mass information for the benefit of the public chose to accept bribes • Ministers, advisers, governors and the president must be targeted and eliminated in this struggle. But in my head, they will not be my early targets because the resources needed to accomplish it will be considerable and failure may be fatal to the cause..." Winch cry yesternight, pickin die for morning... Maybe Bayo is one of those journalists he identified...

we would have to decide in the days to come, which kind of country we want to live. when supposed advocates of the masses lose the plot, they give space for oppression of those they are supposed to protect. because of sahara's proposition, more of our policemen will be farmed out to protect politicians and charlatans, and leaders will become more oppressive because they will see the people as their enemies. That is the real Hobbesian state of affairs. What we need, and what must be championed by these advocates, is a better policed state where people can feel safe to a degree. With what is happening in the banks, i personally believe that by some fluke, Nigeria could defeat its usurpers and oppressors, and there will be no need for these 'bloody revolutions' people like to ventilate about. We can all begin to work towards that. The politicians will have no choice but to fall in line. Just wait and see..

The wicked have done their worst again! Why Bayo? Why Bayo?? Never knew him personally, but enjoyed reading his contributions in Guardian newspaper. A friend and colleague of mine was gruesomely murdered by a team of Policemen who shot at the vehicle he was in for no just reason recently.Ahh,is this what this life is all about? Born to struggle to live, struggle to survive and in just one breath, this life is snuffed out.May their gentle souls rest in peace

Nigeria has still not changed with political killing, why leave all of us in fear. It's funny how a minuscule take the larger populace in it's hand. Barka-de-salah, peace even in the midst of war.

The initial hospital wouldn't treat him due to a lack of a police report? I hope that isn't true.

This is real tragic, the bigger tragedy however, is that the perpetrators may-will- never be found. The case of dele giwa is an example. And it will be business as usual for the media which seem to have lost the knack for investigative journalism for bread or safety.Adieu Mr Ohu

If the police has started changing statements at this stage, calling this outright murder, robbery then it shows that there is indeed more to it.

When are these hospitals going to stop this barbaric and insensitive act of not treating gun-shot victims without first seeing a police report? I think the Nigerian Medical Association needs to step in and do something about this ugly trend. Furthermore, I think such medical staff should be prosecuted for man-slaughter in cases where such refusal to treat leads to death. May his soul rest in peace.

Its unforunate that we still have to live with such evil.Insecurity is definitely a result of poor leadership over the years. I still wonder why a hospital cannot even attempt to save a man's life but is demanding for a police report that would take hours to produce. Its very heartless of that hospital staff who just sowed a seed that he or she would soon reap. Rest in Peace Bayo knowing the full wrath of God's judgement would come upon those evil men(murderers!).They have succeded in heaping burning coals on their heads. We are all human and they would soon perish in hell...Its just a matter of days!!!

It is preposterous for the police to confuse murder with armed robbery. SP Frank Mba is supposed to be a decent man beign forced by his force to do dirty job. His conscience told him the most likely cause of Bayo's death but because of the fear that his employers would be crossed with his observation he had to claim that the killer came directly only to Bayo's house within the estate, kill him first, not just with scare-giving shot but with a gale of bullets that eliminated his chances of survival. Any wonder when their IGP had to play the Thomas when he asked for photographs before he believed Nuhu Ribadu visited Nigeria to commiserate with Gani's family. What a police force!

Posted by duro afonja on Sep 21 2009

Armed Robbery?? for a laptop and a cell phone? By 5 armed men? of course this is an assassination. The Nigeria Police is one of the biggest problems with this country. We need to do something about this stupid request for police report for victims before they are treated. Is there a law to that effect? Whatever happened to the Hippocratic oath? What sort of doctors are these? Save a man's life first and worry about filling forms later. This is a dangerous country to live in. And the president is asleep

Posted by CSI on Sep 21 2009

Very simple...look at all the stories he was working on past present, and developing stories....there should be a clue. Obviously an assassination. Examine his work laptop for clues and contacts, trace his calls from the carrier last ten calls. Any calls that morning or night before. why was his cell phone and laptop taken? They probably called him to make sure he was home....They might have taken the wrong laptop, was he snooping around for stories about a big wig politician or connected Bank CEO....Don't let this be another Dele Giwa!

Posted by Okechukwu Nwanguma on Sep 21 2009

Why has Nigerian hospitals and medical personnel continued to stand by and alow innocent victims of gunshot wounds die simply because they have to see police report before treating them? Which law requires this? Successive IGPs have stated clearly and been quoted in newspapers that there is no law or regulation in or by the police requiring that police report must be presented before a gun shot victim is treated in any hiospital. Even for a shot 'armed robber', the primary objective should be to save his/her life in order for him/her to face trial. It is unethical, immoral and criminal for medical personnel to stand by and watch a patient die simply because of police report. That was the case of late Professor Chimere Ikoku, former VC of UNN who had to bleed to death because UNTH, the teaching hospital of the same university where he was VC insisted on a police reoport before treating him. He died while his family members ran from one police station to another to get a police report. The Nigeria Medical Association should make its position known on this issue. The IGP should restate earlier police position that hospitals should treat gunshot victims while initiating efforts to report such cases to the police. Unless sanctions are imposed on heartless medical personnel who pursue unfounded rules and practices, precious lives will continue to be lost unnecesarily. We can avoid this.

Posted by Imoisili on Sep 21 2009

Very unfortunate. I wonder when sanctity of life will return to Nigeria. These dear devil killers are on the rise because of their confidence that the inept and corrupt contraption in Abuja called "Government" and their greedy collaborators in the so called legislature care only for their belly. Lying has been institutionalized in the Police establishment. Under 24 hours, a suspected and clearly pre-medidated murder case has been deceitfully described as "ROBBERY". Cases like this in the past were not resolved. Neither will this one until Nigerians decide that their destiny lies in their hand and take steps to change the current political order in Abuja and other parts of the federation. And it will surely happen. Nigerians, BE READY!! If you don't, no one else will.

Didn't the hospital workers realise that police report would take some time to come out in Nigeria and not without bribing the police officer that would produce it? After the police report would be CASH DEPOSIT before treatment. I totally agree with CSI. May Bayo's soul RIP and may his killers never know peace. They will definately perish in hell. FOLKS, PLEASE STOP BERATING THE FIRST HOSPITAL. As a doctor, I personally know other doctors and medical personnel in Nigeria that have been locked-up (and even tortured) by the Nigerian police for treating persons with gun shot wounds (whom the police believed or later determined to be armed robbers), on account of a police-made rule prohibiting treatment without a police report -- even though there is no subsisting law on the statute books supporting this rule. This has prompted the introduction of the 'Bullet Wound Bill of 2008' at the National Assembly, but not much movement has thus far been made in that regard.

He wants us to believe that bullets were pumped into this man just because the assailants wanted to steal his Laptop and handset. Nigerian Police is nothing less than apology. I am sure a look through Bayo's work could tell alot. Thats why his Laptop was collected. A check on his call list could give a link. And I am sure Nigerian Police will find the killer - most likely a Politician. But as usual will cover it and we all will call it "another unresolved Murder case" Story!!!

Another life has just been wasted in a society eaten by the cancer of corruption. This is obviously no armed robbery, but a hired assasination. My heart-felt condolence to the wife and children of the deceased. May his soul rest in peace... Why is Nigeria like this? Why are we so corrupt? Why are we so greedy? Why do we chase after money and power only to oppress others? The system is just faulty all the way from the top to the bottom. The foundation of the country has been laid on social injustice and disunity. I'm not surprised that the Police is confused, because the Nigerian Police is always confused anyway. Even if the ignorant but innocent neighbours did not tamper with the crime scene by touching the walls,... what can a confused police force do in tracing assasins? Nigeria needs a total overhaul in every aspect of leadership and social outlook. I am not a police officer, but I think in this case, the first suspect is whoever Bayo Ohu was investigating and doing a media write up on... and what could it likely be... someone aspiring for a political post, or someone who has just embezzled some funds like his contemporaries. What a decadent society!

It is a very sad commentary to see a hospital rejecting people with bullet wounds because of some flimsy excuses, medical ethics says save life first in case of emergency before asking for money or any thing ells. For the Crystal Specialist Hospital to reject Ohu whose body was ridden with bullet was a simple act of wickedness and un-Godly. You never know if Mr.. Ohu would have been saved if you have giving him some medical attention. Secondly, What kind of nonsense is this police man talking about? somebody has been murdered in cold blood and you are there confusing your self with grammar "classical case of murder", "this is tight", "no clear leads", "the case is one of armed robbery" Just shut the fu.....k up. Lead or no lead, Nigerian police has never been known to solve any case of murder or assassination, When ever they come to any crime scene the first thing that comes out of their mouth is that we are carrying out investigation and that is the end of it, they will never come back to let the people know if there was any arrest or prosecution.

Posted by Emeka Madu (FUTO) on Sep 21 2009

This's really is a tragic way to end the life of a supposedly 'harmless' fellow. But it becomes even more annoying and fustrating when you decide to face the fact glaring you in the face...this fact which has become almost synonymous with murder cases like this-it would be left unsolved. I mean in this age of forensic science it should only take months before the killers are unmasked. And who say there are no leads, let's think of it, this guy is a journalist, a political one for that matter. Questions needs to be asked, what was he working on?why did they aim for his laptop and cell phone?was any other thing taken from his home? Perharps someone wanted him dead. Finally i must express my heartfelt sympathy to the members of his family and also to his boss and workmates but do we incidents like this to remind us of the state of decay of almost all sectors of this entity called Nigeria-health,security,transportation,EDUCATION to mention but a few. I urge Next to keep us updated on this case. Thanks.

I am sorry about the loss of a talented life, may God provide his family with the strength to bear this enormous loss. I am really upset the hospital will not admit him and left him for dead, the minutes lost driving him to general hospital might have been what he needed to sabe his life. Life is too precious to be asking for a police report before seeing a patient. I am totally disappointed in the medical system.

We need to change the law! What nonsense and barbaric laws will require getting a police report before treating gunshot victims. There are better alternatives if the Police is worried about evidence. Anyone who has ever gone through the process of a Police Report know that it is more of opportunity for 'bribe' even though it is supposed to be free than anything to do with the 'case'. I'm my few encounters with the Police they have never been useful. Our Nations security is with God! May God rest his soul and may his wife's and children's faith in Christ being them solace.

Yet another tragic loss of life. I agree with Dayo though. Before heaping curses on the hospital staff in question, one should ask "Why is it that hospitals ALWAYS demand for a police report before attending to gunshot victims?" Simple; In our society where the police are a law unto themselves, ANY gunshot victim is an armed robber until otherwise proven, which makes any doctor that attends to them AN ACCOMPLICE. Believe me, the first thing the police will do when they get to the scene is to arrest such a doctor and seal the hospital premises. It has happened on countless occasions. Even as a medical students, we were advised that after graduation, not to treat anybody with a gunshot wound without a police report. It's not about money or any agenda, it's about being imprisoned because you tried to do the right thing. The police big-shots come out and say one thing to the press but like the phrase "Bail is free", we know what what obtains in real-life. I sincerely hope the matter can be fully investigated and Bayo's killers unmasked so that the family can get the closure they fully deserve.

This is quite unfortunate.Really,as long as we have murderers, rogues, thugs and highly corrupt gangs ruling in nigeria in the name of politicians, these kind of things would definitely continue.Nigerians, home and abroad, let us be prepared to chase the present crops of rulers away to give room for decent nigerians and leaders to take charge.R I P Mr Ohu.

This is part of the problem with us black people. Every difference has to be settled by killing, murder, assasination, voodoo, black magic, witchcraft, call it want you want. As long as we continue to kill our best, there is no path to true development as a race. It is rather always "fight to finish" instead of compromise. It is clear from the way was carried out that there seems to be other motives other than armed robbery. On the other hand, it seems to me that the priority of armed robbers in Nigeria is to take life rather than to "rob" i.e. - deprive people their lifes rather than possessions. I still fail to understand why this is the modus operandi of armed robbers in Nigeria. It smacks of something totally evil. God rest your spirit Bayo Ohu.

This is really sad. My heart goes out to his family and all my colleagues at The Guardain newspaper. I knew him to be a very nice and easy going person while i worked there, just like most of The Guardian staff. This is really terrific, who is killing journalists again? Oh God, this is sick...

The insecurity in Nigeria is not yet over. We no it is not possible to eradicate crimes and killers like this, but at list there suppose to be some degree of security in Nigeria. I know the Lagos state governor is doing a lot even more than any body expected judging by the level of curroption in Nigeria. He should please step up his level of development a little bit to protect the armless Nigerian's. You can see how this young man is killed wether he is murdered or killed by armed robbers everything still boiled down on insecurty in the country. Where is good securiry niether muderer or armed robbers will not succed on their evil plan. It is time to creat state police to enable state governors control security in their domain, enough of this politizing of this issue. My sincere condolence to the late young man family.

The murder of Ohu by unknown gunmen in Lagos is another signpost of the impending danger and harm that journalists and other activists will suffer as our democracy is hijacked by some power-mongers. Those controlling political power and the economic system in Nigeria are increasing becoming intolerant of anyother viewpoint or the exposure of any of their ugly acts. As Nigeria move towards 2011 elections, murder, kidnapping, arson, etc will increase. Regrettablly, nothing is been done to correct the ills in our system. Today is Ohu, who will be the next.

it is a petty that the youth of this great country Nigeria still allow them to be used as killers, this is point out case of political murder may be he as reported something about one of this political holder in which they know it will affect their political image they can just decide to waste his dear life, Nigeria Police should do something about this there useless policy of not allowing hospital to treat people on emergency like bullet or gun shot, better still they should advice the hospital to treat the person and report the case to the police by themselves rather. May the soul of Bayo Ohu rest in peace

If the Police PRO does not understand the language spoken after they took his life, he should have asked. They went after his life and not an armed robbery case from that statement 'Olori buruku yen tilo'. Where do they trained all these clan from concluding a case before investigation. Nigerians are feared everywhere in the world. Babs, stay in a peaceful place. I ran away from the company I was working in Port Harcourt because they wanted to eliminate me.

Even your neighbour where you may find yourself will become problem. I ran away and once I finish my assignment outside, I will not take any offer at home. I was given an offer last year and another this year. I will go back and meet the people same blood is running in their system. Nigeria is too complicated.

To his killers, in the hand of God you people are clay. He can decide to melt you people overnight. To those that sent them the cloud of fire will open upon your family in a twinkle of an eye and hell will not resist you people coming in the next 7days. God must fight and avenge this case. To the police, you people should wake up and stop calling white thing black and black white. We are always embarass daily by white who have worked in nigeria.

To the faithful who know how to call their God, let us start praying for God to disappoint the mighty in power. How many people are they going to eliminate before 2011 no one know. God will disappoint this people. Dele Giwa was murdered like this. Can Nigerians even reason that they don't own their lives, eliminating someone when you don't know when you are going is like heaping coals of fire on your head. Let us turn a new leaf. Bayo RIP and the course you worked for God will finish it Christ unfailing name.

Posted by Amy O on Sep 21 2009

My sincerest condolence to the Ohu family on their loss. My heart really goes out to them, it is a terrible thing to loss a loved one – but to do so in such a brutal manner is inconceivable. Contrary to the story the police is peddling, I don’t believe that this was a case of robbery. You really don’t have to be a CSI investigator to know that this is not a case of armed robbery gone bad, but clearly a case of a targeted assassination. However until they carry out their watered down investigation, here are a few deductions I have to proffer: 1. Democracy or not - Nigerian’s are not really free. I have lost count of the number of journalists that have been killed so far. I remember a couple of years ago there was another journalist killed around the Egbeda/Akwonjo axis. Usually these are political journalist or at best those that push the envelope. To the best of my knowledge there is yet to be a single conviction on any of these cases (I stand corrected if there have been). Whether it is a Journalist, business mogul, or politician – it doesn’t matter. My faith in the Nigerian law enforcement to actually seek out these culprits and bring them to justice is zilch. 2. Respect for life in Nigeria – what a joke! I knew a woman who once threatened a friend of mine by saying that for just N5000 she can get people from “under the bridge” to come and roughen her or even kill her” – OMG, I couldn’t believe it. But it is true. Most of these violent acts are contracted out to people who have little or nothing to lose. 3. Someone – Anyone has to do something about that ridiculous practice of hospitals turning away accident and gun-shot victims without a police report. It is a terrible practice!! I am no doctor, but I thought the first rule of the Hippocratic Oath was “To first do no harm”. You harm the patient by turning him/her away from medical attention when they so desperately need it the most. I have read of so many people loosing their lives in that manner because they were not attended to quickly or they were turned from one hospital to another. And the question I ask those who practice such is “if that was your father, brother, husband – would you do that? Would you not want to stabilize him/her first and then ask questions later? Get the police involved, let them come and get the reports and so on. That is what they do in civilized countries. The patient comes first. What happened to US? I have read that this practice (though not a law) stems from the police but you all know that the Nigerian law enforcement is ‘whacked’ and is in need of serious upgrade or maybe complete overhauls. In the meantime, do we let more people die while we wait? Is there someway we can begin to make those changes while the entire Nigerian systems (health, education, law etc) catches up to the 21st century? To the commissioner of health in Lagos state, Lagos state is a pioneer state in many reforms and practices. I would ask that you look into this practice among hospitals with a goal to changing it. With adequate awareness and possibly training, any hospital that engages in this practice should be closed down. They do not deserve to be called a hospital– THIS PRACTICE HAS TO STOP. DO SOMETHING NOW!

When, O When will hospitals begin to save lives and stop asking for police reports... if they r so skeptical, they should treat the wounded and fetch police later to make sure the injured don't 'run away'. i can't fathom it, who in their right mind will take a person that has been shot to the police station first before the hospital.it's very sad...this is one of the reasons it'll be difficult to make that transition from a 3rd world country to 1st

Why would 5 armed men came to kill just because of a laptop & cell phone if not to kill important information. His official laptop left behind should be well secured by Guardian and Bayo`s family. Mr Onovo and his men should just treat this case as a murder period, ko si alaye. Nigerians demand for the arrest of the murderers and their principals (if any) today!

Then 4 d police p.r.o, he should bury his face in shame, cos d assaillants left enough clues to crack this case ASAP. They hav opportunity 2 make it rubbery look by taking away some other valueables but they didnt cos of their strong backup, maybe even 4rm 'wetin u carry'. And 4 those who masterminded and carried out d act, u shall all end up like Bayo.

the police public relations officer speaking through both ends of his mouth is ridiculous! 'insinuating' armed robbery in the stance of the assailants carting away a laptop and a mobile phone and admitting that publicly is crass unprofessionalism. finally, if he was truly police enough, he should want to know why several people were allowed to touch the wall after such a grave incident as if it was meant to be part of forensics fulfilment. the waves have begun again!

Posted by Ope on Sep 22 2009

He was on to something! My condolences to his wife, may God console her. Where is Nigeria going? It doesn't take rocket science to know that he was assassinated, and they call it armed robbery. Can there not be freedom of press anymore in this country? Must some people out of their selfish reasons take the lives of others? Should other investigative reporters fear for their lives? @ BABS: Please do not allow yourself to be deterred by the naysayers if you indeed have a very good employment or professional opportunity in Nigeria. It is NOT AT ALL EASY to return, but many of us (in fact, scores in recent years) have done it and have not only survived but even thrived. As frustrating (and even dangerous) as this place may be, it is probably your best chance of making a REAL difference (and it does not even have to be a big difference) in real people's lives. Frankly, if we do not all try in some manner to contribute towards making Nigeria a better place, who would?!

The act is barbaric, animalistic and outrightly condem. The Nigeria Police is in needs of total overhauling because within the shortest period when the incident happened, they have concluded that it was a case of armed roberry while the eye witness said that she overheard them when one of them said "The idiot is dead". That statement alone has a lot of meaning. May the Lord protect the family he left behind, Amen.

Posted by Ayodele on Sep 23 2009

It is only in Nigeria that the police exhibit abject incompetence with shameless glee! One minute the police spokes person is screaming murder, the next, armed robbery! Whatever happened to thinking before speaking? And i thought hospitals have been warned against turning away gunshot victims? Or are hospitals unaware of this? If yes, whose job is it to sensitise them? With an incidence like this, will anyone b held responsible for their actions or inactions? Will this case (despite the seeming open and close nature of it) ever be solved? I very much doubt that! After all, it can easily be added to numerous unsolved murders gathering dust on the shelves of negligence.

Posted by tjazzy on Sep 23 2009

It's very easy for everyone to curse the doctors and say they were stupid for not treating the casualty. Many doctors have been beaten up and detained for treating gunshot victims without police reports. How many of you guys have spent a night or two in a police cell before? You should remember that doctors are human beings like you and I.
