Akunyili condemns Hollywood movie on Nigeria

The Minister of Information and Communications, Prof Dora Akunyili has condemned the insults hurled at Nigerians in a Hollywood movie, "District 9."

Mrs. Akunyili, who made the condemnation while addressing the staff of the Nigeria Film Corporation on Monday in Jos, asked Nigerians to resist any attempt to portray them as criminals.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) gathered that ''District 9'', a movie produced by a Hollywood Director, Peter Jackson was shot in South Africa and acted by South Africans.

According to Mrs. Akunyili, Nigerians were depicted in the movie as belonging to a ruthless criminal gang led by a cripple called Obasanjo.

"The film also showed Nigerian ladies indulge in sex with non-humans. It also says Nigerians feed on human parts and that we believe in the powers of ritual and voodoo."

She urged the staff of the corporation to discharge their duties with maximum efficiency to help track such offensive movies.

On the fire that gutted the Gwagwalada office of the Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria on August 31, the minister said government would investigate the cause of the fire to prevent recurrence.

Speaking with newsmen later, Afolabi Adesanya, the director-general of corporation, said the film portrayed Nigerians in bad light.

Mr. Adesanya, who also said that the movie ridiculed the country's immediate past president, advised the Federal Government to lodge a strong protest on the matter through the U.S. Embassy in Nigeria.

It is unnecessary to be combative with everything without first looking at the truthfulness in any message being passed across. It is gross hypocricy for the Minister to pretend as if some of the things in the said film did not is nnot happening in Nigeria. Nigeria will get out of our problems when we admit that a lot of things are wrong. If outsiders could point out the ridiculous level those in government yesterday & today have taken Nigeria to; we should be humble enough to admit it and make amend. The attitude of the Information Minister is the usual way government officials treat very serious issue that should make those in government amend their ways and rule the country well in a civilized manner. I support the call to make Nigeria's displeasure known to the U.S authorities; however, the message contained in the said film must be ruminated upon by those in government. They should stop ruling as if they are ruling animals. They must start governing the nation (Nigeria) in a civilized and conscious manner. Nigerians deserve good life; those in government should STOP STEALING our money; they should spend the money to develop Nigeria.

Yoruba's say: Ti Iya nla ba gbe eni shan ile, kekere a gun ori eni" I have not seen the movie but Mrs Akunyili should be “intelligent” enough to understand that we are already a nation of abysmal self ridicule. A nation with abundant water, sun, oil and gas that cannot generate electricity for its people, a nation where health care is as good as dead, where roads are death traps, where Universities have been closed for months, where bank CEOs are looters and governors are launderers....a nation where nothing works apart from perpetual selfish and reckless greed of the elite few who are hell bent on running the country to the ground. But those are not the most ridiculous things about Nigeria....the most obscenely laughable is reserved for Mrs Akunyili and her “Rebrand Nigeria” cohorts. Who are they fooling?? Definitely not the likes of Peter Jackson and others with basic intelligence who can see through the attempted deceit of an endemically corrupt and inept government. Wake up to reality Mrs Akunyili...this is the beginning. The more you protest, the more Hollywood will dig deep and unearth the atrocities being committed in Nigeria…..and make good commercial movies out of it.

Thank you Dora for standing up for Nigerians even if we refuse to stand up for ourselves. Because of protests like this Sony has apologised and retracted the stupid advert they put out that insults Nigerians. Yes we have our own problems but that gives NOBODY to right to insult or make a mokery of you and I, we are not the reason why Nigeria is the way it is so we should never take these little things for granted. I decided to boycott the movie when I heard of the insult to Nigerians, and I am still insulted when I find my friends spending their money on a film that directly insults you and eventually will publicise you in a negative light. Lets not forget that some pple have neva and will neva meet a Nigerian but guess what they will watch District 9 and will conclude that, that is who we are. Never be afraid to use your voice, thats the GANI spirit

I suppose nigerian we are what we get when we cannot defend ourselves. what percentage of the nigerian populace that gives us all this bad name. help me out. I suppose toyin Ade and otitokoro are the ones depicted by the movie. The truth is we have bad elements but not enuff to describe a people. For Sony Advert what percentage of nigerians have access to the internet to qualify nigerians like that. U guys that criticise nigeria make me wanna puke. But we get what we deserve by not stating the obvious that the problem in the country is caused by less than 5 percent of the population i.e about 5-7million people. I guess a country with a president that rapes HIV person is better than Obj.

In as much as i have not watched the so called film that is sending hot sweat down the spine of government officials particularly Dora Akunyili but we are all witnesses to what Obasanjo did while at the helm of affairs and to him he believed there will be no chronology of his despotic rulership. It is all telling to his face right now. It is not that much has changed with Umaru. We are still suffering, i generate my own electricity, I pump or buy my own water, the roads are dilapidated, nothing seems to be working and corruption is ever endemic. Tell me which sort of re-branding are we selling to the global community when we cannot make things work in our country. Dora is just wasting her time defending what is indefensible. For now Nigeria is bad brand, until we start seeing positive things in this country it will be difficult for us to reposition and sell the brand to the outside world. I seriously pity Dora for this onerous task, let the task not swallow her or dent the hard won image she had carved for herself before taking this brand salesmanship

I have to say, that an approach in this form is really not necessary, the Sony PS3 add was very unprofessional and could take this sort of approach but this was a fictional movie with a strong message on Racism. I saw the movie and the names could easily have been replaced with another country, it is a really good movie, we should pick our wars wisely, and right now we have a strong war on corruption that should be first

"District 9" is a south african film not an hollywood film. please tell madam to understand before seeking to be understood.

Posted by Dr. Ify on Sep 15 2009

@ Charles. Do you read English? District 9 was produced by a Hollywood director and acted in South Africa by South Africans. Prof Dora did not call it a Hollywood film. Thank you Prof Dora for standing up for us. It is true that Nigeria leaders are corrupt etc, but that does not give South Africans the right to depict Nigerians the way they did in district 9. Let me tell you something, despite all the bad things foreign media do to Nigeria less than 10% of South Africans, know much about Nigeria except that it is an oil rich Nation and a country that has produced the likes of Jay Jay Okocha, Peterside Idah, Greg Etafia and Nwankwo Kanu and they will not forget Osaze Odewingie in a hurry. Alongside a string of Nollywood stars. Maybe that is the reason for the "bad belly". Please let nobody misinterpret me. Yes our leaders are corrupt, but over 90% of the populace are etching out an honest living, and looking forward to a better life tomorrow. These Nigerians have a right to be treated fairly. I think that Dora's moaning should not just stop there. Madueke as foreign affairs minister should continue from where she stopped. And also the senate committee on foreign affairs should speak up. We must create a diplomatic furore. In fact, our president should summon the South African Ambassador to explain. Two years ago, I was in a little village in South Africa, nobody treated me like a crook, instead everybody wanted to grant me credit of some sort, from the taxi drivers and the hotels. I don't want to go there next year and meet a hostile people, because some idiot has gone to create a movie like district 9. Really we should not let this one go.

How many Movies have Madam Rebrand funded to tell the Nigeria story of her dreams? Does she think other countries would use their own monies to do PR for Nigeria? How much support has she given Nollywood which is about to die under her watch? What is the total govt. funding for greenlighting films that potrays Nigeria positively? In the absence of your own film SA has funded its own film. Who did you expect to be mada criminals in the film, south africans? Get serious please. Sony would apologise because Nigeria is a huge market to them. The film is making box office hits all over the world with or without Nigeria. Solution, commision your own $30 million dollar film and make south africans the criminals.

Does anyone get the feeling that one day Nigeria will just stop working? Am I the only one thinking this thought. That one day there will be a loud bang, like a tyre blowout, and Nigeria will be on it's back lifeless. Am I the only one thinking this thought. That Nigeria is heaving, bursting at the seams, puffing and panting. One day everything will just go dead. Just my thought.

Can all the branding, re-branding and publicity stunt in the world make a bad product good? Hilary Clinton said and Dora knows that the biggest problem with Nigeria is corruption. The Bible compares what our dear minister, Dora Akunyili is doing to white washing a grave with the bones and all the rotten stuff still intact. Nigerians and indeed international community are not some school kids who you feed junk and want to get away with it. Tom Ikimi did a better job.

it is truly a pity Nigerians dont see how the rest of the world looks at us.I watched a documentary on the NTA [i'm sure they will still have it]on the menace Nigerians have unleashed in south africa, it was so bad that they set-up a task force called 'west' which was solely concerned on stopping the Nigerian drug pushers there. My final say would be ,if it looks like a duck, walks like a duck ,sounds like a duck ,it should certainly be a f@#$%ing duck, they dont paint ghanians or kenyans as ritualists drug pushers prostitutes and conmen.

I love my country. But i hate what we've done to it and to our selves. I do not blame Mr Neil and Peter Jackson for depicting us the way they did. Dont some crazy people in our country kill others for money? And do we value Nigerian life? The US will send a former president to secure the release of its incarcerated citizens while our own leaders hear of Nigerians on deathrow in Libya and do nothing about it. Right now we are treated like the scum of the earth at airports around the world. Though it is unfair to generalise that all Nigerians are like this, the fact is that world dont know and they dont care. All they know is Nigeria and Nigerians are not to be trusted. And that unfair perception will not change as long as things continue the way they are. SO, the rebrand project had better be scrapped and the money used to restore power!

Madam Dora is a shame, no doubt, because she defends only her brand of looters. However, who says because she not eligible to speak on behalf of us, the honest Nigerians, that we should fold our arms and not fight? Are we more decadent than the United States? Within their country, outside their country, they are animals in human skins, as a government. I have a few American friends that are very humane, but a whole lot of them are crazy. Who dares make such a movie about them? Friends and compatriots, let us stand for our own country.

The Nigerians in the film represent a gang of criminals - they are not meant to represent all nigerians - just the gangs that run crime rings in downtown Johannesburg. Nigerian gangsters, money-launderers and drug dealers have been a part of South African - especially joburg - life for a long time - along with chinese gangsters, russians, italians and so on. In other parts of the country South African gangs are strong, but this movie is set in a slum in joburg - so that's why they chose to use a Nigerian gang - because, in real life, these nigerian gangs are powerful in the slums of South Africa. It's only a movie, we're not talking bout the ALL nigerians here, somebody said ealier "...the problem in the country is caused by less than 5 percent of the population i.e about 5-7 million people" - do you realise that is more than the entire population of new zealand?

Regarding District 9, It's actually a rather good film on xenophobia, apartheid, corporations, dehumanization and how we react to the other. Go see it for what it's worth. While you are at it, get a Sony PS3 slim 'cos if you believed all the things our ministers say just like if you believed all the things you read on the internet, " you'll be a nigerian millionaire"!

Posted by Agba Man on Sep 15 2009

Akunyili or your writer got it wrong because the name used was not actually Obasanjo but similar; probably for them to avoid the law courts but OBJ should seek legal advice as soon as possible. OBJ is not lame so they will argue that they were not referring to him. So, Nollywood should do a film on US and call a character Igbe aka Bush to see how they would like it. Awon olosi! It is expensive sh*t aka Igbe Oyinbo

Posted by Mallam on Sep 15 2009

Is it OK for Nollywood to depict Nigerians as 419ers, armed robbers and cult and juju practitioners but not OK for Hollywood to do the same? It is how we have depicted ourselves in our movies and most unfortunately in reality. OUCH!! I know it hurts.

I bet a lot of people don't know what the Italian Mafia is all about. That is the greatest cartel of "the power that be" with global presence. Origin is in Sicily. I have lost count of the various Box office Mafian movies shot in Hollywood. A good reminder is the Mario Puzzo's Last Don, A pacino's Godfather; Robert Deniro's "Casino" and "Goodfellas"and never did anyone get an outburst from any Italian about the manner in which the Mafia is always being portrayed. In fact Italian classy restaurants and mouth watering delicacies are craved for all over the world. Why the sudden outburst by Mrs Rebranding and a couple of other "Holy Michaels". Tell this character depiction protest about an foreign movie to a Niger Deltan and see his response (I can only hope you don't lose ur life after). Brothers and Sisters, I don't dispute the fact that not every Nigerian has the key to the CBN vault but why do animal husbandry proffessionals separate a sick bird from the flock? It takes less than an hour to infect the rest of the birds with the ailment and much less than a week to cause an epidemic. I believe my message is clear. Maybe Nigerians don't even know there is a bigger movie than "District 9" which no one needs to pay to see how wayward and politically backward Nigeria and Nigerians are. I don't know who pays to hear that 15 from 22 players that Nigeria paraded for the upcoming under-17 soccer mundial are all married with kids??? No thanks to the FIFA introduced MRI test. What with the age recorded for Obafemi Martins on the NFA website that contrasts sharply with the age verification documents submitted by the player himself where is plays his football? Who needs to pay to watch Alhamieysghia with a portmanteau of pound sterling in his car trunk??? Do people need to pay to read news of gun running venture embarked upon by our prominent Nigerians big wigs in the name freedom fight??? Have you guys even ever taken out time to watch documentaries on the Niger Delta on CNN??? Maybe u all don't know that CNN maintains the largest outreach globally... Madam Rebranding... it's obvious there's still work to do. If you must hit back at South Africa, simply shoot a Nigeria motion depicting Southern Africans in their real HIV infested and criminally minded existence (afterall, they recorded the highest occurrence of criminal cases world wide). Remember the marketing strategies to ensure they go beyond the shores of this country if pirates don't lay hands on it; the cast has to be of international standard to command wide demand (provided there won't be a generator noise at the background disrupting the sound quality of the production), and let's hope Power Holding will be graceful enough to make the average feel a respite having watched the Nigerians take out their own pound of flesh from the Southern Africans, and so on and so forth. Maybe I should have started by asking why there was no outburst on "Lost"? Was the Minister in charge then asleep??? Let's call a spade a spade ladies and gentlemen.

I can feel Mrs Akinyuli pain as i have watched the said movie but i don't agree with her actions regarding the portraying of Nigerians as scammers as that is the truth, Nigerians are indeed scammers. Mrs. Akinyuli has clearly strayed from her days as NAFDAC Director, that's what you get when you put a round peg in a square hole. Mrs, Akinyuli should realize that in order for change to occur in Nigeria it has to start from the Leadership. We should stop talking about fighting corruption and do something about it

...Has anyone cared to ask if Nigerians don't play worse roles than what were depicted in the "District 9" hit in their own Movies??? Who has seen the Godfathers??? Or the hit Jennifer??? Bunch of money ritualists and political pilferers holding the populace to ransom without the fear of the Almighty??? Or you think these crazy works (which have scaled the weak and lifeless censorship and regulatoy framework that exists in Nigeria) don't get out there??? American do proper research before they come with movies and I bet they must have drawn confidence from the host of silly productions I earlier reffered to before staging such movie as "District 9". An ardent Home videos follower will bear me witness except everyone wants to be like the characters being depicted.

Well said, we associated the Italian's with Mafia movies, Middle eastern men with terrorism, Jews with being tight fisted, Jamaican as drug dealers, and the list goes on, There is absolutely NOTHING wrong branding Nigerians as scammers, I happen to be a NIGERIAN, that lives in London, and there isn't much to write about, Infact I wonder why it took so long to make a movie about the advance letter scam. Lets be realistic, you reap what you sow. We have allowed ourselves to be talked about in a Negative way, I do not believe it was dreamt up by the director of the movie, obviously the movie, is not the exact description of the average nigerian, but lets be HONEST shouldn't a movie about scammers be about Nigerians? You do not have to answer the question, They say charity begins at home, lets put our house in order.

With Akingbola of Intercontinental Bank on the run from the law for alleged fraudulent financial dealings and while the good Christian, God-fearing Ibrus have resorted to invoking the wrath of the spirit of Olomo on the CBN Governor, to the newspaper headline about a dead body found, eyes gouged out and tongue removed by suspected ritualists or even a taxi passenger caught with a newly severed head in a plastic bag (to be used for money-making rituals), need we any movie? It is happening in reality and the real life movie/movies unfold everyday in our society. Madam Minister, that is where your rebranding Nigeria should start from, because when you rebuke the film makers, they will have enough evidence from our everday newspapers, Nollywood movies and indeed everyday life to prove to you that their potrayal of Nigerians and Nigeria is indeed accurate.

First and foremost...to everyone who thinks DISTRICT 9 speaks the truth about the whole of Nigeria, i say SHUT THE HELL UP!!! A white South African writes and directs a movie about aliens and portrays Nigerians in the worst way ever displayed on TV in the history of television and yet we have nigerians coming here to open your mouths to say we caused it.Kindly think outside the box. It is because our leaders past never spoke out on our bad national portrayal by these movie studios that they actually felt better compelled to do a movie like this. Do you know that Mr Peter Jackson was the director of the LORD OF THE RINGS trilogy. When he was making those movies he spent years researching fictional characters. But now faced with the nature of real Nigerians he is quick to produce a movie with absolutely no research done at all. It only takes for you to watch it to see it is extremely far from the fictional truth it tries to express. I was so enraged by this movie i started a group on faceboo.com called " NIGERIANS AGAINST HOLLYWOOD'S BAD PORTRAYAL" In less than 1 week we have gather over 195 members and counting. Doesnt that proove that not only are we appalled at the depiction, we outrightly condem it.I implore you all to join and add your voice to this attrocity. Director Niell Blomkamp owes us an indepth level of apology for his sacriligious portrayal of Nigerian. We are the gun runing, alien flesh eating, scammers and even inter species prostitutes?RUBBISH!!Nigerians in South Africa are the most hit in this regard. He failed to mention the fact that crime rate, racism, HIV /AIDS, rape and general discrimination in south africa are higher than that of nigeria KUDOS madam minister for standing up for what is right!!! Even if we choose not to be proud for ourselves we can at least be proud Nigerians for our children and future generation's sake. In as much as we havee bad elements amongst the populace, they are but a fraction compared to the hard working , legitimate money earning nigerian so why should the negatives be made to outshine the positives...and by a NON-NIGERIAN non the less. We are truly sick and tired of outsiders making us look negative when in reality we have more positivity than they are willing credit us with. If we dont speak for ourselves..who the hell will??????? if you have comments and positive criticisms please send to my email: ezufeboke@gmail.com. NIGERIA...GOOD PEOPLE GREAT NATION!!!

Anybody who feels we should not protest the portrayal of Nigerians in 'District 9' needs to sit down and do a sober reflection on what's 'real' and what's not. Are we more rotten than South Africans or Americans? Even if the percentage of bad Nigerians surpasses the population of some countries, so bloody what?! Is it our fault that those countries are like some Nigerian local government areas in terms of population? What we need to realise is this: Regardless of what our problems are (and yes they are many, we know!) nobody has the right to depict us as criminals! And though I'm generally sorry for Dora and her rebranding project, I'm in total support of Nigeria - Good People, in the hope that some day well achieve the Great Nation part.

I agree with Toyin Ade in the sense that the rulers of the country and anybody who comes close to authority regards every other Nigerian who is not rich with contempt. The message in that film was very metaphorical. The cripple there is really crippled and the citizens are really cannibals if you look around you and rituals and foolish belief in vodoo are everywhere. Nonetheless, it is not Akunyili's fault. She is bringing the same zeal she applied at NAFDAC to the information ministry and in this stance she talked of rebranding. Projecting negative image about ones self to the outsider does not solve problems as it only goes a long way to block opportunities. All the same, the leaders and the citizenry need to have a rethink and get things right.

@Otitokoro: Sir, I understand your point but do not be deceived into thinking that America was not worse in the 80s than Nigeria. They are not more intelligent as you think. We were once questioning certificates from there. If they were better, why are they carrying guns? Do not misunderstand me to mean that the act of carrying guns is wrong what I mean is why must they have to protect themselves against each other? Your comment betrays some racial inferiority complex which is still one of the problems of our leaders.

The people like Dora are doing bad job for Nigeria. The film in question fictional. Some countries have identifiable traits associated to them. Like some commentators have said. But what you find with those countries is the good things going for them. Jamaica (drug pusher) is now associated with athletics, Italian good food, in our case case we started with oil, to football, to drug, 419, looters, corruption, kidnappers etc. Dora job is to clean the house before inviting outsiders. Then if any outsiders are depicting us badly, we can invite them and show them what we are. The fact is if a father is corrupt, the children are corrupt as well. DORA CLEAN THE STABLE, AND I WILL FOLLOW YOU TO CLEAN NIGERIA.

The depiction of nigerians in district 9 is no better than how we depict ourselves in our home videos.if u r worried about the depiction, blame Nollywood and not Hollywood.i agree with movie on every level.it is d way we are.

I do believe that We Nigerians have our own problems like other nations on Earth, but no body has the right to portray any nation in a negative way. Not even the likes of Peter Jackson and Opharah like she did in her talk show or what ever they call themselves. Let think of it, did they overlook what is happening in their own country to have time to portray Nigeria in the way they did in that movie. I do not want to join issue by name calling neither should I fold my hand or keep quite and watch these elemnts portray My country Nigeria in a such disparage way. And those of you who are in support of this movie because of few disgruntle elements in Nigeria should desists and stand up for what is the truth and not stood so low afterall east or west home is still the best. On the the hand I will give kudos to Dr. Dora on the tough job she involves in. But in her struggle to rebrand Nigeria she should be reminded that is those at the helm of the government should be rebranded first. It does not make sense to open a newpaper with the headline of politician being charge to court for corruption or money laundering. Is the rat at home that invites the ouside rat into the house for distress. Afterall charity begins at home,If they rebrand themselves Nigerian cizitens will not be in this situation we are in now. I am proud a Nigeria and will defend it at all costs. God bless all good loving cizitens of the world. Let us not do things that will dehumanize our human fellows because we think that we are better than them, but let us respect one another with human dignity

It is sad to see that some Nigerians have lost so much confidence in our identity that they are happy to be portrayed, albeit fictionally, as cannibals, scammers and cross-species prostitutes. The highest number of credit card and other financial scams around the world are committed by Americans and Britons. Nick Leeson and the recently jailed ponzi scheme American come readily to mind. Americans carry arms to defend themselves from......yes - one another!! What does that tell you about their nature??? Everyday, we read about paedophilic killers in America and Britain. Only the other day, we heard about the German national who imprisoned and impregnated his own daughter severally over a period of years.... Point is, you don't see any Nigerian movies trying to portray these nationalities in any of the negative lights that are innumerably available to us. You don't even see our media referring to them in anything but a positive light. To those who keep using Hollywood's portrayal of Italians and Italian-Americans as mafiosi figures as justification for this sub-human portrayal of Nigerians by former racists, let me remind you that in each of those movies, the mafiosi lifestyle was glamourised and celebrated....heck, the Godfather franchise got to 3, didn't it? How do you glamourise cannibalism??? How?? The Nigerians portrayed in District 9 are not mirror images of myself or any member of my family. Based on Chinedubond's submission, I would hesitate to visit his village, since his politicians routinely murder and drink human blood or bugger others for power. The glorifiers of the movie should please speak for themselves, while Mrs. Akunyili should continue to speak for those of us Nigerians that still have a shred of dignity and humanity left in us. I recommend you go a step further, Madam Minister, and order the Film Censor's Board, which I believe to be under your ministry, to de-certify the movie immediately and yank it from ALL Nigerian cinemas. Further, any bootleg movie vendor found peddling it on the streets should be given the maximum available sentence for the offence.

(By Google Translate) :: I can sympathise with Madam Re-Brand. As an alien from another galaxy, I too am disappointed by the fact that we aliens are persistently portrayed so negatively in your earth movies: abductions, destruction, and forceful experimentation and impregnations. These[actions] are performed only by a few aliens and do not represent the actions of the majority of time-travelling, dimension-dodging, aliens (like myself) that have visited your planet peacefully and made it our home. Nigeria - we share your pain!

If a movie was done about the USA as drug users, Gun carrying rednecks, I doubt the U.S.A ll even acknowledge it, as it is not the reflection of the average American. The fact that our government is making a big deal about it, speaks volume. Maybe we need a bit (infact A LOT ) of soul searching. I have watched a lot of movie about the Italian Mobs, American gangsters, Mexican drug dealers, and I cant remember tantrums throwing, I am guessing a movie about the "Incompetent president" ll also be an insult to Nigerians... I have a simple solution to this, NO GOVERNMENT OFFICIAL SHOULD SEND THERE KIDS TO THE U.S for their education, buy American products, or go to the U.S for Medical treatment, essentially BOYCOTT america. We all know these idiots we call leaders cant do that. LETS PUT OUR SO CALLED LEADERS TO THE TEST, ALSO EVERYONE SUPPORTING DORA, SHOULD NOT APPLY FOR AMERICAN VISA.... DEAL??

Ok now that Mrs Akunyili has gone and brought up District 9 (someone must have simply called her on the phone to complain) which is a low budget indie film which suddenly hit the limelight is she ready to deal with all the other more important issues such as the bad image the likes of James Ibori, Maurice Iwu, Tony Anenih, Peter Odili are inflicting on us in more mainstream media? How many people are really going to sit through District 9. The mInisters reaction shows the level of immaturity and thickness of peole who run Nigeria. Does the Italian, Japanese, Mexican,Jamaican, Russian Government take up anyone that produces a gangster movie? Please lets grow up.

I thought we had a Govt that is busy with the duties of making the country a good one. Little did I know that a Minister can leave all she has to begin watching movies. Besides, even if the so called movie paints a dirty picture of the country, can de deny that such did not happen or is not happening in our country? The lessons of the movie should be taken and not to start looking for who to fight. OUR HONOURABLE MINISTER gave our country her utmost service when she was in the health sector, i .e NAFDAC. Now, she has little or nothing doing in the Govt House which gives her the time to notice and discuss frivolities issues and attend every OWAMBE PARTY in town.

@ ZTX#192793 LMAO! I'm sure all the earnest people on here will miss the subtlety of your (non-human) humour. Nice one!

I wonder why Mrs Dora is complaining about the film produced in South African that portray the dirtiness and greedy attitude of our so called LEADERS.If we refused to clean up our mess by ourselves who will? South African? No.Mrs.Dora Re-branding crusade is a means of wasting and stealing Nigerians Money. 7-point agenda of Mr.President is an unrealistic agenda for The Nigerian but realistic agenda for Mr president and his cabinet to enriches their pocket and amass wealth for themselves.Where is Operation Feed The Nation,Better life programm e.t.c.thanks

What is the essence of the media, or do you think it is one of those deaf & dumb t.V , newspapers, film & music industries? If you have forgotton, freedom of speach is the only thing that can bring about effective democracy. Literature is just an imitation of real life.

I read a Malawi paper called Ngaya times on-line and I happened on the news about Akunyili banning District 9. Apparently it had a Malawian Actor playing a major part ( I believe as "Obasanjo") the comments were quite disturbing. Lots of malawians felt Nigeria was an embarrasment to the African continent. Its not just our Government its the internet fraudsters, the niger delta and south eastern kidnappers, the ritual movies. Look while every Country has vices, its too prominent in Nigeria. Being a Nigerian living abroad I've realize that a lot of Nigerians don't know that they are all ambassadors of our Country wether you live abroad or not. Very often I've had to do better, dress better, act more honestly than a person from most other countries just because I'm Nigerian at least in order to correct the wrong impression that comes with being Nigeria. And more often than not people come away with a better impression of the Country. Please people make we try!

Oh my God! Are Nigerians so down that they believe they deserve every trash? Those who believe the movie is not in bad taste really need to have themselves examined. The problem of Nigeria is not her government but her people; how can anyone help people who believe they deserve every derogatory treatment? How can one million Akinyulis help people who cannot see anything good in themselves? Does anyone of you remember that Obasanjo PAID Nigeria's debt? Does anyone remember that he opened communication to the outside world? Is anyone aware of the insurgence of foreign investors during his tenure? How can a true Nigerian feel inferior to Malawi for God's sake? I believe the writer of that piece is a Malawian seeking refuge in ever hospitable Nigeria. What can those who have jumped the boat, abandoned Nigeria to clean trash and corpses 'abroad' contribute to national matters? A president, any president, is just ONE person. What is the behaviour of the average Nigerian? Is the president the drug pusher? Is the president the internet fraudster? Is the president the staff in all ministries, corporations and parastatals? Is the president the trader who cheats customers? Start re-branding Nigeria from your own corner. Madam Minister, I thank God for giving Nigeria people like you. I salute you. God bless you and your generations to come. The good Lord will uphold you. Your name is already written in gold and no one can remove it. Thank you ma!
