Babangida reacts to Gani’s death

Print print Email email Share Share

Former Nigerian military ruler, Ibrahim Babangida, whose government regularly detained Gani Fawehinmi, spoke with reporters today on the lawyer’s death, at his Hilltop home in Minna.

My sympathy

While I sympathise with his family and loved ones, I will continue to pray to God for the repose of his soul. He was a great source of social engineering in Nigeria. There will be no development if there is no social engineering. I admired his criticism. He always tried to back them up with facts and laws.

My presidency

When we want to take decisions while I was head of state, we always took cognisance of what Gani might do. Because he would tear it to pieces and charge up the people against us.

Fearless

I attended one meeting in 1984 when I was chief of staff, and we invited Gani. He said it the way it was. We were all in army uniform, but Gani blasted us, and we ended up clapping for him. Because he was quite fearless. He said it the way it is.

“I am not relieved”

We had our differences. We went to the Supreme Court several times, and I was always winning. His death is not a relief for me at all.

Immortality

Yes. I would have immortalised Gani if I was in office as president when he died.

I hope my countrymen and women will now learn a big lesson from Gani`s death. Gani was not listened to while alive, especially by the govenrnment officials that maltrated him for fighting for justice, now they are singing his praises. As one of Yoruba adages puts it: "Eniyan o dara laaye igba a ba ku landere"

Tell Babaginda that he's still the best head of state we ever had.....

Posted by Omo Alhaja on Sep 05 2009

General Babangida, Sir. Very well said, as usual. However, the record of what the military, especially your administration, did with Gani's advice, doesn't quite tally with your sugar-coated verbiage. I hope you will get to read the genuine outpouring of condolence and praise for Gani that is represented in the most copious commentary on a single individual that I have ever read in Next. Only the CBN Governor comes close, which should tell an intelligent man like you quite a lot. I have no doubt that even with the power of life and death you once wielded in this country, you would wish that your inevitable departure would rate even 1% of what Gani is now getting from the ordinary people of this country.

Posted by Sanya on Sep 05 2009

Babangida's views on Gani have always been consistent. That's because Babangida himself is a great leader. Well he made his mistakes like any other human. Many Nigerians who criticise their leaders would do worse given the same opportunity that the leader had.

In these days of very selfish leaders, Gani was truly one of the selfless heroes we had in Nigeria. He truly fought for the masses. It is amusing that Babangida in whose hands he suffered confesses to his admiration for Gani.

Posted by Rommel on Sep 05 2009

I don't quite understand why IBB thinks that he is a sharp man,I thought he IBB was civilized but looking back at his 8yrs of rule,it seems to me most strange that Babangida could still raise his head considering the state of affairs we have found ourselves because of people like him.Gani was bigger than all of you past military leaders put together. His name will outlive all of you whilst IBB (the man that made Nigeria to sin) will also remembered for his own deeds.Oneday, the descendants of people like you IBB and OBJ will be too ashamed to be associated with you,I gurantee you this.Shame on you, long live Nigeria,Gani we will miss you, rest in peace, you did yout bit.

Why is that we Nigerians only appreciates people's effort after death . Can't we learn from the mistakes of the past. Now GANI is being eulogized as a Good and fearless man after his death . Mr IBB and OBJ what will the people of Nigeria and the World say about you after your demise . Remember for every event in life , history is certain to be recorded . We should all strive to leave behind a legacy that can be emulated by our unborn generations. Adieu GANI, you will be remembered for your struggle for humanity. You have done your best . May your soul which you have used undauntedly for the betterment of the masses now rest in perfect peace. The big question we should all ask ourselves now is 'CAN WE EVER AND EVER HAVE ANOTHER GANI WHO HAVE REFUSED TO BE BOUGHT OVER' . LETS ALL THINK TWICE AND JOIN HANDS TOGETHER AND MOVE NIGERIA FORWARD .

With the death of Gani the nation has lost a true patriot. It is difficult to describe Gani. He was honest, fortright, disciplined, fearless, and resolute. But above all, he was a die-hard Nigerian even though her leaders treated him with insults and incarceration. It will be difficult to find another Gani. The human rights community will sorely miss him. May God rest your noble soul, Gani. Your persecutors can no longer hound you - after all, there is no Kiri-Kiri or Kuje in heaven.

It is the likes of Obasanjo and Babaginda that killed Gani with their tear gas; He fought all his life for the restoration of true democracy in Nigeria. He saw a vision of Nigeria where everyone would afford the basic necessity of life, where everyone will all be equal before the Law. One then wonders if Nigeria really what fighting for. Babaginda should just keep his mouth shut! Rest in Peace Chief

Both Gani and IBB are great leaders of this country in their own rights. IBB made the most significant impact on the lives of Nigerians who lived while he was ruling. Gani on the other hand apealed to the intellectuals and helped to put the governments in to perspective. "Be careful oh! everyone in the country is not a fool" However I can't remember my mother at home knowing who Gani was and what he represented. But IBB is mentioned by even children, literate and illiterate Nigerian. Good bye uncle Gani. Wishing joyful awakening to joyful activity in the beyond. Please only fight for what will direct your gaze to the longed for goal - getting back to paradise as a conscious being to the glory of HE who gives life. We who call ourselves literate will miss you. I can't talk for the others. Adieu Gani. Please dont accept any RIP wish, for man does not die, and only a soul that rests is dead. Joyful activity is inherent in every living soul.

He is known world wide as a person who fought for justice and freedom, who gave generously to the needy and spoke the truth no matter how bitter. Gani came and made himself relevant in the lives of the common people. He has gone to the great beyond and left us to continue the struggles. Are there people who can read between the lines on this forum? That the views of IBB were made public about Gani's death was to do one of many things. One was to provoke Nigerians to take action and not allow those who do not wish Nigeria well to dance on the grave of Gani the brave. I hope OBJ too will say something about Gani. The question is how to replenish the stock of fighters for the people. I mean those who did not use the struggle to seek for political posts. Not those who want to be governors and members of house of rep but people like Beko Kuti who died fighting, Tai Solarin who showed the way at all times, Bala Usman, who was man enough to speak up when others kept quiet......

The most crucial and critical aspects of these stories is the surprises you bagged about life when mostly the desired ones that dies young and the most wicked ones becomes inmortal, sometimes this might make one has the doubt if the God we called upon is the same one or just a partial type.Inever had rhe intentions of offending most believers in this forum, but i had the impression that the Yoruba race and poor as a whole is becoming more or less Orphan.First it was Pa Obafemi Awolowo, then Chier M.K.O and now Gani fawehinmi, this made me recalled on one of Gov.Fashola's speech very recently and i quote"That his generation was brought up with the dictatorship, coup and counter coup and more or else with horse whip",yhps i would rather say it's the same in my generation too.By and large what is 71years old to just have abandonned life like that and whereas some wicked souls lives to clock 90 and more.May his humble souls rests in perfect peace and console the family he left behinde.

THE BEST HONOUR WE CAN GIVE GANI The REAL tribute we can ever pay to Gani Fawehinmi is to speak out against injustice in Nigeria. For example, we must vehemently resist Sanusi's current attempt to steal the five banks from their rightful owners and hand them over to his Fulani people. If the rights of the rich could be so brazenly violated, then the poor have no hope in Nigeria. The Yar'Adua government is the most dangerous in the history of Nigeria as it's pursuing a secret agenda to foster Fulani Supremacy in our land. Hence, the time has come for Nigerians to stand up for their birthright and resist this fascist regime.

Gani , throughout his life as never used illegal means to achieve his aim, as described by Roscoe Pound that law should be a means of social engineering ,Gani as used the legal system to air out his grievance against the ruling autocratic cabal of his days like IBB. IBB you and Abacha should be held responsible for Gani,s death because it was the constant arrest which u evil men ordered that caused his cancer ailment.

Posted by Ayo Onatola, Luton England on Sep 06 2009

IBB should have realised that he cannot re-write history. Gani was famous despite not been in government. he was a legal icon, distinguished pro-democracy activist, renowned social crusader and the most revered friend of the Nigerian students and oppressed masses. It was on record that Gani had the highest number of detentions during IBB saga. When IBB was tactically schemed out of office, one of his notable remarks was that "Gani Fawehinmi was the most respected Nigerian critic and human right activist". At Gani's death again, despite all the antecedents of the 8-year maradonic rule of IBB which contributed to worsening of the state of health of Gani, it will be deceitful for IBB to try to play God to be a lover of Gani. Gani stood for human rights protection to the core. Gani was an unrepentant advocate for the emancipation and better living of the Nigerian masses.IBB is a hater of those qualities and he needs to be told of the non-relevance of his maradonic style as there is no field for any match he might be contemplating to be played against Nigerians. Gani, may your soul rest in perfect peace yet may your oppressors never know peace until Nigerian masses are loosened of the shackles on their necks.

Life surprises me and those of you with deep knowledge of life should assist my shallow understanding of life. IBB, I am told, still wants to rule Nigeria. The three men, MKO, Beko and Gani who could make it impossible for him are all dead. I am not sure Professor Wole Soyinka alone can stop IBB from becoming the next president of Nigeria if IBB chooses. Please keep this contribution somewhere should IBB win the elections and we the Nigerian people become slaves of the Minna Prince of the Niger once again. I am ready to live as a slave under IBB for another 8 years but I cannot predict what my actions will be should IBB win an election in Nigeria. What do you good people think? Why do the good ones die while those who plan to lord over us remain. I would not have minded IBB if he truly wants to transform Nigeria but from all indications he just wants better life for his children and the Queen while the rest of us enjoy the bitter life for rural dwellers. WHY, why? Why are we so blessed?

Dont just rejoice, if justice is not obtained here, definitely God will provide an equitable judgement.Gani stood for social justice. According to our mentor Karl Marx and i quote" the history of all hitherto existing society is that of class struggle and class is determined according to ownership of means of production". it is this same class struggle that he fought all his life. we will all remember him. so Babangida, dont rejoice, its not over until its over. just pray that you will not be disgraced before your death.

The message is clear, there is nothing that has a beginning that does not have an end. Gani left behind a good name which speaks volume, even in his absence. Thoase who hate him for his frankness cannot deny this in their subconscious neither can they speak ill of him in the open. How I wish our leaders can seat back and reflect as to what happens to their name if tomorrow they leave this world. Search your conscience. His death is more of a proverb which says 'life is transient'. Those who are running after worldly things, viz: rigging elections, killing and maiming innocent souls in order to occupy an elective post should seat back and think.

IBB has once again shown the stuff he's made of by his rather sinister comments.on the glorious home call of a wonderful and very upright Nigerian hero. All Maradona needed to tell the whole world is the untainted fact that the great Chief Gani Fawehinmi remained the only Nigerian he couldn't bribe "settle"or rubbish despite all his evil genius .At least all Ondo indigenes should be proud that Chief Fawehinmi was born in their midst and he resisted eating the vomit and excreta of the evil genius, unlike his fellow Ondo man(popularly known as Aleco) who even at 70yrs old revels eating puke and shit from the Minna based evil genius at every available opportunity. It's now time for all EGIN'S to unsure a befitting funeral for the ICON and they should be reassured that all well meaning people all over the world share the grief of their loss.IBB has once more refused saying the whole truth .We remember his repeated INSHA ALLAH statementS.What manner of man will have the temerity to call the name of Allah in vain knowing that he was not saying the truth.Of course God is very patient but no one can escape his judgement no matter how rich and well connected. We all await his final judgement ADIEU Chief Abdulganiyu Oyesola Fawehinmi. You lived and died for the masses of Nigerians and we will never forget you.

He was also friendly, and no matter what he felt, he always wore a smile that said, 'we have to overcome all situations through the law" Gani had been instrumental in pesuading me to put aside my appointment as a High Court Judge in Ogun State, to go and work with him as Senior Advisor to The Concord Press of Nigeria Inc. then. Gani had assured me of his tsupportand he had been there all the time with me teaching me Press law. I was lucky to see him as he presented his cases to Court.Gani allways had a case to butress his point and never saw his opponents in Court battles as enemies. Never forget that Gani was very Civil to women and knowing him once made him a friend for life. A perfect gentleman when dealing with the opposite sex. May his soul rest in peace and may he meet and laugh with Dele Giwa as I used to see them share jokes whenever we were together. I am proud of the life he exhibited,he had richmen as his friends but he never failed fighting for the poor. He treasured freedom of the individual.
