Print print Email email Share Share

Ganiyu Oyesola Fawehinmi, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria and former presidential aspirant, who will be remembered by many for his vehement opposition to Nigeria’s oppressive military regimes, is dead. He died at 71. The human rights activist and lawyer passed away in the early hours of September 5, 2009 after a two-year battle with lung cancer.

Mr. Fawehinmi, popularly called Gani, was born on April 22, 1938, in Ondo State. His father, Saheed Tugbobo Fawehinmi, the Seriki Musulumi of Ondo, was a successful timber magnate, a great philanthropist, an opponent of excessive taxation of the poor and a deeply religious muslim leader. He was reported to have brought Islam to Ondo Town.

Mr. Fawehinmi had his early education at Ansar-Ud-Deen Primary School, Iyemaja, Ondo from 1947 to 1953 and he attended Victory College, Ikare, a christian secondary school from 1954 to 1958.

In 1961, Mr. Fawehinmi enrolled at the Holborn College of Law, University of London. While in college, he was popularly known as “Nation” because of his passionate interest in national, legal and political affairs.

In 1993, Fawehinmi was awarded the biennial Bruno Kreisky Prize. This prize, named in honour of Bruno Kreisky, is awarded to international figures who advance human rights causes. As a result of his activism, Mr. Fawehinmi was arrested, detained, and charged to court several times by government officials. Many Nigerians called him ‘the people’s president’.

Details about Mr. Fawehinmi’s funeral have not been announced but the activist had said that his burial should not be rushed, and that his family should consult with the National Bar Association to arrange a befitting burial.

The demise of a firebrand Nigerian. Gani Fawehinmi fought for the enthronement of an egaliterian Nigeria. We have lost one of Nigeria's greates heros. It is bad enough that Nigeria lacks heros, but it is worse that we are in dire need of heros. It is sad that the ranks of this group of rare Nigerians has been depleted. The death of Gani is indeed, a great loss to Nigeria. Painfully, there is no replacement. Adieu, Gani. Wither Nigeria

Posted by Isiaka on Sep 05 2009

Gani, Fulanis and good governance in Nigeria Gani was a honest and dedicated fighter for humanity. However, he didn't actually understand where the shoe pinches Nigeria. His focus on using the courts to fight for good governance failed because it didn’t address the roots of the system. The problem of the country is fundamentally the problem of Fulani's claim to the monopoly of power in Nigeria. Religious riots in the North, political instability, the impoverishment of our people and the current bank crisis are the fallouts of the Fulani supremacist claims. Until Nigerians confront the Fulani establishment and wrest the political control of the country from them, we shall know no peace or progress. May the soul of Chief Gani Fawehinmi rests in peace.

Gani Fawehinmi was a relentless fighter for justice, a bold spirit, and without doubt one of Africa's greatest lawyers. I am proud to have been associated with him professionally. My LLB thesis was dedicated to him, and I had the privilege of doing my Law School attachment under his mentorship. He encouraged me in my legal career, and gave me fatherly advice and book gifts. My heart goes out to his loving family. The struggle must go on!

So long comrade! You have done your best and left your unmatchable footprints on sands of time.Once again the camp of the voiceless and progresives has been depleted. It is good for you to make your mark positively before your depature.Gani stood for the defenceless, he fought the governmnet both military and civilian. He is reputed to have entered the guiness book of record as the person with highest number of suites against the government and the oppressed. We shall all remember you, great comrade.

The passing away of Gani marks the end of an era.The need for this generation to wake up and take responsibility for the challenges faceing this nation is now ever cleare.Gani and his contemporaries have made their contributions now its our turn. Can somebody tell me why during the military era it would have taken less than the atrocities our political leaders are perpetuating today to bring everyone out on the streets & yet under a democratic regime we seem to be begging our leaders to oppress us the more.If we continue like this there will be nothing left for the next generation....I HOPE WE DONT LET THE ENDEAVOUR OF GANI AND HIS CONTEMPORARIES GO TO WASTE.

I thank God all the same for the life you lived and the life you helped the oppressed to get through your struggles. Rest in peace Baba Gani, you were indeed a man that stood for the conscience of the people. You spoke the truth even with the guns of the military and other corrupt Nigerian rulers and Dictators pointing at you. Its left for us to take up the charge you started and take Nigeria to the place its supposed to be; a Nation built on the values of ethics, faith and the dignity of labour. RIP Papa!!

Posted by Adepoju Oluwaseun on Sep 05 2009

Nigeria has lost one of her greatest children. he was the voice of the voiceless. Today, we mourn him while remembering all he did during his lifetime. However, as we pour out our hearts, we should also have a rethink of ourselves. What will people say about you when you are dead and gone. Did u speak the truth as at when due? Did u contribute the growth of this country? Did u support good over bad?Due u follow due process or used ur godfather do get what u want?did u bribe ur way thru school settling lecturers?did ur brains get u ur present job? What impact did this great man have on u as a person?

I'm so beaten up by the harshness and the cold reality this sombre news came with. What a personage we'd have needed profoundly at a time like this in Nigeria and the world at large. I can't help but go hysterical, it's quite unfortunate and untoward, how is it that you had to take a bow now that your voice is needed even louder than ever before? How is it? Well, I thank God all the same for the life you lived and the life you helped the oppressed to get through your struggles. You may have gone to answer a higher divine calling, but your legacies and the trails you blazed will keep speaking volumes. Sleep on brother, God doesn't make mistakes.

There goes one Nigerian who was passionate about his country. He was passionate and yet with no guile. He was dainty in looks and noble in character. He was a gem in ways that the stones that answer such adjectives cannot understand. He was a flower to his friends and a thorn in the flesh of his enemies. He fought for justice with a vitriolic candour and stared the darkness of poverty and injustice with the luminescence of of a towering Collosus. In him was no fear and death knows that he could not have claimed him except that it is the way of all mortals. A chip off the conscience of Nigeria - we must all regraft that piece by living for the ideals for which he lived and the truth for which he died. Adieu my lawyer, my brother, my fellow compatriot, my friend...the leading light of justice will follow and clear you for entry into greater bliss. Adieu Uncle! Rest in indescribable peace!

GANI CAN NO LONGER ARTICULATE AND VOICE WHAT WE ALL GRUMBLE ABOUT AT HOME. IT IS HIGH TIME WE ALL STARTED RESISTING EVIL, CORROSIVE CORRUPTION, GROSS INEFFICIENCY, AND IMPUNITY, IN ALL THEIR MANIFESTATIONS -- WHICH MEANS EVERYWHERE. GOOD NIGHT, GANI.

Posted by Rasheed Ahmed on Sep 05 2009

Ina lilai wai inali lai rajiun - We belong to you and to you we shall all return. It is inevitable. We cannot avoid death. Death will come when it will come. Our dearest Gani, we salute you, we salute your courage, the champion of the oppressed. We love you, but your creator loves you more. The jihad you waged by words and by action, in fighting the government and agents of oppression, for the enthronement of good governance and human rights for the oppressed people of Nigeria, will forever remain indelible in our minds. We will never forget you. Our dear Gani Fawehinmi, you are only comparable (in terms of your principled fight for the emancipation of your people from the cruel hands of social injustice, human rights abuse and maladministration by the ruling class), to the late Edward Ted Kennedy, the lion of the US Senate who died last month. You fought the cause of the downtrodden; you fought nepotism, fought greed and avarice to the very end of your life. Even though, you may be gone, let no one named Farida Waziri heave a sigh of relief, because the case you instituted against her will now be dispensed with. Let no one named Mike Andoakaa , the biggest fraud masquerading as attorney general of the Federation, (the one who is supposed to be fighting on the side of justice on behalf of the people, but chose to pitch tent with the oppressors) have the illusion that with the passing of the greatest Senior Advocate of the Masses (SAM), his many ills will not be public knowledge anymore. Let no one named Ibori, the ex-convict who bought his way and the conscience of the Supreme Court justices, with tainted money, have the last laugh that the indefatigable defender of the defenseless has gone to the great beyond. Let no one named Ibrahim Babangida, the one Ligali Ayorinde, the deceased former Lagos State Chief Judge gave the name, “Kabiyesi” – (meaning the “untouchable” in the trial of the case instituted by Gani against IBB for the assassination of his friend, Dele Giwa of the Newswatch) go to sleep and think his tommentor-in chief is gone. That is wishful thinking; many more like him shall rise again to take up the baton where the SAM left it. Indeed many have sprang up and turning the heat on those gluttons. (For those who are not aware, go to the internet and read about the wonderful feat of Sahara Reporters). Let me paraphrase Sonny Okosun, Gani will rise again! He fought for freedom for his people! Nigerians will never, never, never surrender to the cabals and agents of maladministration! Adieu! Ganiyu Oyesola Fawehinmi. The sun might have set on your earthly sojourn today, but the seed of the goods that you planted by your actions will germinate to bring forth the fruits of social justice and human rights for Nigerians to eat from. Those whose lives you have touched in many ways will forever remember you. May Almighty Allah grant you paradise "firdaos" - of the highest rank, and may He grant your family the fortitude and courage to bear your loss (Amen). N.B. LASG please step up to the plate and give our SAM, the most befitting burial which he deserves. He lives his entire live in Lagos State and contributed immensely to the development of the State.

That was Gani. Nigeria will miss him; the legal profession will sorely miss him and so will the entire world. May his gentle, loving and caring soul rest well in the bosom of the Lord. Amen.

Ganiyu Oyesola Fawehinmi, irrepressible friend of the subjected, rejected, dejected, suppressed, repressed, oppressed and dehumanized underclass everywhere in the world is gone. Born in 1938 into doubtless aristocracy (his father was a successful timber merchant), he shunned and fought privileges with an unparalleled zeal. In spite of his considerable wealth derived from his brilliant and painstaking professional practice, Gani’s real friends were the dispossessed of the earth, the physically challenged, indeed the proletariat of the world. His advocacy for the underprivileged was not restricted to the courtroom where in his inimitable fiery advocacy he won for them notable and significant victories. He advocated for the poor at the barricades- once, in a rare and yet unexampled display of sacrificial commitment to principles, he lay on the road daring the armoured tank of the military to crush him at Yaba during a protest against one of the military governments; he fought for them in the mass media; he defended their cause in all the organizations he has been privileged to be a member or to found. His struggles were complex and multi-dimensional. This was not surprising given the fact that the events that impelled him to become a social crusader and those which he helped shape are equally varied and complex. We do not require a prophet to know that long after Gani must have departed from this world his works and times would continually inspire scholarly and revolutionary writings. Understandably, he provoked extremes of passion in people depending on their perspectives or their positions in the economy. Whether Gani is seen as a gadfly, an irritant, conscience of the nation or a social crusader, even his most uncharitable critic would admit that he is a militant with a cause and a militant that is at once irresistible and unforgettable. In the practice of law his footprints are indelible. He democratized the practice of law by commencing in 1985 the publication of his authoritative Nigerian Weekly Law Reports. Hitherto, judgments of the superior courts, particularly those of the Supreme Court, were treated as an exclusive property of one or two influential lawyers. As litigant or as counsel, he fought and won many landmark cases thus helping to advance the country’s jurisprudence. Chief Ganiyu Oyesola Fawehinmi, the lion of Nigerian law, an indisputable colossus of humanism may be gone but his deeds and contributions to the struggle against oppression and for the emancipation of the masses are indelible. Gani lived, fought and died for the people. He was a fearless and tireless tormentor of those who imposed themselves as rulers on the hapless people of Nigeria. He was God’s gift to Nigeria. We must resist the temptation to mourn Gani. His was a fulfilled life richly and fully lived in accordance with his philosophy and love for the oppressed. His achievements in his chosen field are monumental, his impact as the conscience of the nation undeniable, his legacy for posterity unforgettable. He has left a void that will be difficult to fill in our collective struggle for a better country. Our hearts are with his wives and children, both biological and otherwise. Pretenders to power who dot our government houses must learn from Gani the virtues of selflessness, honesty and commitment to principles. For those of us in the broad pro-democracy movement necessity is laid upon us to carry on from where he stopped

When a great thinker makes his/her exist from this world the world around stops for a second, today is one day that the people of Nigeria and those with their interest at heart has stopped for a moment to Morn the passing of a great advocate to those whose voices are never heard, the more than one hundred and thirty (130) something million strong people who call Nigeria their Country has lost a gem, lets all stop and observe one moment of silence for the reposed soul of Gani Fewehinmi, Rest his soul oh Lord and let perperual light shine on him Amen

Gani was Nigeria's greatest lawyer. He was more than a lawyer. He was a social engineer. He used the instrument of law to bring about a new and a just nation. To him law was just a platform to stand and change the face of the nation. Gani contributed more to the development of Nigeria than many of the nation's presidents and heads of state put together. My regret is that he did not live to see the nation of his dream: The nation he loved so dearly and was ever ready to die for. The greatest honour we can do for the first and only Senior Advocate of the Masses of Nigeria is for those who believe in his ideals (I am one of them)is to bring about the Nigeria of his dream no matter what it will cost. Gani, we will sorely miss you. May God grant you eternal rest. Amen.

Gani - A great and principled man. Not a Saint...but he was consistent in his philosophy and he loved Nigeria more than he loved himself. But now..one of the last of the Great Nigerian Icons is gone, we are left with a lost, self centered and ill-educated Generation. The greats are gone - Gani, Tai, Zik, Awo, Fela, Beko, etc. We have a few true spokesmen left - Prof Soyinka and Nuhu Ribadu (albeit with their faults) are the only examples i can think of. The rest are just are a bunch of jokers who will sell their mothers for $100,000. Any of these so called Government critics will drop their pens and sell their souls if they got a call from Aso Rock offering them a "special adviser" role with all the "perks". Nigerians by and large are unprincipled and cheap - we sold our brothers during the slave trade, we sold our birth right during June 12, some have sold our souls to "cowboy" churches and pastors in private jets and bentleys. Where is the Gani of our generation who will speak up against injustice? How do we move forward when the powers that be have figured out the best way to weaken a nation is not to educate its people - "keep them uneducated and they will bow"(ASUU - where art thou?) the few 0.5% of the population that can afford to study abroad, come back with fake accents and an unbelievable level of self importance gained after schooling in Peckham and two years of stocking shelves at Tesco. They do not respect structure or the fragment of the Nigerian society..they say "you Nigerians..." with contempt and disdain and want to manage others before they can manage themselves. Thank you Gani, Fela, Tai et al - at least i was priviledged to have encountered you all in my lifetime. i feel pain in my heart for the next generation who's Hero's will be Criminal Bank CEOs and State Looting Governors. Sun Re Gani....Sun Re!!

Chief Gani Fawenhinmi, a defender of the downtrodden masses, revolutionary firebrand, conscience of the nation, fire eating lawyer, champion of human right , thorn in the flesh of dictator, legal icon. Gani life was a shining example to many Nigerians; his Ideas, Policies and philosophy gave life to many dying and lugubrious souls including the writer in terms of education, activism and knowledge. The spirit of Chief Gani will keep haunting the nation till they change their ways “Gani” as the late sage and folk hero was and is still fondly called was Unique in several ways. Gani was a special breed in the annals of Nigeria’s history .He was highly determined and vigorous. He was a human dynamo, a colossus , a titan, scholar,Human rights activist, debater etc . He had a lot of friends and enemies because of his political cum economic theory. He never entertained any form of mediocrity. During his sojourned on the 3rd planet earth, he refused to have anything to do with indifferentism, apathy and anti-intellectualism. He belongs to the high intellectually class people. In Nigeria political spectrum, Gani bestirred the entire milieu like an octopus. Indeed Gani was in his element when spoken about democracy, its institution and democratic processes. Surely, Gani is like human right, you can look critically at his whole life from many perspectives and various angles, including political, social, economic or business, spiritual or metaphysical as well as intellectual or academic, legal, moral, ethical e.t.c. Gani was self made, He prized education, knowledge, scholarship and excellence above materialism and hedonism. Furthermore, fighting for truth, justice, equity and egalitarianism is a basic part Gani natural chemistry and personality. Truly, Gani was a revolutionary firebrand, a fire eating advocate of truth. A man who believed in standing for what is right even if standing alone His responsibility to the state, his philosophy of life, his patriotism or nationalism, activism ,his duty as a family men and his profession as a lawyer and calling as a political activist, yes his duty to Allah and humanity and above all, everything about his corporate life, his vision about the black race in particular and homosapiens in general were all underlined by his ardent belief in Almighty Allah. Gani when he was named the Attorney General in military era, he rejected the offer. In 2008 Mr Gani Fawehinmi rejected one of the highest National honours that can be bestowed on a citizen by the Nigeria government—Order of the Federal Republic(OFR)—in protest of the many years of misrule since Nigeria’s independence. He was founder of differnt NGO that organised revolution that led to the termination of military dictatorship in nigeria. He founded the National conscience party and resigned the presidency of the party voluntarily. Since his exit from the party, the party has refused to move forward. Gani will be sad now with the way Obayuwana led Ncp. Gani focused on the plebeians, Above all, he inspires trust. At time, when the search for true democracy is being threatened with extermination by military junta when the quest for messiah has become highly relevant, Gani made contribution stupendously. It is so unfortunate that The kleptocratic bourgeoisie, kleptomaniac, political vampires, economic saboteurs and flesh-eating-vultures did not allow Gani to be the landlord of presidential villa when he contested election in 2003 How I wish the sting of death can be pacify and mollify I would have taken an adventure into negotiating with the power of death for Gani to come back to life and criticise Oshiomhole for fumbling . That is why I am praying that God should raise somebody like chief Gani fawenhinmi to rule and elevate us from the generational oblivion, political quagmire, successive self centred leaders have consigned us to. Fawenhinmism is a philosophy and ideology which believes in the need to raise the consciousness of the masses, the need for enlightenment, and the need for social change which would give rise to progress. He stood for egalitarianism, social justice, and situation whereby the nation resources belong to all and sundry equally and should be used for the welfare of the people not to enrich the few powerful class. farewell Comrade Gani, may your gentle soul rest in peace. Gani did his best for ordinary people on the street than for his immediate family. People like him and the late Chief M.K.O.Abiola only passes through the world once in a thousand years. The best befitting honor for most heroes such as him is to celebrate his live and not to mourn. I pray for the repose of his gentle soul and also console the family he left behind. ADIEU GANI THE PEOPLES LAWYER AND SENIOR ADVOCATE OF HIS PEOPLE.

Quite arguably the greatest Nigerian that ever lived. In trying to fashion out the true meaning of Nigeria, he sacrificed time and time again for the masses and against the oppressors preventing Nigeria from attaining her true glory. In the madness of Nigeria, Gani was my hero. He was the one person we could depend on for clarity, consistency and hope that the Nigeria of our dreams could indeed be attained. Yes, Gani was our living embodiment that just maybe, maybe we could make it work. He breathed, fought, employed all his legal talents and ability and was imprisoned repeatedly just so Nigeria could bear some semblance to her promise in reality. Gani was an iroko tree standing strong and steadfast in the whirl of insanity that envelops the Nigerian nation space. May God grant him Aljana and welcome him for all he had done on earth. Afterall, it is obvious that he was one of Allah's special soldiers in the fight for what was right and he waged the battle proudly, defiantly and bravely. Though he is no more with us, let his family take solace in knowing that he fulfilled his mission on earth and they should smile and celebrate the legacy of this firebrand for justice, equity and fairness in our fatherland. Inna lillahi, wa inn illahi rajiun.

On Saturday morning, I saw a post by my good friend; Lawyer, Poet, and Politician Abdul Mahmud about the death of Gani Fawehinmi. I wandered through Facebook to see if anyone had posted something on it. There was no other post. I Googled 'Gani Fawehinmi dead' and all the references that came up were from the great man's rumoured death back in 2006. OK, I reckoned that even if nobody else had anything on it, NEXT would, given the ferocity of the champions of the paper, and well, strangely NEXT had not even a word on it. I was about to call Mahmud to ask him why he was spreading such a rumour when I saw Ikhide Ikheloa's post on Fawehinmi. Then I said to my wife, e be like say de man don quench true true. OK, as you can imagine, plenty things by now don begin dey waka for my head. In life I never personally met or interacted with Gani. I was not one of the writers who were thorns in the flesh of the Nigerian government that Gani fought for. But I am one of those who carry a Nigerian passport that Gani Fawehinmi spent his life fighting for. I believe I would not be wrong to say today that if there are some basic liberties that have become tangible in Nigeria, Fawehinmi had a hand in wrestling it from the fangs of Nigeria's leaders. In a somewhat trespassing way, I feel pained that while I lived in Nigeria my life did not find expression in sufficient contrariness to position me in a path of war with various disgraceful elements Nigeria has had as leaders. Perhaps, if I had, my path and Fawehinmi's paths might have crossed. It is a strange feeling I have when I read all the tributes being poured out for Chief Fawehinmi. The strange feeling is that I somehow think that all of us who have never pointedly challenged the evils and tyrannies of our country's leaderships have not only betrayed ourselves, but have left people like Fawehinmi out in the storm without appropriate protection. I feel that those of us who do not at one point, even at the risk of making propaganda of our own existences, do something, think something aloud, or say something firm against the evils at the helm of our country's leadership, we do more damage to the country than those so-called leaders. Chief Gani Fawehinmi has played his part in the great Nigerian drama and he has played it very well. Let us solemnly sing; our water pot is broken, it is broken. Our water pot is broken, it is broken. The big oil bean tree has fallen, but the seeds are already scattered in our land. He who must eat the seeds, let him become a tree. The seeds are many. Good night Chief Fawehinmi. The war is over for you. It is time you had some fun. God bless you. NNOROM AZUONYE

Gani is a radical to the core. It would interest us to know that Gani is a practicing Moslem. Yet at death, Gani found no qualms in flouting, so to say, the Islamic injunction that the corpse of a Moslem must be buried within 24 hours of demise. Gani said, it was environmental factors, in then Middle East of Mohammed's(peace be unto his soul) days that made it reasonable for people to bury their dead within 24 hours on account of the fact that the weather was radically hot and would readily result in the decomposition of the dead. Times have changed, however, GANI INSISTS. If many thought and acted like Gani, the world will be a bettter place, free of fundamentalism and fundamentalists. In fact someone had said that the problem of the Middle East is not Judaism or Islam but fundamentalism. The world has lost a Nobel Peace Prze Winner it never had. In any case, I see GANI picking that award posthumously.
