Marlon Jackson visits Nigeria

Michael Jackson's older brother Marlon was in Lagos, Nigeria, on Wednesday, July 22 and had an interactive session with journalists at the press centre of the International Airport. He was received by former Performing Musicians Association of Nigeria (PMAN) presidents, Tee Mac Omatshola and Bolaji Rosiji.

The event began with a short musical performance by Debina Abraham, a Michael Jackson impersonator and up-and-coming artiste who performed a song he had specially composed for the late pop icon.

Jackson, who was visibly still mourning, dressed in a yellow track suit and black shades, briefly expressed gratitude for the kind words and condolences shown his family. While speaking on the Badagry Historical Project, which he was working on, he revealed that his late brother had a special interest in it.

"Michael was interested in the Badagry project because he had never been to Nigeria and looked forward to the completion of the project because he wanted to come and see things for himself".

He also added that it was imperative that the historical artefacts such as those in Badagry be preserved, so that the generation yet unborn will get an opportunity to appreciate the sufferings of our forefathers who were part of the Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade.

The Niger-Delta issue also came to the fore at the event and Jackson said he looked forward to a peaceful resolution of the crisis and was willing to meet with the Nigerian government and representatives of the Niger Delta militants, in order to reach an amicable understanding between both parties.

Tee Mac also intimated journalists of plans to stage a major charity concert which will be held on Michael Jackson's birthday, August 29.

"It is going to be one of a kind African affair; a gathering of major African and Nigerian artists. It is basically to celebrate the life and achievements of one of the world's greatest entertainers. Proceeds form the event will be channelled to major charities around the world as advised by Marlon."

Tee Mac also added that the celebration will be an annual event.

When asked if his late brother had converted to Islam before his death during the Q&A session, Marlon said he wasn't aware of that as all he knew was that his brother was a Christian until he died. He also hinted that the Jackson 5 had considered touring together once more before Michael's untimely death. He said that what was primary to the Jackson family was to provide a secure future for his late brother's children.

On circumstances surrounding Michael's death, he said the family was not going to comment on that since the case was still being investigated.

The lingering PMAN crisis seems to be far from over as not only was the body absent at the event but all attempts by this reporter to get either Bolaji Rosiji or Tee Mac's comment on why the body was not present at the gathering proved abortive.

Rosiji however said, "these are the kind of things PMAN should be doing but they are not here. When I was the PMAN president I used to organized a legends night, where we celebrated some of our late music icons like sunny okosuns and Oliver de Coque."

Marlon left after about 20 minutes saying he had another appointment to catch up with. However Tee Mac hinted that Marlon will brief the press one more time before he leaves Nigeria.

What is wrong with all of you? This man is in Nigeria to build an ethically and morally questionable resort that will probably rob the people of Badagry of their land and their livelihood just for his own selfish interests and all you can do is leave sympathising messages about his brother? Nigerians get on my damn nerves. You appreciate his visit? Have you asked yourself where they are going to get the land to build this resort in Badagry? Has it occurred to you that fishermen and other people that have lived in Badagry for thousands of years through the generations will LOSE THEIR LAND?? And there will be no compensation for them. They will be swept under the carpet and driven away because they are poor. Yet all you can do is sycophantically pay lip service to Marlon Jackson just because he's a Jackson. THIS is PRECISELY why Nigeria has half the problems it does: Nigerians that cannot open their eyes and see the big picture. Nigerians that are too dazzled by shiny images to think about the far reaching consequences of the things they welcome. It's disgusting is what it is.

Sugabelly na wao! MJ remains the greatest. But I am sure it was Marlon WHO approved the land by himself. And Marlon is the one running things in the Delta. if you know how to keep ur honey uncovered don't fret when all sorts of insects fall in. Marlon could couldn't even make money from his own music. If LEBANESE MAKE MONEY without sweating why not Marlon? No one said a thing when Ogoni was bought for $15 Million.

Posted by Baba Kano on Jul 26 2009

Big mouth Sugabelly. You don't know what you were talking about Marlon. What did you do over the land your leaders have been taking from the people over the years to build their personal empires.Marlon on the other hand, is planning to build something that will bring in tourists and money to the people of Badagry and Lagos state.

Posted by pasquille on Jul 26 2009

Sugabelly, some day, if you haven't already, you will go to ikorodu or some other outlying area of Lagos to buy land on which to build your house. On that day, you will very conveniently forget that you're pursuing a very selfish project which in the end will rob some poor man of his land. I don't know that Marlon Jackson is packing some rod, the sight of which leaves the Badagry people with no choice than to give up their precious land. Do you see the big picture?

Posted by Waare Agbede on Jul 26 2009

I once read an interview an editor had with Mr. Jackson ina popular tabloid and I was so dissapointed that such an experienced journalist will have such an opportunity and focus just on the mundane. What that Badagy project was all about was not thoroughly discussed in the interview. It was more about celebration of the man and his family. You all may not like Sugabelly's comment, maybe we have issues with the way he puts his concern across, but have we asked the critical questions about this project?

Posted by tictac on Jul 26 2009

sugabelly, you are disgruntled and confused nigerian, if i am right these guys are bringing investement to creaet an economic activity to raise the income of some in badagry.. Land like money is worth nothing without maximising it full economical potential and that is what marlon came to do

Posted by pasquille on Jul 26 2009

Waare, perhaps you could lead the way with some of the critical questions about the project. While you're at it, we wouldn't mind some answers too.

Posted by Sugabelly on Jul 26 2009

@tictac: How am I disgruntled? I don't live in Badagry and Marlon Jackson's resort will never affect me or my life. Think before you spout nonsense about people you don't know. Second, how many of those fishermen in Badagry will be employed by this resort? The answer is probably zero. All of the jobs will be outsourced, if not from outside Nigeria, then definitely from outside Badagry so your assumption that it will raise incomes in Badagry is probably wrong too. Third, land is worth everything to those that live on the land. It is not your business what the people of Badagry do with their land. If they don't want to do anything with their land it is still not your business. For you to justify this project when you KNOW that these people will lose their land without compensation just because the project is big and shiny is wrong. As for you Pasquille, even if I bought land in Lagos to build a house, I would make sure I am paying the OWNERS of the land. All of you are just being dazzled because it is one of the Jacksons. It is bad enough that Nigerian leaders do this, and if you think that I have not criticised them when they have then you don't know anything about me. It is not Marlon Jackson's business what the people of Badagry are doing or not doing with their land. He simply came to capitalise on Nigeria end of story. At the end of the day this resort is going to be making money for HIM and HIS FAMILY. Very little of that money will be pumped back into Nigeria's economy. In fact, very little of that money will be pumped back into the direct community of Badagry so how exactly is this supposed to help them??? Stop oohing and aahing over Marlon Jackson and look at the reality of the situation.

Tee Mac mentioned at the press conference that Marlon would visit The Synagogue Church Of All Nations on Sunday to see T.B. Joshua. Will he ask TBJ about the prophecy about his brother? I think he’s going there to beg God for forgiveness. TBJ gave the family a warning that Michael would die, and that they should bring him to the church for healing, but Marlon refused to bring him. Now is his time for penitence.

Posted by Abebi on Jul 27 2009

Really, about TBJ and MJ? Where, when, How?

Posted by lilian on Jul 27 2009

hello All, i've read all ur comments bt i'm really interest in this TBJ prophesy. @ Peter Nyasa, pls tell me more abt this prophesy. Did TBJ really prophesy it?

GOD WILL HELP ALL OF US DONT FORGET MICHAEL IS DEAD BUT NOT GONE HIS LEGACIES ARE HERE TO SPEAK FOR HIM ENJOY YOUR TRIP IN NIGERIA

Sugabigbelly. I will sum it up in oner word "progress" You rather see nigeria develop to its fullest potential. Its sorely lacking so much, so when somebody wants to invest and bring a variety of people to the country, the best argument u have is fisherman will not make money. How much do you think fishermen make now? How much do u think that same fisherman can make work working at a resort making millions of dollars. Cost benefit analysis. U argument is as outdated as the light situation in Lagos

sugabelly or whatever you call your name. i will love to tell you this that nobody is an island. so marlon is not exceptional. when jesus christ was born, some were happy and some were not, when he was preaching the word of God, sun listen while some criticise, so bro there is nothing one will do that the world will not complain. if u tell me everybody loves you that means u are not proper. so marlon keep up ur work

Sugabelly, I have been to the Badagry slave Port and i don't think you have been, so don't get a twist in your knickers about what you don't know. The place already exists, and is supposed to be a Tourist site, but like everything in Nigeria, it is comatose, without life and doesn't yield up to 30,000 Naira monthly what a shame. A few fishermen float pass from time to time, but it's not a fishing village. Most of the houses there built during the Slave era are not habitable because of lack of maintenance, (it actually has the first story building ever to be built in Nigeria, which was habited by the slave Masters and also served as a holding house for our kidnapped ancestors, until they are taken across the road (chained together)down the alley of NO RETURN and into the waiting Ship. What Marlon and his group are trying to do is pump money into this area, bringing it back to life and turning it into a Slavery Theme Park and international Tourist destination. It will have Hotels, Condominium, Golf Course, a slave ship etc. Most of the land they might need, will probably be taken from across the ocean, which is basically jungle. When this is done, Nigeria will knock Ghana and Senegal off this particular market, all thanks to Marlon. I salute his bravery. This is going to be one hell of a not so easy project. It takes someone as grounded as him to carry it off. And lastly, adding the Jackson5 museum to the whole thing was an after thought.

I have always wanted to travel to Africa. With this new, historical resort, I have a place to visit and get the facts I seek about slavery history. Being Jewish, I understand the importance of always remembering the Holocaust and THIS is equally important for future generations to know. The fact local people will be employed at the resort is even more impressive and inspiring. Kudos to Marlon for stepping in and keeping this on track. I look forward to staying at this resort once it is complete.

Dear Sugabelly, God bless you! It seems to me you are looking at the bigger picture and being insightful regarding the Badagry project. You know there are always pros and cons with this type of situation. For me it's great that Black people are interested and doing it but I would suggest you write to Marlon Jackson outlining your concerns who knows it could even make a difference. It's okay to be emotional too, remember no matter what, the Jacksons are our brothers and sisters. As for me I love Michael Jackson now and forever. Never forget he was a black man a phenomenal and amazing one -forget about skin bleaching and stuff.Thats what they want you to focus on. Lets stop tearing each other down and give more constructive advice.....
