Spend more on education or strike continues, ASUU tells FG

University lecturers have again called on the Federal Government to honour the agreement it reached with them. The call was made at a rally organised by the University of Lagos chapter of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), at the main gate of the institution on Wednesday.

The Union insists the indefinite strike will continue until the government decides to sign and implement the agreement on funding education in the country.

Spend more on Education

The lecturers displaying placards said they rejected the 40 percent salary increment recently announced by the Federal Government.

According to them, the purpose of the rally was to inform the public that the Union's demands went beyond remuneration, and that the agreement included an increase in the funding of education and university autonomy. Samuel Jegede, a lecturer at the Department of Philosophy asked: "Will 40 percent increment to my own salary bring electricity and facility to the classrooms?"

He said that the classroom where he graduated 14 years ago with 34 other students is where he lectures about 500 students now.

Ayo Olowe, the chairman of ASUU, University of Lagos chapter, while speaking with journalists said, the fund allocated to education is too small for the country to make meaningful progress in the sector.

"In a situation whereby they (FG) are spending less than two percent of the national budget on education, as opposed to UNESCO's standard of 26 percent; the government is just not serious," said Mr. Olowe.

The Union chairman also condemned the Minister of Education, Sam Egwu, saying he had been insensitive to the issues currently surrounding education in the country.

He said: "While Nigerian universities are in crisis, the man (Sam Egwu) is spending so much money, lavishly on birthday parties. It makes him highly irresponsible as the Minister of Education."

On Industrial Arbitration Panel

On the directive by the Industrial Arbitration Panel that the Union should call off the ongoing strike after the dispute was taken to the panel by the Ministry of Labour and Productivity, Mr. Olowe said the Union would disregard the directive.

"They (IAP) did not follow due process," he said. "We are in a democratic society. If somebody brings a case to you, you should hear from all parties. They did not; rather they just asked us to go back to work."

In his parting words, Mr. Olowe said, "Unless the government is ready to sign the agreement, the struggle continues."

A student's view

Ibukun Salami, a 200 level Systems Engineering student of the institution blames the Federal Government for the crisis.

She said: "Government should just listen to these people (lecturers) and answer them. What ASUU is saying is true; a lot of things have to be improved on in our universities. In my faculty, we need a lot of equipment and computers."

I dnt knw why d both parties are adamant over reaching a truce. Govt shud negotiate with asuu,as consideration by d latter will be appriopriate. But assu,y do u keep absenting frm crucial meetings that will benefit nigerian students. Are u fighting 4 ur pockets or 4 d nation's education. Pls,call off d strike,we are already commiting atrocities. Militancy will increase in a geometric progression. Hop u dnt mind?

Posted by lukmission on Jul 23 2009

who minds, let them continue the strike, let the government do what they know best and the lecturers do what they know best. We shall see where this ends.

Both the association(ASUU) and d FG are 2 b faulted...why must les than 3% of the national budget be spent on education if we are to measure up wit the ever progressing world. Also if funds are being released what's d probability of infrastructural develpmnt taking place where every body seems 2 b after their own... i hope d best coms out of this so upcoming generations of Nigerian students would benefit from it

Its a pity for FG,that unless her workers go on stike thier demands will not be met.Just sign the DUC.

Posted by Galaxy on Jul 23 2009

I don't know where to start. Is it that ASUU's demand are not legitimate or going on strike justifies the means but all these lies on FG because it is his call to make and this will show how serious he takes our education.

Posted by 2011 on Jul 23 2009

What ASUU is asking for is peanuts compared to the emoluments paid to our Executive and Legislature. I think their demands resound the heart cry of all Nigerians for a responsive responsible Government.

Posted by Marvell FG. VS ASUU on Jul 23 2009

I don't blame dem (ASUU) They're fighting 4 their right. But hw're we sure dat if wat they want is been granted dat dey will truly fix up facilities in d sch. Or share d money witg d salary. Look at the minister of education 4 example. At the midle of dis he is busying celebrating he's birth right. He will use d money to do he's death day if u give him d chance. There are systems dat d govt. does not partain in some sch. act like UNIBEN part time prog, wat do dey use the pay 4 part time 4. Not only UNIBEN other UNIVERSITIES does too. Well the F.G shud try & comply so the leader's of 2moro can resume sch. Plz F.G. But ASUU beter do call off d strike. And i urge d F.G to make a wise decision. So dat ASUU'll not come 4 more 2morow.

I weep for this country. We have an imbecilic Government who is hell bent in producing an ignoramus population. Read the above reactions from these under graduates? Some are taking refugee under modern text lingo because they cannot spell. As for ASUU, every right thinking Nigerian is in agreement with your cause. Don't listen to the stupid song of students will suffer beat. What ASUU is asking the irresponsible Government of Yar'Adua, a former ASUU member, to do will end the unbaked graduates we are currently churning out. Also, compile a detailed list of their children and wards studying overseas and the cost to tax payers and present it to the public. We have seen that the Federal Government is lawless and incapable of honouring agreements or else ASUU will not be on strike over funding if the "rule of Law" Government of Yar'Adua would simply comply with the UNESCO bit on Nations Education funding. Be steadfast, if they adopt no work no pay, the intelligentsia is not short of strategies for survival.

Posted by Kolawole Habeeb Adewale( O.A.U) on Jul 23 2009

I think the insensitivity issue from the FG is as aresult of the fact that none of their siblings is studying in any of the federal & state institution in the country. As a result they feel unconcerned. I am just dissappointed at the present regime's insensitivity to the country's education moreso that we have a former lecturer as a president. AS for the minister of education; cAN SOMEBODY PLEASE find out if any of his wards is presently in any nigerian institution. So they are not bothered. What we need is atotal revolution like what j.k Rawlins did with Ghana. That is only when we can operate true democracy. Poor Standard of education is what obtains in most Nigerian university as aresult of poor funding

Posted by Chinelo on Jul 23 2009

It's a pity. Our leaders are nt serious at all. They think this is child's play. Imagine all d universities in nig. on strike! I don't even understand our president at all. He's 2 quiet 4 my liking. Until Children of these politicians are withdrawn from their various schools abroad, the strike will still have children of the poor suffering it.They are at home now, some in the farm,sea,market,e.t.c.doing one activity or the other while children of these politicians are in Ghana,South Africa,US,UK,you name them, learning.

Posted by Inspirator on Jul 23 2009

What baffles me is that our government seem ignorant of what kind of future they are creating. Well, even if they get all their children to study abroad and become insensitive to the plights of the citizens they are leading. One day, the criminals they have raised as a people will become the ones that will destroy their children and assets. Both ASUU and FG need to know what is wrong with them.

The whole game is just being funny, because both parties(ASSU and the FG) have their own flaws. The FG has the money to settle the trash but they are refusing to do that, and at the same time the ASSU body is more concerned about its belly, using the student's academic welfare as a carmouflag

it is absolutely unforunate that our educational system is in shambles.FG is paying lip service to the plight of ASUU because right from time the funding of education has always been a mirage. When they have their wards scattered all-over europe and america. What I know and believe is that what goes around comes around. So if those in power like let them send their kids to school in heaven someday they will pay for the sins of their fathers.Believe me.I pity these poor students May God Help us.

Clearly the public educational system in Nigeria is dysfunctional. The most qualified teachers have left for greener pastures and we are left with the unqualified. This in turn will give rise to half baked students. Most of whom cannot even construct a simple sentence. See the samples below from the comments above. How shocking! Are these the people who will run Nigeria tomorrow? We ain't seen nothing yet. "We student ar sick and tired of d whole drama 4m FG..They shud be atleast be reasonable for once and get d agreement signed." "pls we need 'em to call off the srike,so exams will kickoff." I'm with you on this one. I am very afraid for the future of Nigeria if this is how some students construct their sentences. I know it's all under the guise of short hand but...Jeez. Have we heard what happened at the current NYSC camp - that some corps members could not fill simple forms, that Camp officials were not sure they were genuine graduates, so they contact their claimed institutions which confirmed their graduate status. See why er have the type of legislature in place today as lot of their members are product of cash/body and carry certificate holders. Two sides of the problems. One govt insincerity in funding the most important sector of the economy. Alarming to note that less than 2% of budget is devoted to this sector as opposed to international standard of 26%. Environment has a lot of impact on people. The other side of the problem rests with the lecturers who award high marks to students who do not even write exams on the basis of higher bidder. This set of wicked people should be purged from the systems so that when the govt adequately fund education, sanity of studies should ensure products compare with the best in the world as Nigeria is known for.

ASUU should know that they must carry this struggle to the end... We don't want introducing sentiments as they did in calling off the last strike after the transition to the present administration. What good is in an educational system that cannot equip its products to solve their own problems talkless of that of others and the society. IT IS TIME FOR CHANGE!!!

Labalaba, thanks for your post. I don’t really know the background to the current ASUU v Government impasse but my heart bleeds for Nigeria. Reading through the posts, I am shocked at the level of poor grammar from our undergraduates. If it wasn’t so sad, I would have been in stitches laughing my head off but I can’t because it’s a sad reflection of the state of affairs in Nigeria. I have lived in the UK for about a decade and schooled in England but I had a significant part of my education in Nigeria and I love Nigeria for giving me the good base to flourish as a man and as a professional. What is really happening to my beloved country? In the last few months I have taken a keen interest in Nigeria and I am truly saddened reading these posts. What is the way forward my country men? I see my Indian and Chinese friends walk tall but we don’t seem to have got it right as a people. ASUU and the Government should put the interest of the Nigerian students first. The problem is that I don’t even believe the strike is in the best interest of Nigerian students. Surely there are better ways of resolving issues – even in Nigeria. ASUU cannot expect independence when the government funds education. Life doesn’t work like that. In view of the global economic downturn and the consequent fall in government revenue, ASUU should be more flexible in their demands and the Government should engage more with the lecturers. What is the national assembly doing? I saw the facebook clip on their salaries and it made me almost loose fate in politicians. No one cares!! My heart truly bleeds.

ASSU is looking for money. They aren't fighting a just course. What about Other sectors of the economy?.they're using Autonomy & funding as a front.ASSU should purge themselves first because their hands are not clean. You can't look for justice with soiled hands of injustice.purge yourselves of the vices in the universities like SORTING,VICTIMIZATION,EXTORTION,AWARDING ARBITRARY MARKS and the likes.then we cant talk of a GREAT NATION.

Posted by ShowD, Nashville,TN on Jul 24 2009

Would strike bring the needed result? In Nigeria, history has shown that strikes have never been able to achieve their goals; instead, they have only affected the people they claim to fight for. What the leadership fails to understand is that the solutions to most of Nigeria’s woes are in our Universities or education systems. They keep looking elsewhere and running after foreign experts who provide solutions that are only designed for foreign countries. Nigeria problems are local and thus need to be studied locally (i.e. Nigeria Universities). Our leaders should wake up and go back to their roots.

ASUU shoul consider that the extra was not paart of 2009 budget and they should relent And if i may ask do this lecturers deserve what they are asking for....the system is lame and our so called lecturers are not delivering as expected ASUU for the sake of God..you get pikin for school accept the 40% increase Note this ppl FG are not affected there kids are in overseas schools Pls SAVE OUR SOUL

First things first. I'm yet to be convinced that there is any sincerity of purpose. Or should I say the 'African mentality' thrives in this land of the rising sun. To me, the government's disposition is lacerating into the intellectual skin of this helpless country. Helpless? Yes! A country where thieving of high profile dominates; 'public servants' illicitly amass staggeringly fabulous wealth; no govt. parastal functions optimally( optimally? Maybe in our dreams); the subjectivity displayed by the leaders stay perennial. Even the sardines know in their cans, that Nigeria is rotting. I am studying Computer Engrg. here, but I tell you, there is a great gulf between what obtains here and even our sister African countries, let alone, the Western world. Pfft! An overhaul of this cruel dynasty may suffice. (My fingers ache now..) *Thumbs up Labalaba!*

When the truth is the Voice of the people is the voice of God,So by extension the action of the people is the action of God. So, my postulated is God will never punished our rulers, we the people are the one to come all out to punish them. By confrontations, Agitations, civil disobedience, insurgent, we should revolt to change the government any well possible. God will never do for us what will not do for ourselves. I fight for a better Nigeria. Let's us as people back our voices with actions.

In my own opinion, ASUU have run out of track in their own argument. I can see that Federal Govt on its own have tactically expose the trick ASUU have been using to deceive Nigerians and must partically undergraduestes by accepting all agreements that have direct bearing on the welfare of Nigerian University System and refusing to agree on what is the main "ASUU demand" SALARY INCREMENT. It is now very clear that ASUU want to be paid as Politicians before they can workhard. Unfortunately, Politicians will not allow that because they are afraid to lose power to the academians - let academians make ideas while politician make money and policies, that's the game. Unfortunately, neither the politicians or the acedemians feel the impact of the show, only we the students do. I think that is while all parties envolve are hapily playing the show. All I know is that every thing has end, my prayer is that God should bring an everlasting solution to this problem because both parties involve seem to agree on one thing, - NOT TO CALL OFF THE STRIKE. I so much expect this game to be won by ASUU but that is only and only if they PROMISE GOD that they will use the 109% salary increase to beter the university education system and not to use for their peronal interest as the whole public think.

The FG should be able to make the education sector more attractive to the foreigner in terms infractural facilities, Standard Equipment in each of the Department of Different Faculties and Schools, this can only be achieve by signing the agreed percentage the ASUU Union are asking. Ya'adua is not payiing attention to effects and backwardness of academic session in the country despite he was a lecturer at katsina university before contesting for public office such as the presidency. Now another blame goes to the Minister of Education Sam Egwu who has show no concern on the mantle which is on him, he love celerabtion upon celebrations. Infact this strike is affecting me as intending undergraduate who are to enter into one of the universities in the country this 2009/2010 academic session. They should sign the agreement as soon as possible. I will not be surprise in we return to military regime again because many Nigerians are extemely angry because of the insensitiveness of the Government towars its citizenry. What we have in Nigeria is rulers not leaders. We have rulers who gather and gather and gather for there generations. They forget the fact that we brought nothing into this world and IT IS 100% CERTAIN WE WILL GO WITH NOTHING. ONCE A MAN DIES THAT IS THE END. ALL those things you have gathered one day will become raw material for fire on the last day. In fact you are making your posterity lazy by trying to gather for them that is why you found that in Nigeria it is difficult to see the children of the leaders breaking new grounds their parents have made them lasy ny their ill gotten wealth. I am saying this with great anger in my mind because the Govt has left the citizens to continue in their hardship and penury but I know that God will fight for us and deliver us in Jesus Name.

Posted by iziegie mathew on Aug 14 2009

The problem in Nigeria is that our leaders are not elected but rgged in or selected, so they do not care what happens to our children in schools. As long as they have used our money to send their children abroad, allow them to marry and be married to foreigners to take care of their loots so will they not care to listen to ASUU. In a civilised country Sam Egwu would long have resigned. But he will not because even though he has been recycled many times he still has some birth day parties to celebrate. Considering the present state of disorganization and unrest in this country ASUU should be treated no more than a criminal organization. for God's sake, has ASUU as a body ever taken steps as a means to stop their members involved in all manners of unmentionable vices. ASUU brought about the decay in the system we talk about. you will be suprised if you hear how much is in circulation in these ubiversities... it is small, but what have you done with it. ASUU is not getting one drop of my sympathy. service, law school, graduation, med school, exams, post-jamb have all been put on hold by one selfish body of old men that want to retire at age seventy. I dey vex, Nigerian students open your eyes, the problem we are having with the government is same we are having with ASUU...OLD PEOPLE, OLD PEOPLE AND OLD PEOPLE. GET OUT!!!!!

Since we can't do anything by struggling, we plead with our leaders in the name of God that owns their life to do something about this strike. We are the future leaders, if we don't get education now that we are young, who will lead us tommorrow? They should remember that no one knows tomorrow except they want to die on those sits they are sitting on. Secondly, Lecturers should try and do something on their own because all the bribes they take every year from first year student is enough for them. I hope lecturers will stop takig bribe after their salaries have been increase. MAY GOD HELP BOTH OUR LEADER AND OUR LECTURERS.

ASSU shuld find some other ways and methods to convince the public to shift pressure on FG. like the purported publication. they shuld do more, creat more awereness and make the burden and the blame of this strike on FG. and they shuld ensure that all the universities must of necessity stands thier ground without yielding to any lobby from the FG.

for the fact that the strike is still on till now, is sufficient evidence that this administration dont really have any concrete plan for educational sector. what is the essence of the 7POINT AGENDA if education is not given adequatetly funded. our leaders seems to been bankrupt of visions and innovative ideals.

One thing that i can still figure out, is the fact that our surposedly leaders are not realy buther of the fact that the future of nigerian are been jopardised by the ongoing labour action. even if it is inconvinence for FG to grant ASUU demands, why dont they make sacrifice for the benefits of the nigeria students. they shuld know that with their present decision they are inevitably creating a future enemies for thier children who are schooling overseas. they will eventually come back to face the same weakning system left behind by thier fathers.

i sincerly think we should stop begging FG,dey're just a bunch of idiots and dey wont listen, know y???deir kids dont come to our schools.....or is yaradua's son or daughter or even granchild(if hez got any) in ur school??? think we should just be begging asuu to consider dat our lives are on hold(they've pressed d "pause" button) cause of d action.....its becomin sickening.think we can make do with wat we have........we're can endure till it all collapses.maybe then it will be visible enuf for dose stupid people dat call demselves govt to see it.

ASUU i know that you r fighting a good cause, and i support ur action to d fullest.Bt please, call off the strike so i can go back to school.the year is runing out already.we r tired of stayin at home and most of us r becomin pains to our parents already. As for the FG,the bad eggs will all die the way Abacha died.cos dey dnt deserve anytn good for bn selfish, greedy n heartless.for puttin our educational life at stand still cos their children r abroad, they will regret y they sent thier children abroad.

Has anyone seen where the govt. is stingy? You can furnish an embassy with 35billion naira but not pay lecturers? Will you take tax payers money to the grave? From the peak of govt. to them base, it's all glaring that they are confused. This country has no leadership, we only have politicians and these politicians are aimless, no social responsibility. Felloe Nigerians do not be flabbergasted if a civil war should arise or the military should come and take over. I dare the FG to push the military and the police this far. You all at the top are cheating the lecturers give them what they want because they are not silly demands, a word is enough for a wise leader, do not look at the present rather take a glance at the future, you all will reap what you sow in one way another. I am a student, and i have given up, if i am fed i will seek other means.... Mr. President the world is watching, and the pages of the history books have not run out... the future of Nigerian youths are in your hands... Take advice

I wonder what is seven point agender when our education is not working. How can this country be rebranded when our universities are producing half baked graduate because of lack of facilities. Mr president please do something to end this strike action of ASUU.

Mr. President, "Gani's death is nation's great lost". Oh, you are right and I agree with you 100%. Currently, Nigerian universities are dying, is it really a concern to you? Even when the whole world is crying to your office for attention, you still maintain staunch negative. I suppose you were once a student, and more interestingly a varsity lecturer. Fund Nigerian education the masses say.

I have come to believe that our Government is a shadow of themselves. The best say to maintain stable peace in this country is to face the reality. Our rulers [Not leaders] are those that are very well educated and they know the truth but refuse to embrace it. The Bible says You shall know the truth and it shall sent you free but our own is you shall abandone the truth and leave Nigerias to wallow in penury and let ONLY few people enjoy the national Gold. Any time, I see the youth and all the vices going on in this country it grieves mny heart. We are not lazy neither are we fools in this country. God will help us.

Gani the voice for the voiceless has gone. The leg for the lame and the arm for those whose hands are shortened. If he was still alive and active I am sure he would have helped to settle this issue betweeen angry plus adamant ASSU and FG. He was a Man of the people. I LOve Nigeria and our Government but you see, I am not happy with what is going on. Nigeria Government has the money to change the situation not even only in Education. Now things are increasing in price and we have abandoned our main stay before Oil which is Agriculture. How long share we continue to depend on quick money? Our Government should help us and emancipate the people from penury and God will bless them in Jesus Name. The FG should be sincere and let them embark on agriculture and Education so that more jobs will be created. Remember that the Good that MEN do lives with and after them. If Gani were to be a BAD man no matter the money he has people will not praise him now that he has died porbably few could when he was alive because of what they can gain from him but it is because he lived a good live and he was sincere and honest to all. Everything is not money. It is always good to lay a good legacy and mark an indelible Mark in the footprint of Life so that when the person dies people will remember what he or she has done. it is what people says about you when you die that matters not have many houses, our cars or money that matters moreover heaven or hell is waiting for the person. I advice our good leaders to please in the name of God to DO GOOD PLEASE and God bless bless them. I will stop here for now. Learn from it.

The ASUU strike is getting more striker as events takes a newer dimension. the strike has become a game filled with suspense and high profile twisting politicking. with a life threatening cases. the goodnews is that the pressure is for once felt by the pridators themselves. this senario is only tipical of nigeria state. let us keep praying that nigeria students will be the head at the end of this whole academic strike---flu.......

the asuu chairman was seing leaving aso rock with an apparent broad smile on his face last week, and he made a promise which was understood that the on going asuu strike will be history in the next two days. we all rejioced and give cuddles to oshomole but its been almost a week now the strike still subsist. funny enough is that the noise has been shifted to the credibility of the leadership of asuu, we were told again to wait till friday for final verdict from asuu. now the answer is that asuu won but the question is unknow.
