Naked women stage protest in Ekiti

Print print Email email Share Share

The political scenario in Ekiti took a new twist this morning as elderly, naked women protested round the state capital, Ado-Ekiti.

They took to the streets, chanting in the local Ekiti dialect, demanding the release of results of the governorship re-run election. They wanted the governorship candidate of the Action Congress (AC), Kayode Fayemi, to be declared as winner of the polls.

The spiritual dimension of naked women in protest is seen as a warning to the federal government and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on the consequences of tampering with the wishes of the people as expressed during the poll.

Donning white wrappers, the elderly women, most of whom wore no shoes, said that their major demand was for Ayoka Adebayo, the resident electoral commissioner, to be allowed to conclude her job.

Ronke Okusanya, the leader of the women at the peaceful rally said that the rally was in support of Mrs. Adebayo. They called her a mother, who has demonstrated the resolve of Nigerian women to stand tall where men have fallen.

Jide Awe, the AC chairman in Ekiti State, lauded the women for being part of the process towards the deliverance of the people from the shackles of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Ekiti women are showing the stuff they are made of .This is a very good development If the men feet drag on political dynamism the women have come out boldly to affirm that the role of women in Nigerian politics is at the fore .

If I am to advise Mr Segun Oni, I would say he should just resigned to fate and allow Dr Kayode Fayemi to lead as the governor of Ekiti state. Imagine those women, some of them old enough to be his (Segun Oni) mother. They said they don't want him. If he should cunningly find his way back to the State house, he is already doomed; he can even run mad. Mr Segun Oni should respect the voices of the people.

For me, it's not a matter of running mad. The power of nakedness as a tool of resistance does not reside in the fact that it has any mystical powers. I don't think it does. Whether Oni goes mad, dies or does neither is not the point. But, that these women are willing to use their bodies to fight for a cause that they believe in, for communal survival and progress: that to me is why these women are powerful.

Iam looking at this issue from another dimension. I find it rather very, very painful the extent these politicians will go to just to achieve their ambition, either inordinate or not. It is very immoral of these people to have EXPLOITED these rather defenceless women in such a blatant manner. It would have made a lot more sense if we have had the incoming-governor's wife(i.e. Mrs Fayemi), the incoming deputy governor(Mrs Olayinka)on the same row with these badly manipulated grannies. As for Mrs Ronke Okusanya, the acclaimed women leader, she should be ashamed that she prefers to lead from the rear! As for the winner of the election, methinks the Ekitiguber drama 2009 is still on!

Any truth to the partakers received $20.00 each (2000.00 Naira) before the protest? Probably, it is not good to jump to conclusion...In Ondo State where LP just won the Guber. vedict, information reaching seems Govenor's men are going for the gold rather than govern and change the live of the people for better..people are already beginning to be uneasy with these wrong approach. chaoel@yahoo.com

It is true that the people of Ekiti knew whom they vote for,so they should rise up and figh for their righ.moreover,PDP did not have any useful programme, especially in Ekiti state.
