NEXT's Adaobi Tricia Nwaubani has won the Commonwealth Writers' Prize for Best First Book in the Africa Region.

The debut novelist won for her novel, ‘I Do Not Come To You By Chance'. The win was announced by the Commonwealth Foundation in South Africa earlier today. South African writer Marie Heese was also declared the Africa Regional winner in the Best Book category.

Nwaubani's winning book, ‘I Do Not Come To You By Chance' tells the story of a young man drawn into the clandestine world of Nigerian advance fee fraud, better known as ‘419'.

The author will now vie with winners in the other Commonwealth regions for the overall prize, to be announced in New Delhi, India, on April 12.

Congratulations are in order, of course. Now, let us go out, buy the novel, and actually read it. Reading is the best compliment we can pay a writer. We need not wait for this novel to be selected for a school examination before we read it. Having read the story when it first came out, this reader will like to urge others to go get it. The novel tells the story of our country in a very humorous manner.

This Next is fast becoming a nest of award winners. So Oga Dele tell us your secret. How did you manage to 'Stanley Macebuh' such a team. Well Stanley Macebuh is the new verb for spotting talents. I think he comes close to Uncle Sad Sam who I am told have the capacity to tell a talent from the womb!!!

Adaobi is my kinswoman - both at the literal and literary levels, just like Achebe, Chimamanda, Osondu, etc... I need not add though that many of their siblings, similarly-endowed, would die unknown and unsung in a land that slaughters her best to fatten her worst. But it is not yet sunset: the sunken sun hastens to rise again, defying the odds!

Posted by clems on Mar 12 2010

'Nwanne jisie ike. Nke a bu onyinye chukwu nyere Ndigbo, madu apüghi inapü anyi ya' I feard that our art was ageing and fading with the band led by Achebe, Soyinka, et-al; BUT you, Chimamanda, Akpan, Okri, Osondu, et-al keep promising me to live up to the promise. May I join you soon on that glorious podium. Congrats to everybody thatis constructively and productively NIgerian (not to vile characters that should have long been done away with) - YES!

This is pretty good, another Chimamanda Adichie, Flora Nwapa, etc. This should encourage Nigerian youths and make them realise that the hero lies in them and that they can achieve their positive dreams no matter the hellish Nigerian enviroment the Nigerian selfish politicians have created. Ride on lady and continue to inspire the Nigerian youths.

Well I'm happy for you. But you do realize that we get prizing for portraying ourselves as 'negative' not for works that reaffirm our pride as a people. It's a divide and rule tactic. By all means I congratulate you.

I'll reserve my judgement until I have read the book. I was among the people congratulating Uwam Akpan's book for winning the same award last year until I read it and a few other books on the shortlist and longlist and realise that that book did not deserve to win. So I'll hold my breath until I have read this book.
